AMBER STANLEYAssistant Coach

Amber Stanley returns to Catawba as an assistant coach with theCatawba College swim teams. She previously helped during the2006-07 season and served five years as an assistant coach withCatawba’s Cross Country program.

Stanley had coached cross country and swimming at RobinsonHigh School prior to her first stint with Catawba. She helped guideRobinson to a pair of conference titles. Stanley had also served ashead coach of the Washington Court Athletic Club in Medina, OH.

A four-year letter-winner at Catawba in both swimming and cross country, Stanley graduat-ed in 2001 with a degree in history. As a freshman, Stanley ran to South Atlantic ConferenceFreshman of the Year honors and was first team All-SAC.

Stanley resides in Salibsury with her husband, Doug.

BETSY GRAHAMHead Coach

Betsy Graham enters her tenth season as head coach of theCatawba College women’s swim team and fifth with the men'steam. She came to Catawba from the University of Arkansas,where she served as an assistant from 1996 until coming toCatawba.

Last season, the Catawba women finished sixth and the meneighth at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Meet and pro-duced a pair of all-conference swimmers. At the NCAA IINational Meet, the men earned a 29th place finish behind PatrikDrakes, who earned honorable mention All-America Honors.

Under Graham, Catawba has produced three All-Americans and five All-Academic team mem-bers. Graham also coaches U.S. National Paralympian, Ashley Owens, a Catawba sophomore,who claimed four medals at the 2010 IPC World Championships.

Prior to her stint at Arkansas, Graham served as the head coach of the Aqua-Tex Swim Team(ATEX) in Houston, TX. As head coach of the ATEC squad, Graham enjoyed many highlightincluding a swimming finalist at the 1996 Olympic trials. She also coached two Olympic Festivalmedalists as well as junior and senior national champions. Graham also coached a 1994 and1996 male academic All-American and placed a swimmer on the national junior team. Sheowns a Level Five certification.

Before her stint at Arkansas, Graham had previously been an assistant at Ferris State andNorthern Michigan Universities. She concluded her studies at Northern Michigan, earning abachelor of science degree in recreation in 1989.

Graham, who was born in Richmond, VA, attended high school in Kingsville, TX, whereshe was an All-American in 1983-84. She was a two-time team captain at the University ofWyoming in 1987-88 and a NCAA Nationals qualifier in 1986 while swimming at Texas Tech.Graham was a senior national qualifier from 1984-86.

Graham resides in Salisbury with her daughter, Rilee Elizabeth (5).

Catawba College was founded inNewton, North Carolina in 1851 bythe German Reformed Church. In

1890, Catawba became a coeducationalinstitution, with the first woman graduatecompleting her studies in 1893. Officialsclosed the Newton campus in 1923 andmoved to its present location in Salisbury,re-opening in 1925. In 1957, theEvangelical and Reformed Church mergedto form the United Church of Christ, withwhich the College maintains affiliation. Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-

Rowan County community through its pro-grams and services. The Roberston College-Community Center, a facility built as a jointventure with the community over 35 yearsago, houses the Shuford School of PerformingArts and showcases musical and theatre pro-ductions from the college and the communi-ty. Similarly, the college’s athletic facilitieshave been enhanced be the local communityand are available to the local residents as wellas the students.In the more than 75 years since Catawba

opened its doors in the Salisbury community,it has built a tradition of successful graduateswho continue to honor the College by theirachievements and enable it through their sup-port to strengthen with each entering class.These graduates include physicians, attorneys,teachers and college professors, corporateexecutives, actors and musicians, social work-ers and others who contribute to our societyin a variety of ways.From one building, three-quarters of a

century ago in Salisbury, Catawba Collegetoday has grown to a campus of 27 buildingson 276 acres, with 189 acres devoted to anoutstanding ecological preserve. Almost all ofthe buildings on campus have undergone ren-ovations in the recent past and two new

buildings, the CatawbaCollege Center for theEnvironment and theCatawba SportsCenter are now com-pleted. Over 1,300students representingover 25 states and several foreign

countries attend Catawba. The student bodyis evenly divided among men and women.
