From the Rabbi
We are reminded that we have choices on how to
see that word. We can live “for” the day; in which case our
life is defined by outside forces and controls. Or, we can
live “in” the day; blessing each day and, by what we
choose to do, making each day “count” for something. We
are reminded in our tradition of the importance of counting
every day as a blessing and thus, making everyday count.
Our family relationships can help in teaching us
how to live “in” the day, or, as some would say, “in” the
moment. The festivals we celebrate together, the shared
moments, the stories and lessons passed from generation
to generation, all serve as pieces of the puzzle that help
determine who we become. And yes, I mean this even in
families in which there are issues between family members
and in which every memory may not be the best. All of the
experiences count for something, all go into the puzzle that
we try to assemble.
Despite the contingencies of everyone’s unique
family dynamics, there are moments and memories that
have served to count for major milestones in our lives.
Those moments are often embraced by events. They are
often moments that have been part of a plan: a bar/bat
mitzvah, a graduation, a marriage. They are often
moments that are embraced by sadness, as in illness or
death. They provide a memory and a moment that is
forever frozen in the reality of truth. These are moments
that remind us, what really is true and enduring in our life.
This is the season when we count the Omer. We mark the
days from planting to first harvest. Let us count each of
our days as a blessing, living in each one and celebrating
the moments of life that make us count, as we look forward
to the celebration of Shavuot.
Shalom,
Rabbi Jacob Luski
We Jews have a curious historical
custom that emerges between Passover and
the festival of Shavuot. Daily, we count off
the day. We say a blessing that counts the
Omer, a vestige of the agricultural foundation
of our Jewish civilization. The counting ritual
served to mark the days from the planting to
the first harvest. This serves to link the individual to the
cycle of nature and remind each of us that we are part of
something greater than our own self.
I focus on the idea of counting. This is a very
anxious time for our world. Issues of anxieties and fear
permeate every aspect of our society. Against this backdrop,
we look at our families. In a world of anxiety and unease, it
is often our family that provides the sense of belonging and
security that we feel lacking in the world. A basic drive of
each of us, as taught by the tradition, is the need for
community and belonging. In most cases, no matter how far
we may travel in time or space or spirit, we are still welcome
“home.” It is the source of pieces of the puzzle that we
spend our life trying to assemble: the puzzle that is our life.
The time has come to revisit the power of the
counting tradition associated with the Omer. We need to
reassert the power of counting the importance of each day,
and the moments that make up the puzzle pieces that we try
to find and use as we assemble our own life’s puzzle. There
is a wonderful midrash on a verse from Deuteronomy. The
commentary is on a single word, hayom, which means
“the day.”
Last year this month I came to interview at CBI
and now a year later we will all be celebrating my first (in
the sense that I taught William from the beginning of his
lessons) Bar Mitzvah. As you all know, William Gross has
an amazing voice and I am looking forward to his special
day.
It is hard to believe that it has been a year
already. The ups and downs have kept me and my family
quite busy. We hope that you have adjusted to our “Miami”
ways and will accept us as part of the CBI family. We are
who we are and differences are neither bad nor good, they
are just differences. What is it the French say? “Viva la
Differance!” Cynthia & Jason have had the biggest
adjustment and have really tried to make an effort to fit
into the Congregation, not always with success. However,
the two of them never give up and they have unbreakable
spirits. Give them a chance and I know you will learn to
love and respect their brilliance, unwavering dedication to
Judaism, empathy for everyone they meet and their fierce
loyalty, just as many of you already have.
In light of the recent Ritual Committee ruling
regarding women wearing Tallitot when having an Aliyah ,
Cynthia has offered to lend anyone one of her 17 Tallitot to
try for ease and spiritual comfort before investing in them.
I have them in my office if anyone wishes to take her up on
the offer (She really is a mensch).
B’Shalom Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein
Passover has passed over and May
has arrived. Our first Passover here at CBI
was a delight. I hope all of you enjoyed it as
much as I did and that you invited someone
over for Seder or dinner. Cynthia, Jason and
I would like to thank the Lewis’ for having us
over for the first Seder. The company was
great and the food was delicious; even the vegan entrees
were very tasty.
I have fond memories of Lag BaOmer when I was in
Israel studying. At JTS, the Cantorial candidates also spend a
year in Israel. Everyone and I mean everyone, goes to the
beach and has a barbeque on Lag BaOmer. The smell of
charcoal and Kosher BBQ permeates the air. Weddings
everywhere and of course, haircuts (I rarely think about
those).
At the end of the month we finish counting the Omer
and proceed happily into Shavuot. Shavuot is one of the most
enjoyable and important holidays. We celebrate God’s gift of
the Ten Commandments by reading them from the Torah and
of course with special food. Shavuot is known as the three
“C” holiday: Commandments; Cheesecake (for the dairy
we eat), and Conversion (because we read the Book of
Ruth.)
From the Cantor’s Keyboard
The Ten Commandments, not just
God’s gift to the world, but a gift that has
sustained us for over 5,000 years, and what
sustains us still in these difficult economic
and perilously dangerous times. From God to
Moses to Jews through the millennia, the Ten
Commandments have given us and the world a blueprint for
good and civilized life. And every year we celebrate this on
Shavuot. Thank God we live in a free country where we can
joyously come together as a community and celebrate this
most holy day. And more than this, we take this time to pass
this precious gift on to our children and grandchildren. This
summer my son Matthew and his wife Toni will give me my
first grandchild. After the Shema, the next thing I will be
whispering in her precious little ears are the Ten
Commandments. These are tough times and we need these
strong commandments to sustain our country, us as Jews
and our future generations. Lets all recognize and celebrate
this holy day together as a family at CBI beginning on
Thursday, May 28. Bring your children and grandchildren to
the pre-Shavuot program beginning at 6 pm and stay for our
delicious homemade dairy dinner sponsored by our Youth
Department. After dinner, be inspired at services and the
Tikun Leyl Shavuot study. All this is topped off by a delicious
ice cream dessert brought to you by CBI’s

This message was intended to be
my farewell address as president of our
congregation. Now it appears that I will
have a 2-year plus one-month term of office
due to a need to rework our slate of officers.
With my successor Gail Warren’s sudden illness, she
and her family--Steve, Allison and Michael--are focusing on
securing the best health care Gail needs and as such she has
had to step down as incoming president. As a
Congregational Family, we can continue to pray for good
h e a l t h , s t r e n g t h a n d u n d e r s t a n d i n g .
Gail’s health gives us all perspective on what’s really
important. As a shul we’ve recently struggled to make tough
budgetary decisions based on an operating deficit twice the
amount that was projected and also brace ourselves for the
probability of tough financial times ahead. These decisions
were not made in a vacuum. The Executive Committee and
several sub-committees met many times and then addressed
the budget as a single issue at the March Board of Trustees
meeting.
We will have two congregational meetings this
ear. The first is Wednesday, May 6th, to vote on our budget
and the second meeting is Sunday, June 7th, to vote on our
slate of officers and Board of Trustees. Please make every
effort to attend as it is imperative that we get a quorum at
From the President
From the Executive Director
both meetings.
Now more than ever, we need to pull together to keep our
synagogue operating smoothly. Please give generously of
your time and expertise by volunteering in an area that is
meaningful to you. The staff welcomes help with
answering telephones and sending out mailings, and there
are fundraising, education, ritual, and other committees
that can utilize the diverse talents of our congregants.
Thank you for your continued support.
Shalom,
Susan Marger LeVine, President

children’s voices raised in song and prayer as they
take their places along side all those who continue to
make services meaningful, spiritual and successful
here at CBI.
This month the schedule for participation is as
follows:
May 2 – Grade 5
May 16 – Grade 4
May 23 – Grade 3
JUNIOR CONGREGATION

7) are invited to participate in our special age-appropriate
Shabbat Service in the Chapel. Junior Congregation will meet on
Saturday, May 2, 9 and 16 at 10:00 a.m.
CHANGE IN ACADEMIC SETTING
We welcome children who have changed their academic settings. Please contact the PRTT office for information and a registration form.
THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL
The school year is coming to an end. We have been
keeping very busy all year.
We began the year early with the High Holidays. The
children learned about the symbols of the holidays as they dipped
apples in honey and ate round raisin challah.
The children helped decorate our synagogue Sukkah, then
enjoyed snacks and lulav shaking under the branches.
During the Hanukka season the preschoolers
entertained at Menorah Center and all of the students
enjoyed latkes and dreidel.
In January, the preschool children gathered
together for our Annual Havdalah Pizza Party. Hazzan
Goldstein led us as we sang songs. Our new Youth
Director, Sandy Brasch, led Havdalah, and the children
heard a story before we ate pizza and ice cream. Many
preschool classes planted a vegetable garden for Tu
B’shevat. Our garden continues to grow. We enjoy
fresh lettuce and tomatoes for snack.
Purim brought a special treat. Each child made his very
own hamentashen! What a delicious success!
April brought Passover. All of the children participated in a
Practice Seder and each student decorated his own Haggadah. The
month ended with Yom Ha Atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.
Congregation B'nai Israel builds a Kotel and services are lead there
for Shabbat. This was great time to explore traditional Israeli foods
such as hummus and pita, falafel and Israeli salads. We went on an
imaginary trip to Israel. Talk with your children about how special
the state of Israel is to your family. It is never too early.
Finally there is Lag B Omer. This day is the 33rd day of the
counting of the Omer, about a month after the last Passover Seder.
This is the one-day during the counting of the Omer that we may
have celebrations. Go on a picnic, play games and relays. Have fun.
It’s a great day for a party!
2009-2010 registration for Pauline Rivkind Preschool is now
in full swing. We have classes for children one-year old through five
-year olds. Our school participates in the Florida Voluntary Pre
Kindergarten for children who turn four by September 1, 2009. Call
the school office, ext. 211, if you have any questions or need a
registration form sent to you!

YOUTH DEPARTMENT The air in the Youth Lounge is filled with
excitement. The kids can feel it. The end of school is
almost here and the long awaited summer is upon them.
This summer we have four USYers who will participate in
different Israel Pilgrimage trips. Twelve of our youth will
spend the summer at Camp Ramah Darom and several
will join as staff.
My first year as Youth Director at CBI has been
filled with joy and learning. I have learned much about
myself and your children and have grown with them and
bonded as a group.
As of this writing USYers have raised over
$500.00 for Social Action/Tikun Olam. I was proud when
there was unanimous agreement to send funds to support
Israel during this difficult year. They felt grateful for their
lives when they saw the rows of tents at the homeless
community where they delivered lunches for its residents.
We felt the joy of Shabbat as we brought the Shabbat
spirit to the residents of Toby Weinman Assistant Living
Facility. They have volunteered over 400 hours at CBI
serving Shabbat dinner, setting up the sanctuary for the
High Holidays or working at the Gift and Craft Fair. As a
group they have learned through giving you also receive
and have become better members of our Synagogue
family through these experiences.
The Kadimaniks have also bonded as a group.
Many of the twelve kids who attended Fall Convention
experienced for the first time spending an entire weekend
with other Jewish kids from around our Sub Region. They
learned about the Mitzvah of laying Tefillin with our Build
a Pair event. The Kadimaniks stepped up to serve at the
annual Sukkot Congregational Dinner, had fun playing
Laser tag and running the smoothie booth at the Purim
carnival. May 1, Kadima will come together with USY and
alumni to lead Friday night service and Ask the Rabbi.
Halutzim began the year with a pool party and
will end the year at the Family Lag Ba’Omer picnic and
field day May 12, 2009 at 4:45.
This summer I will be busy planning great
programs and events for next year as well as
transforming the youth lounge. Please stop by to see the
changes or just to say hi!
B’Shalom

The USY board represented CBI at the
community Earth Day Celebration in Clearwater. Our
chapter was recognized at the event for our recycling
program. It was really cool to join groups from
around the community to celebrate Earth Day. Tikum
Olam has always been an important Jewish value.
SPUSY sent 11 delegates to HaNegev Regional
convention in Jacksonville. It was an amazing time
being with friends from around our region. The
theme of the convention was cults and was carried
out throughout the convention.
I can hardly believe the year is winding down.
We will hold our elections May 2 at our closing
program.
REQUEST FROM THE RABBI
Please keep me informed of significant events in your family life. It is my desire to be of help and service to you in times of special need.
It is especially important that I know of those in the hospital, assisted living or nursing homes, so that they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shabbat Services.

VISITING THE SICK One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim – visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy at Congregation B’nai Israel takes very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with the Rabbi. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Anita Helfand (727-381-4900) so that as clergy and as a synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

BOOK REVIEW
THE SISTINE SECRETS
Michelangelo’s Forbidden Messages in the Heart of the Vatican Authors: Rabbi Benjamin Blech and Roy Dolling
Every year millions of people come to see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling,
one of the largest fresco paintings on earth in the holiest of Christianity’s chapels. Yet
there is not one single Christian in this vast magnificent work. Michelangelo performed an
immense and ingenious act of concealment within the Sistine Chapel to convey a number
of messages, veiled but very strong and direct, that preach reconciliation between reason
and faith, between the Jewish Bible and the New Testament, and between Christian and
Jew.
This book tells the fascinating story of Michelangelo, educated by Lorenzo d’Medici in
Florence, where he came into contact with the most brilliant minds of the day. Already
recognized as a genius, he gained a deep knowledge of the Bible, the teachings of the
Torah, the Kabbalah, the Talmud and the Midrash. This background helps to understand
Michelangelo, his messages and their meaning. Much of it can be better seen and
understood today after a perfect cleaning of the frescos which had been obscured by
centuries of thick smoke, dust and misguided attempts at preservation.
Most observers viewing the frescos never realize that the Sistine is a full size copy
of the Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. They would surely be amazed to
discover that Michelangelo himself embedded secret messages inside the chapel that struck at the heart of the papacy.
There is significance in every element of the frescos, which are not only faithful to the Hebrew Bible, but even more so
to the Kabbalah, the Jewish doctrine of mystical and esoteric character. He evaded papal censorship of his opinionated
work with his private agenda. Michelangelo’s genius was in allowing the viewer to see a great deal in order not to see
what is best left secret. The authors feel he put in so many trees that one cannot easily see the forest.
In reading this book, you will enjoy making the discovery of Michelangelo’s messages for yourself with
guidelines from the authors. The finally discovered and fully explained hidden messages have changed forever the way
to view and understand the work of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.

SHABBAT GAMES FOR THE KIDS..
Look what's new for you! CBI will now have a Shabbat Game Cart located in the alcove of the Social Hall each Shabbat morning. The game cart will have games for children to play
while their parents enjoy the Kiddush. PARENTS! Please assist your child in cleaning up before leaving.
SHABBAT MORNING CHILDCARE
On some Shabbatot we have no children in the childcare program. We are instituting a new procedure. If you would like to request childcare for your preschoolers for Shabbat morning, please call the synagogue office by Wednesday prior to the Shabbat, so we can make the necessary arrangements.
A s the Fund Raising VP,
I am charged with raising funds for the shul. I am often asking for money. This month I am asking for your time. If you have some time, any time, CBI could use your talents. In an economic climate where it is harder for people to pull out their checkbook and make a donation of money, consider a donation of time!! Even if you feel you have no money or time to give, you can help CBI by online shopping, shopping at GFS with a Fun Funds card and participating in the CBI scrip program!!!!! Pick one or 2 retailers that you frequent and purchase a scrip card(s). Next time you shop or dine or fill up your car there, it will feel good since you will have already paid and raised money for CBI. Learning about Scrip seems complicated at first but it is easy once you get the hang of it. Please contact either myself or JayKauffman ([email protected]) and we would be glad to help you place your first order.

MINYANAIRES ARE NEEDED! Who Knows Ten?
CBI is always proud to say that we are the only shul on the West Coast of Florida that has a twice-daily minyan. We are being proactive in order to ensure the viability of the minyan. This is of utmost importance to those who are saying kaddish which cannot be said it there is not a
minyan present. It is very upsetting when someone who has made the effort to come is not able to say kaddish. In order to avoid this occurrence, we have captains who will be in charge of a particular morning or evening and will not recruit congregants to come on the designated day and time. If you are willing to participate in this program either as a captain or as a “minyanaire”, please contact Irma Mayer at 392-2657.

Do We Have Your E-Mail Address?
B’nai Israel has established an e-mail group that is a quicker and more cost-effective way to communicate with our members. We e-mail to our members
Bereavement notices as well as a weekly update with service schedule
and program information. Our e-mail list is used for synagogue
purposes only and the e-mail messages are sent via blind copy so that no one
else sees your address. If you don’t have e-mail yet, here is a
good reason to get it! Please sign up today by sending an e-mail to Pam Askin the synagogue
office at [email protected]. In the subject line, please write “sign me up”.
Be sure to include your name in the body of the e-mail.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

RITUAL COMMITTEE AMENDS POLICY
ON „COUPLES ALIYOT‟ --AND WOMEN‟S WEARING OF
TALLEISIM
A t a recent meeting, the Ritual Committee of
Congregation B’nai Israel decided to alter its existing policy of limiting speaking aliyot by couples during Shabbat and Yom Tov services. Previously, married couples could only be called to the Torah together during special observances, such as an Aufruf, the naming of a child, wedding anniversary or a Bar/Bat
Mitzvah of a child.
Under the revised policy, married couples will be able to accept aliyot at Shabbat and Yom Tov services together as a couple upon request.
As a corollary of the revised policy, the Committee has decided to require all who are honored with a speaking aliyah, women as well as men, to wear a tallit when called to the Torah. This requirement will be in effect whether a woman performs an aliyah individually or jointly with her husband. Our ushers will be happy to provide talleisim and to assist in facilitating participation in aliyot.
Questions about these policies, as well as any matters related to our shul’s ritual practices, may be directed to Morry Bornstein, Ritual Committee Chair, at 397-9955, or via email at [email protected]. We look forward to your continued involvement in the ritual life of our shul.
THE OFFICIAL WORD
Cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other e lec t ron ic dev ices should not be used anywhere in the building or on the grounds on Shabbat and holidays. In addition, cell phones should be turned off d u r i n g f u n e r a l s , weddings, baby naming ceremonies and britot and during classes.
Join us in wishing Mazal Tov! to members celebrating their birthdays, anniversaries and B’nai Mitzvah. Your good
wishes can be part of their memories, while at the same time, supporting B’nai Israel’s commitment to help our
schools, youth groups and Synagogue through your donations to our Mitzvah Fund.

TO BOOK MEETING ROOMS If you are having a
meeting or event, you must reserve a room with
Pam Askin as soon as possible to schedule it on
the Synagogue calendar to make sure there is a room
available, all facilities information is known, and a custodian
knows to open and close the building at the proper time. Also, if you need to cancel a
meeting or a room reservation, please
notify the synagogue office as well.
PLEASE TELL THE RABBI If you know of anyone who is ill
or hospitalized and would
appreciate a call or visit from Rabbi Luski, please call
the synagogue office. You will do a good mitzvah
especially since several hospitals in our area, due to
security procedures and protection of patient’s privacy
rights, will not release the names of Jewish patients.

Our annual Graduation and Summer Sendoff Shabbat is Saturday, May 16, 2009. services and in the Congregation Bulletin, please RSVP their attendance and call or e-mail the Synagogue office ([email protected] and share their graduation information with us. For high school graduates, please provide us the high school, their degree, and the college or other future plans. For college and graduate degrees, please provide their school, their degree and major and their future plans.
Summer sendoff students will also be recognized
during services. Please inform the office of their attendance.
We also invite you to make a donation in honor of your

DONATION NOTES…
Donations may be made by mailing
or bringing in a note to the
synagogue office detailing the
name of the fund, the reason for
the donation, to whom it should go
and the donor’s name, along with
a check made out to Congregation
B’nai Israel. Please note that if the
recipient is not a member, please
include the address. It would be greatly appreciated if
checks for donations were separate from other checks
to the congregation. The CBI accountant would be most
appreciative.
For Sisterhood and Men’s Club dues and donations,
please make checks payable to them. This makes record
keeping easier.
OFFICE DROP BOX
As a reminder that there is a Secured Drop Box available at
the shul and at your service whenever you are in the
building. It is located outside of the Synagogue office across from the Judaica Shop. You can drop off your messages, contributions, etc.
when coming to minyan, meetings, social events, and classes or when bringing children to school. It is an easy way to communicate within the congregational
family. Drop-in sometime!
