Reflection

Following Jesus can mean leaving some things behind. What do you need to let go of to follow Jesus more fully in your life?

“While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake;

the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.’

Simon said in reply, ‘Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.’

When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing.

They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, ‘Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.’

For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.’

Dear Parishioners and Supporters of Saint Joseph Cathedral Parish, An essential element of Christianity is sharing our faith in and relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. This sacred activity is the privilege of every disciple, the pur-pose of every parish, and the mission of the Church. Each disciple communicates faith and shares his or her relationship with Jesus through a life reflecting Gospel values and communicating God’s compassionate mercy. As a parish we share our faith as we gather to celebrate the sacraments, participate in religious formation process-es, and engage in social outreach. Parishes of the Diocese of San Jose the mission of the Church that is beyond the capacity of any one person or individual parish. Each year the Diocese of San Jose invites every parish to support this mission through the Annual Diocesan Ap-peal. The theme of this year’s ADA is “Hand in Hand in Ministry”. The ADA supports diocesan initiatives, programs, and ministry to accomplish this goal. The initiatives, programs and ministries of the Diocese of San Jose are essential to the proclamation of the Gospel and vital in addressing the needs of people throughout Santa Clara County. The ADA helps fund the formation of lay and ordained leaders, outreach to marginalized and isolated persons, and supports the work of Bishop McGrath and Bishop Cantú. We benefit directly as a parish through this campaign. In addition to the subsidy we receive as the cathedral parish, twenty percent of my salary is subsidized for my work in the Chancery Office. All funds raised above our goal are returned to the parish. This year these funds will be used to begin an upgrade to LED lighting in the basilica and to offer scholarships for teenagers in the parish to participate in a confirmation retreat experience and the Diocesan Youth Retreat in Lake Tahoe next summer. Our goal this year is $137,000. Through your generosity we exceeded our goal last year. Thank you! I appeal to your generosity again this year. I know that together we can meet and exceed this financial goal. A concurrent goal of 100% participation will ensure our success. Thank you for your ongoing generosity and the many ways you support St. Joseph Cathedral Parish and the Diocese of San Jose. Sincerely, Fr. Joseph M. Benedict, Pastor

Our invitation from Bishop McGrath and Bishop Cantú to participate in the 2019 Annual Diocesan Appeal will arrive to you by mail if you are on our mailing list. Please keep in mind as you receive this personal invi-tation that this Appeal not only assists our parish in fulfilling their obli-gation but at the same time supports the common services and programs that assist all 53 parishes and missions in the Diocese of San Jose. This year, the theme is Hand in Hand In Ministry. As members of Christ and his Church we are connected to one another—parishioner to paris-hioner, family to family and parish to parish. Our gifts are to be given in gratitude for what God has entrusted to us. A gift/pledge to the Annual Diocesan Appeal will help the work of our local Church to grow and flourish through our Santa Clara County diocesan faith community. Al-so, when our parish reaches its goal of $137,000 in cash, 100% of addi-tional funds received will be returned to St. Joseph’s for use in our pa-rish. Please reflect upon your blessings and in gratitude, consider a pled-ge to the 2019 Annual Diocesan Appeal.

Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants and not on the tongue.

The faithful should refrain from holding hands dur-ing the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer.

Sign of Peace should be a greeting that does not require shaking hands or touching

These adaptations are to remain in effect through-out the Diocese until conditions allow for them to be rescinded at which time our parish will be notified.

Please know that the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seri-ously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symptoms to remain at home. Thank you.

In today’s Gospel, we read a description of the developing relationship between Jesus and Simon Peter. Jesus teaches from Simon's boat. Jesus turns to Simon and instructs him about where to lower the fishing nets. Simon and others have

been fishing throughout the night and have not caught anything. Simon protests, claiming that such an effort would be futile. Simon ultimately obeys Jesus and low-ers his nets into the deeper water as directed. Notice here that Peter calls Jesus by the title “master.” He al-ready recognizes Jesus as a person of authority. They catch so many fish that the nets begin to tear; Jesus' presence has created abundance out of scarcity, just as it did at the wedding feast at Cana, which we heard at Mass just a few weeks ago. Simon Peter becomes a fol-lower of Jesus immediately. He calls Jesus “Lord”—the title given to Jesus after his Resurrection—and protests his worthiness to be in Jesus' presence. Today's Gospel, therefore, marks a turning point in the relationship be-tween Jesus and Peter. Two of Simon's partners are also named as witnesses to the event described in today's Gospel: Zebedee's sons, James and John. Yet Jesus' words are addressed only to Simon. Jesus gives Simon a new job, telling him that he will become a different kind of fisherman. No longer will he catch fish; instead he will catch people. In these words, we hear the beginning of the leadership role that Peter will have within the community of disciples. Peter was chosen for this role. His task will be to bring others to Jesus. Already he is doing so; the Gospel tells us that all the fishermen with Peter also left their nets and followed Jesus. We contin-ue to speak of Peter's leadership and influence in the Church today when we call the pope the “successor of Peter.” We participate in the mission of the Church when we bring people to Christ through the example and positive influence of our lives.

Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Scholastica—the Patron Saint of Nuns c. 480 – February 10, 542 Saint Scholastica was the twin sister of Saint Benedict. Benedict stud-

ied in Rome but then decided to devote all of his life to the search for God. He organized several community dwellings and finally established a very im-portant monastery at Monte Cassino. Then Scholastica helped her brother found a community of religious women about five miles south of his monas-tery. Scholastica and Benedict visited together only once a year. They would spend the day praying and speaking of God and the spiritual life. When Bene-dict said he had to return to the monastery, Scholastica begged him to stay and talk awhile longer. Benedict refused, saying that his rule required that the monks be in their monastery at night. Heart-broken, Scholastica folded her hands, put her head on the table, and quietly wept and prayed. As she prayed, a storm began, so terrible that no one could venture out. “What have you done?” Benedict exclaimed to his sister. She explained that since he had refused the favor she has asked, she had turned to God instead, and God granted it. Benedict and Scho-lastica continued their conversation and prayer until morning. Three days later, Scholastica died. The brother and sister had enjoyed their final conversation. Benedict had her buried in the tomb he had built for himself. St. Gregory the Great said of Scholastica, “She could do more because she loved more.” Scholastica and Benedict gave themselves totally to God and gave top priority to deepening their friendship with him through prayer. They sacrificed some of the opportuni-ties they would have had to be together as brother and sister in order better to fulfill their vocation to the religious life. In coming closer to Christ, however, they found they were also closer to each other. In joining a religious community, they did not forget or forsake their family but rather found more brothers and sisters.
