Catawba College was founded in Newton,North Carolina in 1851 by the German

Reformed Church. In 1890, Catawbabecame a coeducational institution, with thefirst woman graduate completing her studiesin 1893. Officials closed the Newton cam-pus in 1923 and moved to its present loca-tion in Salisbury, re-opening in 1925. In1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Churchmerged to form the United Church of Christ, with which the College maintains affiliation.

Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-RowanCounty community through its programs andservices. The Roberston College-CommunityCenter, a facility built as a joint venture with thecommunity over 35 years ago, houses theShuford School of Performing Arts and show-cases musical and theatre productions from thecollege and the community. Similarly, the col-lege’s athletic facilities have been enhanced bethe local community and are available to thelocal residents as well as the students.

In the more than 75 years since Catawbaopened its doors in the Salisbury community, ithas built a tradition of successful graduates whocontinue to honor the College by their achieve-ments and enable it through their support tostrengthen with each entering class. These grad-uates include physicians, attorneys, teachers andcollege professors, corporate executives, actorsand musicians, social workers and others whocontribute to our society in a variety of ways.

From one building, three-quarters of a centu-ry ago in Salisbury, Catawba College today hasgrown to a campus of 27 buildings on 276 acres, with 189 acres devoted to an outstanding ecolog-ical preserve.
