Advent: A Time of “Waiting Up” It’s a strange little phrase, but one that continues to be used by generation after
generation of children in the U.S. When a child is running after another child, instead of yelling out to his friend, “stop”, “slow down”, “let me catch up”, the most often used expression is: “Hey, Wait up! Wait up! Would you please wait up!” And what a strange expression. Asking someone to stop or slow down and all the while doing so in an upward direction. But you see, for a child everything is indeed up. And in our lives, no matter how old or young we may be, not only are we asking others to wait for us, but we are constantly waiting ourselves. And how we have this love/hate relationship with waiting. We hate to wait in traffic or in long lines at the store, but for some reason we can’t help but find ourselves reveling in the waiting for what might come next in life. When we are children, we want to grow up. When we are adults, we strive for fulfilment and success. When we are older, we look forward to the rest that we feel we deserve from all the work we have done.
But at times in our lives, we may find that we have indeed hoped for too little. How very tragic. Pope Benedict had said that “hope marks humanity’s journey but for Christians it is enlivened by a certainty: the Lord is present in the passage of our lives, He accompanies us and will one day also dry our tears. One day, not far off, everything will find its fulfilment in the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of justice and peace.” What beautiful words about waiting in hope. Yet how is it that we can wait in such a meaningful way when life at times just seems to be filled with one more boring task to complete and obligation to fulfill? How can we come to experience that joyful sense of expectation that has the power to make our days ever more precious, even though they may not be perfect? The answer lies in the words of St. Paul. We have to learn to wait like the Corinthians, who St. Paul notes “were waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ”. My friends, we are to consciously wait for the revelation of Christ, to wait for Him today and in His second coming. Yet to do this requires that we have the courage to stop running and look up! We have to be the ones not yelling “wait up” but who are actually “waiting up”.
