From the Rabbi

The Torah, the traditions and teachings of our people, mold our character, guide our paths and shape our behavior in a most distinguished manner. Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan explained in The Meaning of God in Modern Jewish Religion: “The unique

element in the Jewish religion consisted in the conscious recognition that the chief function of the belief in God was to affirm and fortify the moral law. The outstanding characteristic of the Jewish religion is its conscious emphasis upon the teaching that the moral law is the principal manifestation of God in the world.” The truth is that if we sincerely believe as Jews and we honestly identify as Jews, then we must try with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our might to do what is right and proper. In all situations, in the face of all temptations in private, and in public, we must be sincere and honest. It is not easy to be a Jew. In fact, it never has been. It is a constant effort. But at the same time we must realize that in those moments when we behave as Jews, we find our deepest needs satisfied and our lives fulfilled.

As we celebrate Congregation B’nai Israel’s 90th Anniversary, we are proud to offer Conservative Judaism to our community of Jews to enjoy, learn, grow and live. Join us on Shabbat February 8 & 9 as we celebrate on Friday evening and Saturday morning. We will acknowledge your years of devoted membership to our Synagogue family, by declaring our pride in how many decades we have been a part of our CBI family. On Sunday February 10, we will again celebrate with the 90th Anniversary Gala. We have much to be proud of as we look forward to a bright and joyous future. As Moses Montefiore said, “Judaism is the belief that all life should be sanctified and transfigured. Man is to humanize himself by conscious adherence to the moral law.” As a CBI family may we rise to the challenge of promoting the excitement of Conservative Judaism to our community. Mazal tov to us all!!

Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

describing Haman’s plot. Here is the complete translation of the Purim Al Hanissim from our Siddur Sim Shalom: In the days of Mordecai and Esther, in Shushan, the capital of Persia, the wicked Haman rose up against all Jews and plotted their destruction. In a single day, the thirteenth of Adar, the twelfth month of the year, Haman planned to annihilate all Jews, young and old, and to permit the plunder of their property. You, in great mercy, thwarted his designs, frustrated his plot, and visited upon him the evil he planned to bring on others. Haman, together with his sons, was put to death on the gallows he had made for Mordecai.

Hag Purim Sameah! Cantor Jonathan Schultz

Once again, it’s Purim time! One of the most fun holidays, a time for merriment, joy and celebration. We read the Megillah in an atmosphere of unbridled happiness. We share Mishloah Manot (gifts of food) and we offer

Matanot la’Evyonim (special tzedakah for the needy). And we rejoice at a Seudat Purim (festive meal) filled with good food, good drink, family, and friends. One custom at the Seudah is to offer a Purim Kiddush. There are more than a few versions of a Purim Kiddush floating around, some of which spoof the Shabbat or Festival Kiddush, and some of which incorporate liturgical phrases from throughout the year. I have one version that I plan to share with you electronically, as there is not enough space to include it here. Aside from the reading of the Megillah, the main liturgical feature of Purim is the addition of “Al Hanissim” in the Amidah, as we had on Hanukkah. Like the Hanukkah version of “Al Hanissim,” the Purim version recounts briefly the Jews’ military victory against an enemy, and also praises God for standing by us in that time of great distress. The Purim version also quotes directly from the Book of Esther in

The first few months of my presidency are behind me. I want to share a few things that have happened during that time: We welcomed Michael Grossman to our Kehilla and our community. Our ISH group continues to grow and was

awarded a grant from USCJ. The importance of this demographic is recognized.

We had new sinks installed and some improvements made to the Preschool classrooms.

We hosted another successful Gift and Craft Show. We hosted our annual Hanukka Menorah lighting and

collaborated with the JCC Suncoast to bring The LeeVees concert to this community. Mayor Foster joined us to recognize CBI’s history in this community.

We hired Kesef Accounting to provide us with high quality, secure bookkeeping services. Their expertise in synagogue finances and Chaverware software will be assets to us.

We have a new, user friendly website. We are able to take online secure credit card payments and

donations. Our E News is much improved in layout and content.

From the President We introduced The Minyanaire Program and honored our

Minyanaires. Our PRTT students performed Peter Pan totally in Hebrew.

They were amazing and were so capably trained by our PRTT staff.

We have renamed and reorganized our MITZVAH GELT (formerly known as SCRIP) program. IT is easier than ever to sign up online and order many vendor cards directly from your home computer and reload cards purchased through our program.

We offer many opportunities to enhance learning at all knowledge levels.

We have a new phone system, faster internet and significant cost savings.

We make it very easy to buy trees in Israel to support JNF by clicking a link on our homepage and receive a percentage of every purchase.

I share these accomplishments to highlight the successes

and strengths of CBI. I am honored to be CBI’s President and

work alongside many dedicated professional staff and

volunteers who make these things happen. As we begin

CBI’s next 90 years, get involved and leave your mark on CB’s

history.

HEVRA KADISHA TO

BE HONORED The Hevra Kadisha Burial Society of Congregation B’nai Israel will be honored at a dinner on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. If you are a member of the Hevra Kadisha, please join us for minyan at 6:30 pm followed by our annual dinner at 6:45 pm Hevra Kadisha is a voluntary committee of men and women who serve the needs of an individual after death. This priceless act of kindness is considered one of the greatest mitzvot to be performed. One who serves on this committee is considered to be a partner with heaven in providing dignity to another Jew when that Jew and his/her family are totally dependent upon the community. The Ritual Committee looks forward to providing appropriate kavod to this very special group of people at B’nai Israel. For more information about participation, please contact Joel Goetz and Ellen Goetz, Chairpersons of the Hevra Kadisha.

NEVER FORGET TO LIE Local Jewish Community Members featured in critically-acclaimed film commemorating the 70th Anniversary the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The newly released film ”Never Forget to Lie” by director Marian Marzynski, addresses the wartime childhood experiences of children holocaust survivors, including Edward and Halina Herman of St. Petersburg, FL. The film will be shown at the Bayfront Muvico Theater in St Petersburg on February 11 at 7:30 pm Focusing on children holocaust survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto, the film explores childhood feelings about Poland, the Catholic Church, and the ramifications of identities forged under circumstances where survival began with the directive to the children “Never Forget to Lie”. The film will be broadcast on PBS Frontline on April 30, 2013 after a series of theater screenings in US cities including New York, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami as well as in various European capital cities. Director Marian Marzynski, was born in Poland and survived the Holocaust as a Jewish child hidden by Christians. He has been making documentary films for over 50 years, initially in Poland, where during the '60s he was one of the pioneers of "cinema verite". For the last 30 years Marzynski has worked in the United States. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1982 and won two Emmy Awards for his documentaries. He is a major contributor to such PBS series as The American Experience, NOVA and Frontline. Several of his previous films have dealt with the subject of the Holocaust. These include Return to Poland (1982), and Jewish Mother (1984). The three hour long film Shtetl (1996), became the most important work of his career. In 2005 he produced a film for Frontline, called A Jew Amongst the Germans---the story of building a

memorial in Berlin to the murdered Jews of Europe.

Campus Challenges for the Jewish Student We call on all high school and college students, parents, and the community to an informative session on dealing with Jewish campus challenges. Mark you calendars for 7:00 pm, Wednesday, February 13, at CBI. The JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) presents Rabbi Ed Rosenthal and student panel on the topic “I Speak Fluent Israel: Young Adult Advocacy”. This subject is the second in a four-part lecture series “Israel: Perception vs Reality” that is being held on both sides of the Bay during February (the complete schedule appears in this Review). Rabbi Rosenthal is the Executive Director/Campus Rabbi of the Hillels of the Florida Suncoast. He serves five campuses in St Petersburg, Sarasota, and Tampa. His energy and rapport with students bring tremendous insight to this critical issue.

to gather for prayer each morning and evening. Daily

communal prayer is a basic tenet of Judaism, and at CBI we

are committed to fulfilling this mitzvah and providing this

opportunity to our membership and our community.

In order to recite certain prayers, including Mourner’s

Kaddish, ten adult Jews need to be present at the service.

Please consider attending when you can to enable us to

“make a minyan.” Morning service time is 7:45 a.m. on

not required to be counted in the minyan. All prayers are

provided in English translation. Additionally, Minyanaires are

present at services to guide you through the service or assist

you in any other way.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

“Mi-sheniknas Adar marbim be-simhah……….with the start of

the month Adar we

greatly increase joy.”

It is wonderful to be a part of a holiday such as

Purim in which we can have fun, dance and

be noisy! Our graduates who become members of

the CBI Golden Kipah Honor Society participate in

the reading of the Megillah and our current

students will present their own “Purim Shpiel.”

The lessons of Purim are that tyrants and fanatics

can be defeated and that evil cannot forever exist.

We cannot stress the importance of this historical

significance as it parallels even today.

Customs of Purim are sending gifts of food and money to the

poor, exchanging gifts and enjoying feasts and masquerades.

In Israel there are public parades with floats and costumes.

Please join us for the Purim celebration on Saturday night,

February 23rd at 6:45 PM and on Sunday morning at noon at

Temple Beth El, the festivities continue with our Purim Shpiel

and Carnival. Hag Sameah!

Mazal Tov to our students Nicholas Hitzel and Corey Sokolov

and their families for their B’nai Mitzvah!

Shalom,

Ilana Dayan, Education Director

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

Last month, Pauline Rivkind Preschool celebrated Tu B’Shevat. This is a holiday of nature, the New Year of the Trees. It reminds us that we are all children of the Garden of Eden. Our children at PRPS concentrated not only on the New Year of the Trees, but also how to preserve what the trees have to offer us. We will be upgrading our recycling program. We learned about the resources that are renewable and those that are not. We planted two trees, a hibiscus by the preschool doors and an oak next to the bench. We continue nourishing our vegetable garden with new vegetables, preparing for a Passover harvest! MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Sunday, March 3, 2013 will be the Silent Auction/Pasta Dinner sponsored by the Preschool. EVERYONE is invited to attend. Please respond to the flyer include in this month’s bulletin and contact Bonnie Halprin for more information or to make a donation for the Silent Auction.

B’shalom!

Bonnie Halprin, Preschool Director

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Junior Congregation will meet on the following Saturdays in February at 10:00 a.m.: February 2, 9 and 23. This is a great time for children to pray with their fellow students.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT After a much needed break the kids returned to school in January and activities at CBI. Kadimaniks had a blast last month at the Tampa Airport. They teamed up for a scavenger hunt around the airport before enjoying an airfield tour! The second semester of Hebrew High began January 30th and was kicked off with Dine and Dash sponsored by Jackie Wertel and the Benjamin Family. The next Dine and Dash will take place February 27. We thank the Kunins and Sokolov Families for their sponsorship. A highlight of every year is Yom Disney when USYers and Kadimaniks from around the southeast spend a day at a Disney theme park. This year, February 17th, nearly 1,000 kids will enjoy a fun filled day at Disney’s Islands of Adventure! What is it that makes Yom Disney so unique, so vastly different from any other time you have visited a Disney park? The answer is simple. Wherever you go you see kids with Kippot and wearing chapter tee shirts. There is a connection that is palpable, even if you do not know the person you just passed. We are all Jewish! We come from different communities but share the same traditions and rich heritage and whether it is conscious subconscious ,it feels good. Please join us Shabbat evening February 8th for USY Alumni Shabbat. The Scholarship Committee will meet Wednesday, February 20. Applications for Summer Programs Scholarships must be in by February 13 in order to be considered for a scholarship.

In October and November of 2012, the A-Team organized workshops for writing letters-to-the-editor. CBI’s Dr Mark Walters, a professor in USF’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, facilitated the sessions. In the first workshop, Mark exhibited examples of newspaper content, eg, op-ed pieces, news articles, other letters that had received responses. He provided the responses as examples of what constitutes an effective letter to the editor. Some letters used mocking humor, others presented a moral argument, others provided missing information …, etc. To improve the chance of being accepted by the newspaper, the following guidelines are useful: 1. Know why you’re writing the letter

That is, to what are you objecting? Someone's personal opinion, someone's bias, or factual inaccuracies or omissions?

2. Know how to write the letter

• Follow submission instructions. • Respond quickly. Don’t wait two or three days. • Be pithy, concise, and maybe even clever. Write and rewrite.

Limit to three paragraphs:

• Introduce the problem and summarize your objection. • Support your point of view with evidence, logical argument,

informed opinion, or personal story. Earn the right in the second paragraph.

• End with a bang (“kicker”), not a whimper. 3. Make a difference one letter at a time By the end of the session, it was realized that newspaper readership was down across all age groups of the attendees. In the second workshop, Mark provided a recent controversial op-ed piece by Bill Maxwell. The piece was lengthy; everyone in the class found something different with which to take issue. It was quickly determined that any single letter to the editor would have to be so limited that significant issues would go unmentioned. This provided the segue to a discussion that the most appropriate immediate response should be via social media, ie, Facebook, Twitter, and sometimes You Tube. It was agreed that the next step in the process of responding to the media (not only newspapers) would involve implementing methods using powerful social media. I take this opportunity to invite you to participate in “going digital”. Please let me know of your interest and, especially experience, so that I may contact you when discussions begin.

CBI-HADASSAH BOOK CLUB

Meets on Wednesday, February 20th at 10:00 am in the Buns Family Library to discuss Dream by Harry Bernstein.

BOOK REVIEW Triangle: The Fire that Changed America, by David Won Drehle.

People are trapped in a high-rise building in New York City. Unable to escape, many resort to jumping out the window to certain death below. Another 9/11 story? No, this disaster took place in 1911 and, similar to what happened 90 years later, its effects had wide-ranging consequences. In this engrossing work Washington Post journalist David Von Drehle puts the Triangle Waist Co. fire that killed 146 workers on a Saturday afternoon into its historical perspective. He paints a vivid picture of the life of the immigrants, mostly Jews from Eastern Europe and Russia who came to “The Golden Land, “ where they worked an average of 84 hours/week for low pay, “hunched over their work side by side and head to head like Oliver Twist and his fellow foundlings at their gruel.” Just before quitting time on March 25, 1911, a fire engulfed the building’s upper floors. Using statements from survivors, Von Drehle describes the minute-by-minute horror involved. As with any story of this type, who lived and who died often depended on a host of otherwise innocuous factors. The public was outraged and demanded someone be held accountable. The factory owners were put on trial, based on allegations that they had kept the doors of the factory locked to prevent employee theft. Not only were they acquitted, they received “more than four hundred dollars per dead worker” from their insurance company. But despite this setback, the cause for which so many of perished workers fought won out in the end. New York’s Democratic Party became the party of the worker. In this wake, Franklin Roosevelt was elected, and the federal government would never be the same. In addition to being an excellent retelling of events, Triangle succeeds in personalizing the victims: in death, these “typical” people“ were a catalyst for the forces of change: the drive for women’s (and other civil) rights, the rise of unions, and the use of activist government to address social problems.

FAMILY PROGRAMS

As parents we cherish special moments with our children and are especially pleased when they can be “teaching moments”. Over the next few months CBI programming will provided you with many opportunities for just that. Sunday morning, February 3rd, the Mitzvah Men’s Club will join communities throughout the country for the annual World Wide Wrap. If you have never put on tefillin this is a chance to learn, alongside your children, how to participate in this mitzvah. Boys and girls preparing for Bar or Bat Mitzvah can share this experience with their Mom or Dad. Come at 8:30 am for individualized instruction. Begin now talking to your children about Purim. The story of Purim and its lessons are pertinent to this day. Get your children excited about making a gragger for CBIs most creative contest or about what costume they will wear so they are ready Saturday evening, February 23rd, for Purim Megilla reading and Costume Parade! Of course another highlight is the Purim Carnival, Sunday February 24th at TBE from 12:00 until 2:30 pm. CBI and TBE will once again join together for fun filled day!

Each and every week we have the chance to create Shabbat memories. Friday evening, March 8th, join us for Kabbalat Shabbat at 6:00 pm followed by “Got Shabbat?” Dinner. I hope you will choose to join us for one or all of these wonderful programs!

THE STORY OF PURIM Purim, one of the merriest of Jewish holidays, is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar and commemorates the deliverance of the Jews of Persia from the wicked anti-semite Haman. The Book of Esther or “Megilla” is read each Purim and tells the dramatic story of Esther, Mordechai and King Ahasuerus. Ahasuerus was the King of Persia about 2300 years ago that chose Esther as his Queen. At about the same time, he appoints Haman as his Vizier. The King is unaware that his Queen is Jewish and of Haman’s hatred of the Jews. Through a twisting series of events, Haman gets the King to agree to the annihilation of all the Jews in the Kingdom. The date for the massacre is chosen through the casting of lots and falls on the 14th of Adar. The word “Purim” comes from the Persian word for “lots”. When learning of this plot, Esther makes a bold move and goes before the King to plead for her life and the life of her people. Ahasuerus rescinds his order of annihilation and hangs Haman instead. And so, the 14th of Adar became the day of deliverance for the Jewish people and in thankfulness, the day was proclaimed as a day of rejoicing. It is to be celebrated with “feting and gladness and the sending of gifts one to another, and presents to the poor.”

HAPPY PURIM Purim Observances

The Fast of Esther – Ta’anit Esther – We fast the day before Purim in commemoration of the fast by the Jews in Persia, when Esther went before the king unsummoned.

Megilla Reading – The Megilla is chanted in Synagogue on the evening and morning of Purim. Whenever the name of Haman is mentioned, we use “graggers” or noisemakers to drown out the name.

Purim Masquerading – masquerading is very popular and adds to the fund of the day. Masquerade parades for children and even some adults are often part of Synagogue celebrations.

Sending Shalach Manot – We are instructed in the Book of Esther to send gifts to “one to another”. These traditionally consist of at least two different foods or drink, fruit, candy and/or wine.

Matanot L’evyonim – It is customary to give “presents to the poor” on Purim. This can also be done by giving money to Jewish charities.

Purim Seudah – A special meal with plenty of food and drink ends this festive holiday.
