NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affi rm that athletics events should refl ect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, family-friendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

Catawba College students will tell you they wouldn’t tradeour campus — or its location — for any other. You won’teither. Catawba is located on 210 wooded acres in historicSalisbury, North Carolina. Comfortable and upbeat, our cam-pus is ideal for interaction, involvement, and the attainmentof knowledge. And our location provides countless possibil-ities for exploration.

You’ll notice a hint of the past and a glimpse of the futurein the design of our 27 campus buildings. Surrounded bybeautifully landscaped grounds, the facilities offer a specialblend of the traditional and contemporary. Two buildingsconstructed eight years ago are immediate eye-catchers. Theyare Cannon Student Center, which promises to be a specialgathering place for students and faculty alike, and Ralph W.Ketner Hall, which houses the Ketner School of Business andCatawba’s Division of Education Services.

Other key buildings include the landmark, 70-year-oldHedrick Administration Building, Omwake-Dearborn Chapel,Corriher-Linn-Black Library, Robertson College-CommunityCenter, Shuford Science Building and Abernethy PhysicalEducation Center.

Students live in seven residence halls — Stanback, Barger-Zartman and Hollifield halls for women, and Abernethy, PineKnot and Salisbury-Rowan halls for men. Woodson Hallhouses both men and women.

Salisbury is situated just off of Interstate 85, a major north-south artery that gives convenient access to the entertainment, recreational and cultural activities of Charlotte, Greensboroand Winston-Salem.

Students sometimes pack up on weekends and head up tothe Blue Ridge Mountains for hiking or skiing, or to theCarolina coast to enjoy the sun, sand and surf of the AtlanticOcean.

SETTING CAMPUS LIFE

The Catawba campus is a special place, with a distinctsense of warmth. That warmth comes from the embrace ofSalisbury, a friendly Southern town which has always takengreat interest in the college and its students.

The campus also has the influence of 144 years of tradi-tional values such as responsibility, involvement and caringfor others.

There is a wealth of organizationsall in need of extra man-and-woman-power to complete a full agenda ofactivities. Take your pick of service, honorary and scholastic clubs, pub-lications, musical and theatre artsgroups with on-stage and back-stage assignments, religious activi-ties, and both intercollegiate andintramural athletics. Plus, there’sCannon Student Center, hub of

campus student life with agreat lounge, well-stocked bookstore, CareerCenter offices, dining halland post office.

The center also hostsentertainment eventsthrough its student-runWigwam Productions, fea-turing acts from the bestcomedy and variety clubson the college entertain-ment circuit. (In fact,Catawba won national

recognition as Campus of the Year, 1993 for its entertainmentbookings!) In addition, we have our local productions, like“Talk Show,” and those crazy airband contests. And for yourburger and pizza pleasure, there’s McCorkle’s, Catawba’ssnack bar and all-around “hangout.”

The Catawba campus really is a busy place — as busy asyou want it to be. Remember that an active and involved stu-dent life usually leads to a highly satisfying and enjoyable col-lege experience, and that’swhat all of us at Catawbawant you to have. It’s allpart of what makesCatawba a wonderfulplace to spend your col-lege years.

“I’m glad I choseCatawba. It’s a familyand that’s why I like it. I think thebest school for you is the school where you feelcomfortable. For me, it’s a smaller school where, when I seesomebody walking down the hall or across the campus, I cancall them by name. I’m not just another one of thousands ofpeople. That makes me feel good. It’s a better learning envi-ronment, and that’s a very big plus.”

— Margaret Cleaves, Charlotte, NC.
