Nestled behind the law school on Boston College’s Newton Campus is one of nation’s elite soccer/lacrosse facilities.

Completely updated in 2008, the Newton Campus Soccer/Lacrosse Complex features a newly installed Polytan artifi-cial playing surface.

Polytan surfaces are used at the World Cup Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany, the Olympic Stadium in Munich, and on many fields both at the collegiate level and internationally.

With the addition of the Polytan artificial playing surface, coupled with offseason updates that include permanent team benches canopied to guard against the elements and a 30-seat, enclosed press box complete with a roof-deck video-filming area, Boston College is proud to boast a brand new state-of-the-art facility.

The artificial playing surface made its regular-season debut on Aug. 29, 2008 against Boston University.

Overall, the field is entering its tenth year in existence. It spent the first eight seasons as a natural grass pitch before switching to the artificial turf. Lights were added to the field prior to the 2003 campaign.

With its close proximity to the freshmen dorms, the “Super-fans,” BC’s collective student fan base, frequent games to provide a boisterous and exciting atmosphere. Decked in bright gold t-shirts, Superfans, friends and family alike sit near the action, and the close tree line provides an intimate atmosphere for soccer and lacrosse matches.

Bowen Holden enters her fifth year as the Eagles’ head coach. The 2009 season marked one of the best in school history, especially since entering the ACC in 2005. Completing its first winning season with a 9-8 record (9-9 overall), the Eagles made great strides. Five of the team’s opponents were ranked in the top 10-15 in the country throughout the entire season. Four individuals were honored as IWLCA Regional All-Americans, two made the All-ACC team (the most ever), four were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, two were honored as IWLCA Academic Honor Roll members, and the entire team was an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad for maintaining a GPA above 3.0.

In Holden’s third year, the Eagles captured their first top-10 win in program histo-ry by beating then #7-ranked North Carolina in double-overtime. This launched BC into the #4 spot in the ACC at the end of the regular season and earned BC its first-ever 4th seed in the ACC tournament. Overall, the 2008 team ended the season with a 7-10 record with several individual accolades earned along the way.

In 2007, BC compiled a 6-11 record, 1-4 in the competitive ACC. Four of the team’s five ACC opponents were ranked in the top six of the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Eagles made the IWLCA Honor Roll for the second year in a row, placing third on the Division I Honor Squads list with a 3.028 cumulative GPA. Three players received IWLCA Academic Honor Roll accolades and were named to the All-ACC Academic team.

The Eagles ended their 2006 inaugural season in the ACC 8-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Six of BC’s opponents were ranked in the top 13 in the country. Holden’s team was honored in 2006 as one of 42 teams on the IWLCA Aca-demic Honor Roll. Two of Holden’s student-athletes received individual IWLCA academic honors, and one earned IWLCA Regional All-American status for ac-complishments on the field.

Prior to arriving at BC, Holden was the associate head coach at Georgetown University in 2004 and an assistant for the previous three years. Holden helped the Hoyas to a 56-16 record over a four-year span. She also played a key role in leading the Hoyas to two NCAA Final Fours, including the 2002 NCAA National Championship game. The Hoyas won four consecutive undefeated Big East Championships and made four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. During her tenure, Georgetown had one Tewaaraton Trophy winner, eight All-Americans, a National Attacker of the Year, a National Defender of the Year and six Big East Players of the Year.

Holden is a 2001 graduate of Georgetown University, earning her Bachelor of Arts in physics. She also completed a Masters degree from Georgetown’s Public Policy Institute. Holden played lacrosse for one year at Bowdoin College in 1998 where she earned second-team regional All-American honors and team MVP as a freshman.

Fifth Season

Holden then transferred to Georgetown, where she started in goal for the next three years. She was a three-time All-American and two-time co-MVP. In her final season, she was named a captain, was an NCAA National Champion final-ist, was named to the IWLCA All-Academic squad, and was a first-team national and regional All-American. She was voted NCAA Goalkeeper of the Year as well. Also recognized for her efforts in the classroom, Holden earned the an-nual Robert A. Duffey Scholar-Athlete Award and the NCAA District of Columbia Woman of the Year Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievement and service to the community. She still ranks second on Georgetown’s all-time career leaders list with 747 saves.

Active in the lacrosse community off the field, Holden serves on the NCAA North Region All-America Committee and was previously a member of the NCAA Northeast Regional Committee.

Holden is a native of Lincoln, Mass. and graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury Re-gional High School in 1997. She currently resides in Newton, Mass. with her husband, Charlie Martin, and their two daughters, Cannon Elizabeth Martin, age two, and McClaine Ellen Martin, born in January of 2009.

A native of Norwell, Mass. and a graduate of Thayer Academy where she was inducted into the Thayer Academy Sports Hall of Fame, Kent was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She played soccer, basketball and lacrosse. In lacrosse, she was a two year captain, MVP and leading scorer, as well as a Brine/IWLCA 2nd Team All-American her senior season in 1990.

Kent is in her second year as an assistant coach for the Eagles as she was promoted in the fall of 2009 from volunteer assistant to assistant coach. In Kent’s first season with BC, she made her presence known immediately. She focuses her attention on the defensive end, but she has played a crucial role in individual development as well. Kent will look to enhance the role she plays now as an assistant coach.

Upon graduation from Colby, Kent joined the staff at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine where she taught and coached lacrosse and soccer, eventually becoming the Dean of Students and Athletic Director. Her accolades at Hyde include the 1995 Maine State Champions in lacrosse.

In addition to her coaching duties at Norwell, Kent was also the Co-director of Norwell Youth Lacrosse and the Co-director and owner of Xtreme Lacrosse and Soccer camps.

Kent has significant ties to Boston College, as her four siblings are alumni of BC: Michelle Lally O’Grady `89, Rob Lally `90, Doug Lally `91, and Greg Lally ‘96.

Kent currently lives in Norwell with her husband Jeff, and their six children: Alicia (19), Callahan (14), Kenzie (13), Parker (11), Addison (10), and Bailey (9)

Second Season

The 2010 season is McGuire’s second at BC after serving as the assistant wom-en’s lacrosse coach at Davidson College in North Carolina for one season. In 2009, McGuire worked primarily with the offense and helped the Eagles make important strides within the program and beyond. Ending the season with their best overall record since entering the ACC, the Eagles are poised to make more headway in 2010 and McGuire will play a crucial role in that effort.

In addition, McGuire acts as the recruiting coordinator for the program, organiz-ing all aspects of recruiting travel and correspondence, and is highly involved in the decision-making process.

At Davidson, McGuire helped guide the team to a record-breaking 11-5 season, including a six game win streak and most wins in a single season. She is a 2006 graduate of the University of Richmond with a degree in Rhetoric and Com-munication Studies.

At Richmond, McGuire was a four-year starter on the women’s lacrosse team who helped lead the Spiders to a #9 national ranking in 2006 and two Atlantic 10 titles in 2005 and 2006. She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2005 and 2006 and earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 first team in 2005 and 2006.

McGuire concluded her career at Richmond by setting four new program re-cords, including the career goals (141) and draw controls (115) records and the single-season goals (59) and draw controls (48) record. She was also ranked third for points in a single season (68), fourth for points in a career (146) and fin-ished third in the league for shots (7.05/g), fourth for goals (2.95/g), and fifth for points (3.40/g) and draw controls (2.40/g). She also finished 20th in the NCAA for goals (2.95/g).

A 2006 IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American selection, McGuire was the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and appeared in Sports Illustrated’s May 2006 “Faces in the Crowd” following the 2006 Atlantic 10 tournament.

A native of Darien, Conn., McGuire currently resides in Charlestown, Mass.

The Boston College lacrosse team enters the 2010 season with high hopes as it looks to build on the great success that the team exhib-ited during the 2009 fall season. “In general, we had a really good fall,” Head Coach Bowen Holden said. “The team came back in September in the best shape that they have ever been in. They continued to maintain that and take another step in the right direction.”After finishing the 2009 season 9-8 (9-9 overall), the Eagles are looking to their seniors for guidance and leadership to make this another productive and positive season. Captains Blair Clancy, Lau-ren Costello and Peyton Killeen, along with fellow seniors Suzanne Cannon and Mary Stinson have all earned a vote of confidence from the coaching staff. “The five seniors have done a really good job of setting the tone early and the three captains have worked extremely hard,” Holden said. “They have great leadership and have worked with the coach-ing staff to be the best captains they can be. We are really pleased with all five seniors and all that they have done.”The schedule this season will take the Eagles from league games with Virginia Tech and North Carolina in Chestnut Hill to ACC con-tests at Maryland, Virginia and Duke. BC will also take on a number of non-conference opponents as well, highlighted by a trip to Jack-sonville, Florida to take on the University of Jacksonville on March 2, as well as a meeting with cross-town rivals, Boston University on April 14 and Harvard on May 5.

The Eagles’ offense has grown accustomed to seeing senior Lauren Costello at the forefront of BC’s attack, as she has started every single game of her career at the Heights.“The offensive end is, no doubt, led by senior captain Lauren Costel-lo,” Holden said. “She has done a great job of leading and continues to play at a high level.”“She is supported by sophomore Brittany Wilton. She came on late last year but she really is one of our best athletes and has a lot to offer on the field, not only in her skills but in her desire to win. I’m excited to see the two of them working together.”BC’s attack will be aided in experience by seniors Mary Stinson and Sue Cannon, as well as junior Jill Amo and sophomore Ginny Gum-mersall.“Mary (Stinson) has size and strength and she will look to compete for time this spring,” Holden said. “Sue (Cannon) is transitioning from defense back to offense. She came in as an attacker and I moved her to defense her sophomore and junior year. She is now back on the attack and doing well.”Two new faces will also make their mark on the offense as freshmen Caroline Martignetti and Brooke Blue have played an integral part in the Eagles’ plan during the 2009 fall season.“Brooke started for us all fall and really has an incredible knack for the cage and her vision is incredible,” Holden said. “There is no question that she is going to do a lot for us this year. Caroline Mar-tignetti has a lot to offer as well. She hustles all over the field and is a strong presence around the crease.”

Senior captain Peyton Killeen returns to the field to lead the midfield-ers into the 2010 season. Killeen has played in 42 games during her career at BC, tallying seven goals and an assist along with 14 ground balls, 15 draw controls and seven caused turnovers.“The midfield is being run consistently by Peyton Killeen, Kristin Igoe, Sam Taylor, and Hannah Alley and we are hoping that a couple of the younger players are going to break through the midfield during the preseason to help increase our depth at that position,” Holden said. The midfield will also have five new options in freshmen Caroline Barclay, Kate Rooney, Delaney Brault, Sophia Gouraige and Jessie Coffield, who are all looking to earn some playing time in the spring.

BC will be keeping its hopes up that senior captain Blair Clancy will be able to resume her responsibilities on defense after battling through an injury. “We have missed the presence of senior tri-captain, Blair Clancy who has been out all fall with an injury,” Holden said. “She is hoping to make a return in the spring.”The injury to Clancy has not been a complete loss for the Eagles, as it has provided a chance for other members of the squad to work hard at their game and fill her shoes.“Having her out this fall has been hard, but it has allowed some of the younger players to step up,” Holden said. “In particular, Jill Rekart, who we moved from midfield to defensive midfield late in the season last year, has really stepped up into an incredible leadership position.”Sophomores Katherine Caufield, Liz Donovan and Kate Collins have all played a crucial part with Rekart to fill out the defensive end for the Eagles. Freshmen Ali Meagher and Marissa Irwin will also con-tinue to improve and look to see some minutes in the spring as well.

The Eagles will be leaning heavily on junior goalie Sheila Serafino to provide consistency and a strong backing for the team.“Sheila has really separated herself as our starter and she is a true example of what we want with this program,” Holden said. “She did not play her first two years and she went through an unbelievable transformation over the summer. It’s wonderful to see what she has done for herself and this team. Her sacrifice and hard work has cer-tainly paid off with her sitting in the starting position.”“We have a great backup in Catherine Conway. She is a competitive athlete with a lot of potential and I don’t doubt that the position will remain competitive.”

With the team for 2010 in place, Holden is not afraid, nor hesitant, to have high expectations for her players as the spring approaches.“I think our goals are bigger and more exciting than they have ever been,” Holden said. “This team is really on the same page and each and every kid on the team has been recruited by me so they all knew what they were going to get by coming to BC. By knowingly making that choice, they have committed to everything that our coaching staff has asked of them and it has really started to pay off.”The Eagles will open the 2010 season on February 20 in Smithfield, Rhode Island against Bryant University at 1:00 p.m.

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has be-come so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputa-tion as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it.Since its inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 116 na-tional championships, including 62 in women’s competition and 54 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 160 times in men’s competition and 91 times in women’s action.Since 1997, when the league adopted women’s lacrosse and a tra-dition of excellence was established, the ACC has made a total of 49 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, accounting for 68 victo-ries and six national titles. Maryland has garnered a league-record five NCAA crowns, while Virginia collected the ACC’s sixth in 2004.Last year, the ACC received four bids to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year as Maryland secured the league’s auto-matic qualifier and a No. 2 seed position. North Carolina and Duke joined the Terrapins in the NCAA 2009 field as seeded teams, No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, while Virginia was an at-large selection. Participating in the NCAA tournament for the 11th year, North Car-olina advanced to the 2009 NCAA title game, its fourth Final Four appearance and first since 2002, despite the Tar Heels’ hopes of their first national championship crown falling at the hands of top-seeded and four-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern. Since 1997, the ACC has placed 69 players on the NCAA All-Tournament team, including five postseason Most Valuable Play-ers. Maryland’s Jen Adams collected the national tournament recognition in back to back years, as the Terrapin standout was named NCAA All-Tournament MVP in 1999 and 2000 and is the only ACC player to be named Tournament MVP on more than one occasion. In 2009, Maryland’s Karri Ellen Johnson and Brittany Poise earned NCAA All-Tournament Team honors, while a North Carolina trio of Laura Zimmerman, Amber Falcone and Jenn Rus-sell collected all-tourney team recognition.Twenty-five players have garnered National Player of the Year accolades and three league coaches have been named Na-tional Coach of the Year honorees, all competing under the ACC

banner. In 2009, the league not only saw four student-athletes given National Player of the Year recognition, but Cathy Reese of Maryland, who was inducted in the Greater Baltimore Chap-ter of U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame in January 2010, became the league’s third National Coach of the Year honoree, according to womenslacrosse.com and womenslax.com. Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal earned the title in 1999 and Virginia head coach Julie Myers collected the honor in 2004. North Carolina’s Falcone was named National Defender of the Year, according to Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), womenslacrosse.com and womenslax.com, while ACC Player of the Year Caitlyn McFadden of Mary-land was named National Midfield Player of the Year by the same sources. Wrapping up the IWLCA country-wide awards, Tar Heel keeper Logan Ripley was named National Goalkeeper of the Year, while Maryland’s Karri Ellen Johnson picked up National Rookie of the Year recognition. In addition, ACC women’s lacrosse players have earned first-, second-, or third-team IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America honors 181 times, including 77 first-team honorees.

The 2008-09 academic year saw league teams capturing five na-tional team titles and 21 individual NCAA crowns. The ACC has now won 48 national team titles over the last 13 years and two or more NCAA titles in 27 of the past 29 years.A total of 130 league teams earned a berth in NCAA postseason competition, compiling a 130-74-1 (.637) mark in NCAA champi-onships. The ACC had 88 teams ranked in the final Top 25 polls, including 33 teams ranked in the Top 10, while six teams finished No. 1 in at least one poll in their respective sport. In addition, the ACC had 266 league student-athletes named to All-America teams in 2008-09, 133 men and 133 women, and 95 ACC athletes earned Academic All-America honors. The league produced nine national Player of the Year, three national Fresh-man of the Year, and five national Coach of the Year honorees.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher education to be found-ed in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries.Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and diversity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate programs of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Management placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities. After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transforming experience for young men and women.”A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura per-sonalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual development, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help others in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually. Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest graduation rates in Division IA. BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Center for Ignatian Spiritu-ality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Educa-tional Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Com-munity Partnerships; Center for Corporate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Last year, 363 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten.

DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, includ-ing a new sound system, floor and video boards,

new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Sta-dium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months.

DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Stu-dent-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renova-tion Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fund-raising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of long-time Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College Athletics contributed $18 million in 2008-09, the third-highest total in BC Athletics history and 50 percent more than just four years ago. The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athlet-ics for at least 10 consecutive years.

Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commit-ment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholar-ship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need.

In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2008-09 sea-son, the football team appeared in a school-record 10th consecutive bowl game and made a second consecutive trip to the ACC Championship Game. In 2008, the men’s ice hockey team won its third national championship, and the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tourna-

ment championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.

From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of ath-letics at Villanova University. He served as Associat-ed Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt Uni-versity from 1983-84.

His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Confer-ence championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl.

A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bach-elor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three var-sity letters as a quarterback in football during his un-dergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (recently married to Matt Eldred), a guidance counselor; John, assis-tant quarterbacks coach for the New York Jets, and Mary, marketing and sales coordinator for Fenway Sports Group.
