In 1971, St. Mary’s Associate Professor of Art Thomas Rowe offered to sponsor lacrosse as a club. Club members

wrote a charter and presented it to the Student Government Association, which granted modest funding for equipment. With helmets, masks and pads from the Lacrosse Hall of Fame kit program, a largely inexperienced crew began practice. Rowe, unable to coach the club, sought the coaching services of U.S. Naval Academy alumni who were training at the nearby Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center.

Having constructed goals and laid out a field, Rowe scheduled matches against

college B squads, prep schools and club teams. He solicited the help of test pilots Roger Kisiel and Fred Lewis, both lieutenant commanders and former All-American lacrosse players. The 1971 season began with a combination of college and community players, who called the lacrosse stick a “cudgel.”

Lewis (now a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral) left for a tour with the fleet after just one season while Kisiel continued to coach through the 1972 season, providing team jerseys and postgame refreshments out of his own pocket. Lieutenant Karl Volland, who flew F-18 planes at Naval Air Station

Patuxent River, joined the coaching staff as an assistant.

Kisiel did not return as the coach after the 1972 season and Volland assumed the lead role with Ron Palchinsky as his assistant. Continuing as the club advisor, Rowe successfully petitioned for varsity status and the team was inducted into the Division II United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

For the 1974 season, Rowe scheduled three games in Miami during spring break. Team members spent the winter raising funds for the eight-day trip.

Volland was soon transferred to Fleet Operations and the team faced possible reduction to club status. Rowe learned that John Sothoron, an All-American goalie and recent graduate of Towson State University, had returned to St. Mary’s County. When offered the coaching position, Sothoron accepted with enthusiasm and appointed Michael Loughran as an assistant coach. During Sothoron’s tenure, St. Mary’s lacrosse became a strong and integral part of the college experience here in Southern Maryland.

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team posted the best season in program history in 2013. The Seahawks garnered the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament, an achievement which thrust fifth-year head coach Chris Hasbrouck and the Seahawks into the national spotlight. St. Mary’s finished the 2013 campaign with a 12-7 (4-2 CAC) overall record, just one win shy of tying the school record set by the 2006 squad, while the Class of 2013 seniors recorded the fifth most wins in a four-year period with 38.

After capturing the Capital Athletic Conference’s automatic bid to the national tournament, St. Mary’s dethroned two-time defending conference and national champion, Salisbury University. In the CAC championship game on May 5, the Seahawks won by a 13-11 margin for the program’s third overall league title, but first since the CAC tournament was instituted in 1999. The victory over Salisbury marked just the second win over the Sea Gulls in the last 36 years and the first since 2009.

St. Mary’s put forth its most successful seasons by battling through the 17th toughest schedule in Division III, winning seven straight for just the fourth time in program history. The 2013 ledger featured six opponents ranked in the final edition of the USILA Division III Coaches Poll while Ohio Wesleyan University received votes. The Seahawks found themselves in the Top 20 twice during the season, ending the year at No. 19.

Nine games were decided by two goals or less this season with the Seahawks owning a 6-3 mark in those contests. In the NCAA Tournament, St.

Mary’s drew No. 13 Lynchburg College for first round action. The Seahawks owned a 5-2 advantage through the first three quarters before falling 6-5 to the host Hornets.

For the fourth straight season, St. Mary’s players graced the USILA Scholar All-America list. A program-best three Seahawks were recognized for both their academic and athletic prowess – Justin Harty ’13, Albert Mitchell ’13, and Patrick Mull ’13. Harty and Mitchell were further honored with a selection to play in the 2013 USILA/LAXWORLD Division III North-South Senior All-Star game.

Coach Hasbrouck mentored five more all-conference picks this season to bring his total to 23 All-CAC selections, including 12 first-team nods, during his five seasons at the helm of the Seahawks. Harty, Mull, and Matt Tarrant ’15 all earned first team honors while Mitchell and Ben Love ’14 landed on the second team. Both Mitchell and Mull finished their Seahawk careers as two-time all-stars.

THE ATTACKPatrick Mull ’13 quarterbacked the Seahawks’ offense this season, assisting on nearly 20% of the team’s 196 goals in 2013. Mull finished his career with 112 helpers, having led St. Mary’s in this category for four straight years. He notched his 100th career assist with a seven-point performance versus Goucher College on April 3.

One of the main benefactors of Mull’s passing finesse was Ben Love ’14. Love enjoyed his best campaign yet with the Seahawks, nearly

quadrupling the scoring output from his first two seasons combined. He dominated the scoring for St. Mary’s with a team-best 38 goals after notching only 11 in his first two seasons. Love will enter his senior campaign needing just one goal for his 50th as a Seahawk.

Conor Jordan ’16 left no doubt that he will be an integral part of the Seahawks’ attack, scoring four goals in his collegiate debut against No. 11 Roanoke College in the team’s season-opener. Jordan went on to finish his rookie year with a third-best 24 tallies. Stew D’Ambrogi ’13 (6g, 9a) and Eric Simon ’15 (4g, 1a) provided a solid effort on attack as well, helping St. Mary’s to be a force to be reckoned with.

THE MIDFIELDTeam captain Gordy Long ’14 commanded a very talented and experienced midfield unit this season. Long finished sixth in scoring as he tallied 19 goals, including a team-leading three game-winning goals, and five assists. Matt Tarrant ’15 was the top midfielder for the Seahawks, finding the back of the net for a team-best 31 goals en route to first team All-CAC honors. Tarrant really dominated the center of the field after switching from attack to midfield a few games into the season.

Will Lerch ’15 was close behind with 30 points on 20 goals, including a trio of game-winners, and 10 helpers. Nate Babcock ’15 (10g, 5a) and Tim Perugini ’15 (7g, 10a) came into their own this season as both contributed 10-plus points for the first time in their young careers. All-American Taylor Cook ’13 saw limited action in 2013, scoring five goals in eight games before being sidelined with an injury.

• DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS – Cody Tidwell ’14, J.G. Hahn ’16, and Austin Toland ’16 comprised the defensive side of the Seahawk midfield unit. Tidwell chipped in 18 ground balls and a goal in 16 games played while Hahn came away with two

goals and two assists plus 14 ground balls in 16 contests. Toland earned quality playing time in 10 games with 10 loose ball pickups.

• FACE-OFF SPECIALISTS – Team captain Albert Mitchell ’13 put forth his best campaign at the X, winning 60-percent of the 355 face-offs he battled in and ranking in the Top 50 in Division III in face-off percentage. Mitchell paced the Seahawks for the fourth consecutive season with a career-best 130 ground balls. He added a goal and an assist in helping to ignite the Seahawk offense.

Alex Lykens ’13, along with Reese Cassard ’15 and Teddy Secor ’16, provided Mitchell with a breather when needed. Lykens went 14-of-47 in face-offs while Cassard and Secor combined for a 7-of-23 effort. Cassard and Secor will look to carry Mitchell’s success forward in 2014.

• LONG-STICK MIDFIELDERS – Dalton Yohn ’13 proved to be one of the Seahawks’ top long-stick midfielders this season. Yohn led a talented but young corps of LSMs that provided strong wing support during face-offs and solid defensive help in transition. He ended his senior year second in both ground balls (63) and caused turnovers (21).

Collin Brown ’15 is primed to take over for Yohn on the wing next year after stepping on the field for all 19 games, contributing 13 ground balls. Coloman DeBor ’15, a transfer from Roanoke College, will look to provide depth next season after spending 2013 learning St. Mary’s system.

THE DEFENSETeam captain Justin Harty ’13 led a solid Seahawk defensive unit that ranked 34th in Division III in man down defense, successfully killing nearly 81% of opponents’ extra-man opportunities1. Harty was the team’s top defender, collecting a team-best 30 caused turnovers and fourth-best 37 ground balls.

He was a hard-nosed defenseman who effectively shut down the opponent’s top attackman, catching the eye of opposing coaches and earning postseason recognition for the first time in his career.

David Mitchell-McShane ’14, Grant Lowenfeld ’15, and Phil Cappello ’16 rounded out one of the top defensive units in the region. Mitchell-McShane started all 19 contests for St. Mary’s while rookie Cappello earned a starting role for the last nine games of the season. Mitchell-McShane was third with 12 takeaways while Cappello added 20 ground balls and six caused turnovers in his first season as a Seahawk. Lowenfeld picked up quality experience, seeing action in 15 games and forcing nine turnovers.

IN THE CAGEScott Marsh ’13, affectionately called ‘Panda’ by his teammates, was an integral part of St. Mary’s highly productive season. In his first, and only, season with the Seahawks, Marsh posted a 10-3 record as the starter between the pipes after garnering the principal role for the seventh game of the season. He claimed the starting position following a 13-save performance in the final 34 minutes against No. 12 Denison University just four days earlier.

Marsh finished the season ranked 16th in the nation in save percentage as he stopped 62.3% of the 423 shots faced while ranking 28th in goals against average, allowing 7.35 goals per game.

Zack Blewett ’14 and Joey Casey ’16 will battle next year for the starting role in Marsh’s absence. Casey started the first six games of the 2013 season, earning CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on March 4, while Blewett notched a .556 save percentage in two games played.

Chris Hasbrouck wrapped up his fifth season at the helm of the St. Mary’s men's lacrosse program by leading the Seahawks to their best finish in the program’s 40-year history. During his short tenure, Hasbrouck has worked to have St. Mary's shine in the national spotlight, leading the program to its first-ever national tournament berth.

This season, the Seahawks posted a 12-7 (4-2 CAC) overall record, tying for second most wins all-time. He guided the squad to their third Capital Athletic Conference championship title as well as their first NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament appearance. St. Mary’s posted a 13-11 win over two-time defending CAC and national champion, Salisbury University, on Salisbury’s home field for the conference crown. Hasbrouck mentored three United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-Americans (the most of any year) plus five All-CAC selections.

St. Mary's advanced to its fourth straight semifinal matchup under Hasbrouck in 2012 after earning the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. The Seahawks recorded their second 10-win campaign in four years. Taylor Cook '13 and Peter Windsor '12 both earned All-America honors while Windsor became the program's sixth Scholar All-American.

In 2011, St. Mary's appeared in its third straight league semifinal contest after winning three straight to secure the No. 5 seed in the playoffs. Dennis Rosson '11 became the program's 12th All-American selection.

The Seahawks achieved their first 10-win season since 2007 during his second season at the helm

while Hasbrouck mentored the program's 11th All-American honoree and four All-CAC picks.

In just his first season as the Seahawks’ head coach, he was voted the 2009 CAC Coach of the Year. Hasbrouck led St. Mary's to the conference tournament semifinals as the No. 2 seed as well as the program's first win over Salisbury in 32 years. That same year, he coached two All-Americans and six all-conference selections.

Hasbrouck took over the Seahawk men's lacrosse program after two years as an assistant. He helped the program to a two-year mark of 19-14 and worked with a pair of conference rookies of the year as the offensive coordinator. St. Mary's averaged 10.53 goals per game in 2008, ranking 44th in Division III, while the team advanced to the 2007 CAC title game with a 12-6 record.

The Suffern, N.Y. native brought a wealth of experience to St. Mary's, having been a part of two storied men's lacrosse programs at Salisbury University and Division II Limestone College for 13 years.

Hasbrouck served as the Limestone head coach for two seasons before joining the St. Mary's athletic staff in September of 2006. He led the Saints to a two-year mark of 26-7, winning the Deep South Conference title both years. Limestone finished as national runner-up in 2005 with a 15-2 mark and that same year, the Saints set NCAA Division II records for goals (338) and points (520). Hasbrouck had five players earn All-America honors while garnering the 2005 USILA Division II National Coach of the Year award.

The good fortunes of the St. Mary’s men’s lacrosse program this season did not go unnoticed as several players received conference and national awards.

Five Seahawks represented the College on the 2013 All-Capital Athletic Conference teams as announced by league commissioner Tom Byrnes on May 1. Justin Harty ’13 and Patrick Mull ’13 as well as Matt Tarrant ’15 were named to the first team while Albert Mitchell ’13 and Ben Love ’14 earned second team All-CAC honors. Mitchell and Mull were repeat honorees for St. Mary’s.

Then on May 21, Harty, Mitchell and Mull were selected to the 2013 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-America Team as announced by John Spring, the USILA executive director.

The trio now brings the number of Seahawks honored as Scholar All-Americans to nine all-time. In all, 92 NCAA Division I, II, and III men’s lacrosse players were honored by the USILA for their excellence in the classroom. Harty, Mitchell and Mull were recognized at the 2013 USILA All-America Awards presentation on May 25 at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott.

Harty, Mitchell and Mull were the only Capital Athletic Conference players named to the list. Harty earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in public policy studies with a minor in history as he compiled a 3.015 cumulative grade point average in four years. Mitchell obtained a B.A. in sociology with a 3.343 GPA while Mull completed his degree in history with a minor in educational studies and finished with a 3.22 GPA.

Harty and Mitchell found out on May 21 as well that they had been selected to play at the 2013 USILA/LAXWORLD Division III North-South Senior All-Star game. The duo played in their last collegiate game on May 24 on Edith Robb Dixon Field on the campus of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania.

Harty and Mitchell were part of a 32-man roster that featured only four players from the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). The twosome represented St. Mary’s well as Harty contributed a pair of caused turnovers while Mitchell won 7-of-13 face-offs and scooped up five ground balls in leading the South to a 12-11 overtime win over the North.
