2013 OUTLOOK2013 OUTLOOKHead coach Acacia Walker enters her first year at the helm of the Boston College women’s lacrosse program looking to bring the Eagles back to the NCAA Tournament.

After spending the past two seasons as BC’s associate head coach, Walker, takes over the top position in 2013 with a roster returning 16 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s 10-8 campaign. The Eagles also welcome nine newcomers including a seven-member freshman class.

“Our main strength has to be experience. We have a resilient senior class and strong supporters – including a star freshman class,” Walker said. “The kids want to win more than ever, and the big thing for us is building that confidence.”

The Eagles will look to senior captains Brooke Blue, Jessie Coffield, and Ali Meagher as well as junior captain Cali Ceglarski for leadership on a team that will feature four seniors, eight juniors, seven sophomores, and seven freshmen.

BC welcomes back a pair of sophomores who earned All-ACC honors last season in Covie Stanwick and classmate Mikaela Rix. Stanwick also earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors in 2012.

“I think the better players you have, the less constant control you have to have, and I think we have a lot of cerebral players this year and a lot of girls who can make intelligent decisions on their own,” Walker said. “The more you can give that to the players and give that ownership to the players, the more ownership you can give to their success.”

ATTACKReturning Letterwinners (4): Moira Barry, Brooke Blue, Kelly McNelis, Covie Stanwick.Newcomers (1): Kate Rich.

The Eagles welcome back three players – Blue, Stanwick, and junior Moira Barry – who carry an abundance of experience at the attack position into the 2013 season.

Blue enters her final campaign having played in 54 career games (48 starts) for the Eagles. The Bethesda, Md., native has recorded 151 points in her career on 117 goals and 34 assists.

Stanwick came to The Heights as a highly acclaimed recruit and lived up to that billing as a freshman. The Baltimore, Md., resident earned ACC Rookie of the Year, All-ACC, and IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team accolades a season ago. She set BC’s freshman assists record with 27 helpers and tied the program’s freshman record for points in a season with 55.

Barry has played in 37 games over two seasons for the Eagles registering 58 career points on 46 goals and 12 assists. A native of Framingham, Mass., Barry scored 38 goals during the 2011 season.

Also at attack, BC returns junior Kelly McNelis and welcomes freshman Kate Rich. McNelis saw time in four games last season for the Eagles while Rich joins the Eagles after winning three Massachusetts state titles at Westwood High School and gaining Boston Globe All-Scholastic honors as a junior and senior.

MIDFIELDReturning Letterwinners (6): Cali Ceglarski, Rachel Igoe, Kate McCarthy, Mikaela Rix, Kate Rooney*, Carly Weilminster.Newcomers (5): Kara Magley, Sarah Mannelly, Caroline Margolis, Kathryn Riley, Emily Zlevor. * - Letterwinner in 2010

Boston College returns four players – Rix, Ceglarski, Kate McCarthy, and Rachel Igoe – with starting experience in the midfield.

Rix took home All-ACC and IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team laurels as a freshman. The Garden City, N.Y., native finished second on the team and fifth in the ACC with 2.53 goals per game in 2012. The former Garden City High School standout totaled 43 goals, three assists, 14 ground balls, and 21 draw controls a season ago.

Ceglarski enters 2013 having made 18 appearances and seven starts last season to go with 15 games played as a freshman. McCarthy – a junior who has started in 48 career games for the women’s soccer team – made her debut on the lacrosse field last season and started in all 18 games for the Eagles. A resident of Longmeadow, Mass., McCarthy finished tied for second on the team in ground balls (24) and ended up third in draw controls (27) last season. In 2012, Igoe appeared in 12 games for BC.

Kate Rooney, a senior, returns to the program after not playing lacrosse as a sophomore or junior while Carly Weilminster, a junior, could see more playing time after appearing in three games as a sophomore and missing her entire freshman campaign due to injury.

BC will feature five newcomers in the midfield including 2012 Connecticut Player of the Year Sarah Mannelly. A native of New Canaan, Conn., Mannelly earned US Lacrosse All-American status as a junior and senior. Caroline Margolis, out of Raleigh, N.C., and Emily Zlevor, from Medfield, Mass., could see immediate playing time while classmates Kara Magley and Kathryn Riley also will have an opportunity to contribute.

Junior Kara O’Connell anchors a second group of returning players. The Norwell, Mass., resident appeared in 10 games in 2012 and could have an increased role during the 2013 campaign. Sophomores Lauren Bronson and Stephanie Sabatini round out the returners on defense, with each having played in three games last season.

Freshman Molly Erdle represents the lone newcomer at the position and has the opportunity to make an immediate impact. A resident of Lone Tree, Colo., Erdle garnered ESPN Top-25 Defender accolades as a senior.

GOALKEEPERReturning Letterwinners (1): Emily Mata.Newcomers (2): Bridget Harrop, Jackie Young.

Acacia Walker enters her first season in 2012-13 as the head coach of the Boston College women’s lacrosse team taking over the position on May 23, 2012.

As either a player or coach, Walker has participated in 10 of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments and was a part of Northwestern’s three consecutive NCAA titles from 2006-08 as an assistant coach.

Walker spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as associate head coach for Boston College. In that role, Walker served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator and played a key role in recruiting, as well as in many other facets of the daily operations of the BC program. In 2012 the Eagles finished the season at 10-8 and 1-4 in the ACC. In 2011, Walker’s first season with the team, BC went 12-7 (1-4 ACC) and reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.

In 2012, Walker helped guide BC’s first-ever ACC Freshman of the Year winner, Covie Stanwick, as well as All-American Kristin Igoe. Stanwick, Igoe, and Mikaela Rix each garnered All-ACC accolades marking the first time that three BC players earned such honors in the same season. The Eagles also set a program-record with 263 draw controls on the year while scoring 230 goals as a team – the third-highest total in school history.

During the 2011 season, BC set single-season program records for wins (12) and goals scored (232). The Eagles defeated two ranked opponents – No. 7 Virginia and No. 20 Hofstra – on the season while Igoe and Brittany Wilton both garnered All-American honors.

A former p layer hersel f , Walker continued to play at the elite level after her collegiate playing days. She was named to the 2011-12 U.S. Women’s Senior National Lacrosse Team. Prior to that year’s selection, Walker had been involved with the U.S. Women’s National Team for the past nine years. She won a Gold Medal with the 2009 World Cup Team in Prague, Czech Republic and was also a member of the 2010-11 U.S. National Team that was undefeated on American soil.

Prior to working with the Eagles, Walker was the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts. During her tenure, Walker acted as the offensive coordinator, handled recruiting responsibilities and helped lead the team to two consecutive Atlantic-10 Conference championships. She also handled travel, budget management, video breakdown, and camps.

From 2005-08, she was an assistant coach at Northwestern, where the Wildcats won three consecutive NCAA National Championships and three consecutive American Lacrosse Conference titles.

Walker graduated from the University of Maryland in 2005 with a degree in American Studies. She played for the Terrapins and captained the team in her senior year. She was an IWLCA All American as well as an All-ACC selection. In 2005 she won the University of Maryland M Club ‘James H. Kehoe’ Award, and in 2004 and 2005 was a Tewaaraton Candidate, the award given to the male and female Collegiate National Player of the Year.

At age 15, Walker was the youngest member of the World Championship Under-19 Team that won gold in Perth, Australia in 1999.

Walker hails from Annapolis, Md. and currently resides in Boston, Mass.

Jennifer Kent is in her fifth year in 2012-13 as an assistant coach for the Eagles. She focuses her attention on the defensive end but also plays a crucial role in individual development.

In 2011, the Eagles had a milestone year, earning their first NCAA berth in program history, and the defensive end was a large part of that success. Goaltender Sheila Serafino was second in the ACC with 133 saves and finished fourth in saves-per-game with a 7.00 average. The defense allowed only 177 goals compared to BC’s 232 goals scored.

A native of Norwell, Mass., and a graduate of Thayer Academy – where she was inducted into the Thayer Academy Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 – Kent was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She played soccer, basketball and lacrosse for the Mules. In lacrosse, she was a two-year captain, MVP, and leading scorer. Kent earned Brine/IWLCA 2nd Team All-American honors in her senior season in 1990.

Upon graduation from Colby, Kent joined the staff at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine where she taught and coached lacrosse and soccer, eventually becoming the Dean of Students and Athletic Director. Her accolades at Hyde include the 1995 Maine State Championship in lacrosse.

After leaving Hyde, Kent became the varsity lacrosse coach at Norwell High School in 1998 where she won back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006 and was named Massachusetts Coach of the Year in 2005. In addition to her coaching duties at Norwell, Kent was also the co-director of Norwell Youth Lacrosse and the co-director and owner of Xtreme Lacrosse and Soccer camps.

Kent has significant ties to Boston College, as her four siblings are alumni of BC – Michelle Lally O’Grady `89, Rob Lally `90, Doug Lally `91, and Greg Lally ‘96.

Kent currently lives in Norwell with her husband, Jeff, and their six children: Alicia (22), Callahan (17), Kenzie (16), Parker (14), Addison (13), and Bailey (12).

NEWTON CAMPUSNEWTON CAMPUSLACROSSE/SOCCER COMPLEXLACROSSE/SOCCER COMPLEX

Nestled behind the law school on Boston College’s Newton Campus is one of the nation’s elite lacrosse/soccer facilities.

Completely updated in 2008, the Newton Campus Lacrosse/Soccer Complex features a newly installed Polytan artificial playing surface.

Polytan surfaces are used at the World Cup Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany, the Olympic Stadium in Munich, and on many fields both at the collegiate level and internationally.

With the addition of the Polytan artificial playing surface, coupled with offseason updates that include permanent team benches canopied to guard against the elements and a 30-seat, enclosed press box complete with a roof-deck video-filming area, Boston College is proud to boast a brand new state-of-the-art facility.

The artificial playing surface made its regular-season debut on Aug. 29, 2008 against Boston University.

The field became the home of BC lacrosse beginning with the 2006 season, and the team has utilized the field every year since then, excluding the 2008 campaign when the field was converted to the artificial surface. The lacrosse team had previously played its home games inside Alumni Stadium.

Overall, the field is entering its 13th year in existence. It spent the first eight seasons as a natural grass pitch before switching to the artificial turf. Lights were added to the field prior to the 2003 campaign.

With its close proximity to the freshmen dorms, the “Superfans,” BC’s collective student fan base, frequent games to provide a boisterous and exciting atmosphere. Decked in bright gold t-shirts, Superfans, friends and family alike sit near the action, and the close tree line provides an intimate atmosphere for lacrosse and soccer matches.
