Today’s boys...tomorrow’s gentlemen
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 2 Term 3
From the PrincipalOne of the things that is valued by
members of our College, both current and
prospective, is the feeling of community.
It is recognised again and again, in
various forums, as an attribute that sways
people’s decisions to enrol their sons
and to work at our school. Much of this
community feel is as a result of our tight
geographical location, where we cross
each other’s paths many times a day.
As the number of students at our College
has increased, geography alone cannot
be relied on to maintain this important
aspect of our culture.
The College has responded to the
increase in student population in several
ways. In 2014, we appointed a Year 7
Transition Coordinator, thus increasing
the allocation of time and personnel to
the academic and pastoral wellbeing of
our youngest cohort. The new Pastoral
Care centre is aimed at providing student
access to Pastoral Care before, during
and after school hours, and reinforces
our aim to make our boys accountable
and independent. In the past two years,
the Heads of House have focussed not
only on boys in their own House, but also
on boys at risk in other Houses, so that
if they ever present to the Pastoral Care
office, they can be looked after by any of
the members on duty.
This week sees the start of another
initiative. Each week, a member of the

Pastoral Board will invite about a dozen
boys to an afternoon tea that will occur
straight after school. The purpose is to
emphasise that the new building and
facilities should be seen as being available
to all our boys. The therapeutic value of
small group meetings is well established,
but what our Pastoral Board is aiming
to do is engage in a conversation with
every member of our student community,
making each boy feel included, valued
and listened to.
Most importantly for the Pastoral Board,
it is hoped these soirées provide an
opportunity to build relationships with
boys who, because they are quiet, well-
mannered, and behave impeccably, may

not receive the attention they are due in
the busy day-to-day life of the College.
We strongly feel that boys should not
have a reduced pastoral amenity because
of good behaviour, and this initiative
is aimed at ensuring that, despite our
growth in numbers, the community we
are proud of continues to thrive.
When your son receives his invite, please
strongly encourage him to accept and
attend. Even further, encourage him
to relax, speak up, and showcase his
personality, interests and opinions at
the gatherings. This attempt to make
sure that it is not just the squeaky
wheel getting the oil will only succeed if
students and parents deem it worthwhile
supporting, so as an extra incentive,
let your son know there will be some
gastronomy to follow. I look forward to the
success of our student afternoon teas, and
to the benefits we all expect to flow.
Mr Domenic Burgio
Principal

Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation
Want to know more about the topics your children are covering in RE? Married to a Catholic, but not one yourself? Thinking of working
in a Catholic institution? Why not take a course at the Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation. Many courses are during school
time, there are no exams or assignments, and you don’t have to be a ‘good’ Catholic (or a Catholic at all!). Topics for Term 3 include
“Exploring the Person, Life and Message of Jesus,” and “The Living Liturgy of the Church”. For more information or to register for a
course, visit www.maranathacentre.org.au or call 9241 5221.
Nature Play WA
Nature Play WA are proud to present a screening of Project Wild Thing right here in Perth at the University of WA.
Project Wild Thing is a movement to get more kids (and their families) outside and reconnecting with nature. The film is an
ambitious, feature-length documentary that takes a funny and revealing look at a complex issue – the increasingly disparate
connection between children and nature.
Find out more about the movie, watch the official trailer and book, HERE.
