a HIsToRY of InnoVaTIonThe Para-Ordnance Manufacturing Company was founded in 1985 in Toronto, Canada by two handgun enthusiasts and childhood friends, Ted Szabo and Thanos Polyzos. From its inception, the company focused on firearms innovation.

In 1988, PARA made the dream of many a 1911 aficionado a reality. It produced a high-capacity frame and magazine for Model 1911 pistols. This solved the classic handgunner’s dilemma: choosing between the superior stopping power of the .45 ACP cartridge and the impressive firepower of high capacity 9mm pistols.

The PARA frame was designed with built-in plunger tube and grip bushings, leaving no possibility of the loose or lost parts that plagued the old 1911 design. Frame wall thickness around the slide stop hole was made 20% greater for extra strength.

In 1990, PARA determined that the only way to assure the total quality, performance and reliability of a pistol based on their innovative frame was to manufacture the entire pistol themselves. For the first time in history, Model 1911 pistol owners no longer had to compromise and could enjoy a 1911 with both .45 stopping power and high capacity.

The 1911 uses a single-action trigger and, to be ready for action, the hammer has to be cocked. Many people are simply uncomfortable carrying a pistol “cocked and locked.” But double-action pistols have a heavy, accuracy-inhibiting trigger pull.

PARA solved the problem with the introduction of the first light double-action pistol in 1999. This remarkable

trigger system is now known simply as the LDA. Unlike the 14-pound pull found on many double-action pistols, the LDA has a 6-pound stroke. The LDA gives shooters the great ergonomics of the 1911 design with a hammer down carry and a sweet, smooth trigger.

Constant improvement in safety, performance and reliability are the norm at PARA. The most troubling weakness in Browning’s original 1911 design was the extractor. Not having 21st Century technology, he had done the best he could with his extractor design.

In 2004, using the latest CAD/CAM design computers, a new Power Extractor™ (PXT™) with an articulating claw that was twice the size was patented, taking reliability of the 1911 design into the 21st Century.

After the passing of Ted Szabo in 2007, co-founder Thanos Polyzos was committed to continuing to produce PARA’s innovative pistols as well as the new designs that were in development. To bring the new firearms to market, it was decided to move the company to the USA where more resources were available for production.

After an exhaustive search for a new home in the United States, the Charlotte, North Carolina area was

selected. PARA started the historic move to its new corporate headquarters in 2008, along with the change of its name to PARA USA, Inc. The move to the suburb of Pineville was completed a year later.

The 1911 Wild Bunch was designed for SASS competition and it is the most traditional 1911 pistol PARA has ever produced. Wild Bunch Action Shooting is a scenario based game. The time period is 1900-1916 and the location is the American West.

Working with the SASS “Wild Bunch” we took our popular GI Expert and gave it the retro treatment. The changes included a traditional spur hammer and grip safety along with a solid trigger shoe. The sights are three-white dot which are permitted in the SASS Wild Bunch Modern Division but can easily be blacked out if you prefer to shoot the Traditional Division.

While the Wild Bunch may have a retro look, it uses the best materials and is made with modern technology. The barrel is a premium stainless steel barrel with a 1-in-16 left hand twist and it is crowned at the muzzle. The barrel locks up in the slide with a solid bushing.

The slide is precision machined to fit the frame and is laser engraved with the SASS logo behind the traditional cocking serrations. The wood stocks are checkered with the traditional double-diamond pattern.

Every maker of 1911 style pistols claims theirs is the best, but only PARA uses Super Dynamic Technology™ (SDT™) to make its 1911 pistols. To put up or shut up about the technical superiority of PARA pistols, Champion Shooter Todd Jarrett was challenged by Shooting Gallery Host, Michael Bane, to the Ultimate Hot Gun Torture Test.

How fast could Jarrett put 1,000 rounds of .45 ACP through a factory stock PARA PXT 1911? Bane knows that heat is the number one enemy of regular guns and he wanted to see how much this one could take. For a warm up, 1,000 rounds of 230-grain ball ammunition were shot through a stock out-of-the-box PARA pistol.

The pistol was cleaned and, on the Blackwater USA range, Jarrett started pouring magazine after magazine of 155-grain frangible ammo with a muzzle velocity of 1,150 feet per second through the pistol.

With three people loading the magazines to keep up with Jarrett’s trigger finger, the pistol started to get hot. Shooting 93 rounds a minute, it was estimated that the pistol’s stainless steel barrel reached temperatures in excess of 550 degrees. 10 minutes and 44 seconds later, Jarrett had established a world record.

We do not recommend that you torture your 1911 for 4,000 rounds without cleaning it. But if your 1911 is a PARA, it can take it.

Accuracy: After shooting 5,000 rounds, including the grueling 1,000 round Hot Gun Torture Test, the out-of-the-box PARA PXT 1911 was able to deliver this 10-round group from a benchrest at 25 yards measuring 1.92 inches with the center 7 shots grouping 1.02 inches.

The superiority of PARA’s Super Dynamic Technology gave Jarrett an out-of-the-box 1911 that could establish a world record for how fast you can shoot 1,000 rounds of .45 ACP ammunition through a 1911 pistol. A total of 5,000 rounds were fired through the pistol, and there were ZERo malfunctions.

In 1988, PARA took the traditional 1911 to its next evolution with its revolutionary high capacity frame. This was to be just PARA’s first step in a long series of needed improvements to the 1911 design. When asked to make them, we consulted the best gun handler we know, Todd Jarrett. As an instructor he has a unique insight into what the tactical operator needs. Many missions are fought in poor light. We re-engineered the front of the frame so you could hang the biggest, baddest flamethrower you could find off it.

The front straps of the frames are checkered. Whether you are wearing gloves or bare-knuckled, you can hang onto the guns even if you are crawling though muck. You

do not want to think about a mag change when under fire. The Tacticals have humongous mag wells on them.

These Unlimited pistols are carefully built by a select team of gunsmiths in limited quantities. Jarrett recommended using a variety of parts that are normally only found in one-of-a-kind custom pistols.

Designed to be working guns not fancy dress pieces, bonded over the stainless steel frame and slide is our new, non-reflective black PK2 finish. If you need a tough gun for a tough job, the PARA Tactical models were made for you.

14•45 TACTICALOur state-of-the-art P14•45 frame was re-engineered with a massive light rail. The front strap of the frame is checkered 25 lpi so you can hang onto the pistol whether you are sweating in the jungles along the Equator or freezing in the Arctic. It has all the good stuff from Ed Brown including his National Match bushing, slide stop and checkered mainspring housing. We wanted a magwell that made JAWS look like a guppy gasping for air so we put a Dawson Precision on it. For a trigger that will delight the most demanding operator we used Cylinder and Slides Stainless Tactical II hammer, sear and disconnector. It comes with five 14-round high-capacity magazines with special alloy mag pads.

LTC TACTICALThe ultimate in a compact tactical pistol equipped with a super strong integral light rail built into the dust shield. The front strap of the frame is checkered 30 lpi for improved gripping surface with or without gloves. The Match grade integral ramp 4.25-inch barrel is locked up at the muzzle with an Ed Brown National Match bushing. An Ed Brown slide stop completes the lockup with the link. Cylinder and Slide provides its Tactical II hammer, sear and disconnector for a clean crisp trigger. PARA’s Power Extractor insures reliable extraction. A flat, checkered mainspring housing mates to the Ed Brown magazine well to funnel the 8-round PXT magazines with alloy base pads into the pistol.
