From the Rabbi gratitude and expressing appreciation.

There is a well known legend that underscores this tendency in human beings. Two angels were each given a basket and sent to earth to gather up the prayers that were being offered that day. One was to collect only petitions. The other was to gather up the prayers of thanksgiving. When they returned, the angel bearing the requests was carrying a basket filled to overflowing. The other angel was depressed for his basket was all but empty.

There is no doubt that our gripes and grumblings are louder than our expressions of appreciation. We complain more often than we experience contentment. We are certainly more aware of what we lack and need, than our focus on what we have.

Thanksgiving Day is a call to remedy this emotional imbalance in our perception of the world and our own lives. The meal, the sharing, that gathering together of family and friends can and must make us stand back and realize how grateful we should be for the people in our lives, the successes of our lives and for the simple fact that we are here to enjoy life.

Thanksgiving Day resonates with Jewish values, even if the historical background is not from our own history. The obligation to cultivate a lively sense of appreciation for the manifold blessings a gracious God bestows on

us runs like a golden thread throughout the fabric of our Jewish tradition. According to religious mandate we are obligated to recite “one hundred blessings” every day as we experience God’s bounty. So basic was this sense of appreciation that the Rabbis of old declared: “In time to come, all the offerings will be abolished except the thanks-offering; all the prayers will be abolished except the prayers of thanksgiving.”

At first thought, it appears easy to cultivate the art of giving thanks. From our earliest days we are taught good manners, among them responding “thank you” to express our gratitude when someone was nice to us. What would be more natural than extending this lesson into our adult life, and occasionally pausing to be grateful for the blessings of our lives and for life itself. And yet as we move from day to day, we cannot fail to note the difficulty that most of us have in feeling

synagogue. There are accounts of musical instruments appearing in synagogues 300 years ago.

It is important to know that musical instruments are not prohibited on Shabbat or Yom Tov. So, then why did it take so long to reintroduce them and why does it evoke an emotional reaction in many observant and non observant Jews. To answer that I will quote some of the most brilliant Rabbis I know. “I have no idea”.

What I do know is that there is really no reason not to play a musical instrument on Shabbat. Now repairing one on Shabbat is a different story. If the instrument breaks…then you can’t repair it on Shabbat. That is why I always have a 2nd guitar on hand (as backup). If a string breaks on that one, we’re back to a cappella. So the next time that we have Musical Instrument Shabbat, please come check it out, it adds a special joy to the service.

So, even though it appears that way, I assure you I am neither intoxicated nor otherwise impaired when I write my columns. So, the rest of my October column is below.

This did not include the trope of the Torah and Haftarah chanting, nor did it include the Psalmody, plaintive way of chanting the Psalms. It was simply anything that resembled the jubilant music created for the Temple service.

This music ban lasted for almost 700 years (give or take a couple of hundred). The people kept asking for music during services, any service. They began to focus on the Wedding Service since it was so joyful. Finally, the Rabbis relented, but only with a give and take. They would allow singing back into the Wedding Service, but the remembrance of the destruction of the Temple had to be there also. Hence, we have the breaking of the glass at the end of the ceremony.

It took almost another 700-800 years (around 500 years ago) before instruments began to find their way into the

PROFILE IN LEADERSHIP SERIES Introducing: Laurie Slomka Reiskind CBI Member since 1978-1983 and 1993-2009 Question 1: Please define yourself.

I am a wife to Marc, mother to Elissa and Jeremy, daughter to Sandy and Mike and sister of Ira and Howie. In my professional career, I was an occupational therapist specializing in the rehab of people with spinal cord injuries. As I have been fortunate enough to be able to choose not to work outside the home while raising my kids- they are my first priority and then giving back to my community through volunteer work is second. I am also a sports fanatic. Question 2: What’s your role at CBI? I am the Fundraising Vice President and this is my second term in that job. I have been on the Executive Committee 4 years and the Board for at least the previous 11 years. Question 3: What is your favorite book or movie or music on your ipod? Why? My favorite movie is either Brian's Song or the made for TV movie, Miracle on Ice, about the 1980 Olympic hockey team. I don’t own an iPod. Question 4: What is your favorite Jewish holiday? Why? Shabbat! I love blessing my kids and am amazed to think I used to have to chase Jeremy to place my hand on his head. Now I

As Thanksgiving approaches, please remember that many people are not as fortunate as most of us. The staff at Gulfcoast Jewish Family Services was very grateful for the truck load of food we collected on Kol Nidre for Operation Isaiah. Remember we are a drop off point for food all year long. Keep the food coming! I would like to extend my warmest wishes to each of our members and their families for a very Happy Thanksgiving!

have to raise my arm high to put my hand on my kid’s heads. Also, after years of my kids asking, I finally learned how to make my own challah (thanks to Shelley Lynn and a CBI adult education program) and now bake challah. Question 5: What values do you try to emulate and pass on? Honesty, respect, tolerance and tzedekah are what immediately come to mind Question 6: Who has made the biggest impact on your Jewish life? Probably my parents for giving me the foundation that Judaism, tzedekah and community service are important. Then, my husband and kids for supporting me as I give back. Also my kids for being the catalyst for me doing more Jewish rituals as a mom than I did as a kid. It is hard to say no when your kids want to be more Jewish. Question 7: Which is your favorite Jewish ritual to practice? Blessing my kids on Shabbat and getting together with friends and families on holidays. Question 8: When do you most feel Jewish? I have felt pretty awesome the few times I have been one of 10 to make a minyan. Question 9: What is your most memorable moment at CBI? The dedication of the new building- watching my parents carry the Torahs into the new sanctuary and place them in the new ark for the first time. The Bat and Bar Mitzvah of my children; during Jeremy’s Bar Mitzvah, he read a lot of Torah and presented himself so well. Elissa received her Golden Kippah indicating an ongoing commitment to reading Torah and Judaism; my brother Howie read Torah and presented Elissa with her Golden Kippah as he was the first recipient. To me, that is a moment marking my family's long history with CBI and showing Jewish continuity. Question 10: What motivated you to say YES to CBI? I am passionate about giving back to the community. I learned the importance of that as a child. Question 11: What do you do to re-energize? Play maj and watch sports.

The Mitzvah Men’s Club recently held a Men’s Night Out in the CBI Sukkah, attended by over 35 men. Thanks to Herb Brasch for chairing this very successful event. Please access our web page on the www.cbi.org website for upcoming events. One of our favorite events, is our famous Latke bar which we host during the CBI Hannuka

celebration on Tuesday, December 15th. . Last year we served over 600 Latkes and offered 28+ toppings. This year we hope to break both records ! It is not too late to support the Men’s Club by joining. Our

mission is to give support to our Synagogue family any way we can.

We also help in the greater Jewish community. More important

than your dues is your participation. Our members come from

varied professions, trades, and levels of religious observance. We

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

The children and parents of all Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah will participate in the CBI Families Shabbaton on November 13th and 14th. The theme this year will be about our great Jewish tradition of giving. As a people, we have always been the leaders in helping others and protecting the glorious gifts we have been given. Our traditions

of Tikkun Olam (repairing our world), Tzedakah (charity) and Gemilut Hasadim (acts of loving kindness) have been a mighty beacon through the ages. Our students are excited about being able to share some of the lessons they have been learning--in prayer and song--with all of our CBI Families.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that interests and inspires them. Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children from the PRTT and Pinellas County Jewish Day School have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation dates in November are: 7th and 14th.

CHANGE IN ACADEMIC SETTING

We welcome children who have changed their academic settings. Please contact the PRTT office for information and a registration form.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

As always, our school year has had a start with many celebrations. With all of the holidays in September and October, we had many things to celebrate. We started with our annual Rosh Hashana Party. This year for Sukkot, we not only helped decorate our CBI Sukkah, but each class built their own Sukkah as well! It was a great experience! We spent time dancing around the sanctuary with special Torahs. The children are learning so much about their Jewish heritage. We have enhanced Shabbat with Shabbat Celebrations. Each Friday morning, the children gather in the atrium to sing Shabbat songs and listen to wonderful stories read by “Abba Cicco”. We talk about why Shabbat is special and what make it different than other days in the week. We talk about Tzedakah and different Mitzvot. We recite brachot for the candles, challah, and grape juice together. This month is when we make our big push for the Pauline Rivkind Preschool Dreidel Drawing. This is the Preschool’s number one fundraiser of the year and your support is so important to us. We already have some great prizes from M*A*C Cosmetics, Lowry Zoo, restaurants and spas, and more. You do not need to be present to win. The drawing takes place during the CBI Gift Galleria on Sunday, December 6, 2009. Complete the order form in this month’s bulletin and return it to the synagogue to get your tickets! We still have a few openings in our two year old class. Let your friends know that your synagogue has the best preschool in town!

Each Shabbat morning, children are invited to participate in Congregation Services by leading Ein Keloheinu and Aleinu at the conclusion of Musaf. Please make plans to have your child present at the assigned time. We look forward to hearing our children’s voices raised in song and prayer as they take their places along side all those who continue to make services meaningful, spiritual and successful here at CBI. YOUTH DEPARTMENT

October is my favorite month of the year. After all we celebrated Sukkot and Simchat Torah! The weather begins to change and its time to plant our fall gardens! Each year when I plant my garden I am reminded how our tradition is so rooted in nature. This brings me great comfort as we cycle through our Jewish calendar and embrace the traditions of each holiday. I watch my garden bear its flowers, fruit, and seeds then wither and die and return to nourish the soil. So is the cycle of our lives. This is Hashems’ master plan. Sharing holidays and other life cycle events with congregational family always makes them more meaningful. Our Youth Department joined their congregational family in the celebration of Sukkot with a family luncheon in the sukka and the high school students enjoyed sushi in the sukka. Kadimaniks brought the joy of Shabbat to the residents at Toby Weinman Assisted Living Residence by joining them for dinner, presenting each resident with a homemade Shabbat card and leading them in song! Halutzim spent an afternoon bowling, but with a Jewish twist! USYers shared their summer experiences at USY Shabbat and joined other chapters from around Florida at Camp Shalom for Mercaz Sub Regional convention! The bonds of friendship are strengthening and our kids are having fun and learning together! This month Kadima will have a unique experience of sleeping at the Florida Aquarium as they take part in Sleep with the Fishes! They will enjoy fellowship while learning about Kadima and the exhibits at the aquarium. Todah Rabah to the Sokolov Family for sponsoring our November Dine and Dash! Plan to join us November 21 for Havdalah on the Beach at Upham Beach! What a great experience it will be to gather as a congregational family to make Havdalah on our beautiful beaches! Please support USY’s annual Pumpkin Bread fundraiser. You may order a loaf for yourself and one to be donated to Gulf Coast Jewish Family services. If you have not involved yourselves in the many wonderful activities at CBI now is the time. The Youth Department always welcomes your involvement! The State of Israel Bonds presents: Ambassador Yehuda Avneer A veteran Israeli diplomat, who has been an invaluable advisor to five of Israel’s prime ministers, Ambassador Avneer will share his stories and insights about Israel. Wednesday evening, November 11th, 7:30 pm.

Talmud Made Easy Steve Wein continues his class covering the first tractate of the Talmud, Berahot. The class studies the Talmudic text along with selected commentaries. Hebrew, Aramaic is not necessary; classes are in English and Steve explains all. The class involves both textual analysis and lively discussion. Wednesdays, November 4th and 18th at 7:00 pm in the Library.

Torah For Seniors

Join Rabbi Luski on Tuesday mornings each month at 11 a.m. at Philip Benjamin Towers as he teaches and discusses Torah in an easy to follow fashion. 2009: November 10, December 15; 2010: January 19, February 16, March 16, April 20 & May 11.

Lunch With The Rabbi Deli lunch and Mishna Study with Rabbi Luski meets monthly on Wednesdays at noon in the CBI Atrium. BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY

Jewish Book Month is held annually in November-December, and typically, Jewish communities hold book fairs, schedule lectures by visiting authors, and plan events designed to promote Jewish culture. It is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about new and interesting books and authors. Here at CBI, Library Shabbat has become an annual tradition. On December 5th, at Saturday morning services, Jane Markowitz and Sandi Rodman will present reviews of books they have selected for the occasion. Jane will present a review of Resurrecting Hebrew, by Ilan Stavans. Sandi will discuss Righteous MEN by Sam Bourne. Please join us!

BOOK REVIEW ALL OTHER NIGHTS by author, Dara Horn

A new book by Dara Horn called All Other Nights focuses on Jewish spies during the American Civil War. The novel follows the path of young Jacob Rappaport, who because he wants to avoid an arranged marriage, joins the Union army and finds himself in another unspeakable situation. He is ordered to kill his uncle, a Loyal Confederate, who is planning to assassinate President Lincoln. He travels concealed in a barrel to his uncle’s New Orleans home and appears on the first night of Passover. The celebration of freedom from slavery is served ironically by the household slaves. Upon completion of his mission, he is sent to infiltrate Confederate female spies, one of which he falls in love and marries. The saga continues with the devastation on both sides and the introduction of Civil War politicians such as Judah Benjamin. The book brings knowledge of the place, period and people of the time. It is a truly readable historical novel.

JEWISH FEDERATION YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS Available

Every study conducted by the Council of Jewish Federations over the past 20 years has reached the same conclusion – that there is no substitute for sending one’s child on a Jewish/Israel Experience, whether to a summer program in Israel, or to a recognized Jewish summer camp or program sponsored by a nationally or internationally recognized Jewish/Israel youth organization. Covenant Fund Youth Awards In 1997, the Jewish Federation of Pinellas/Pasco Counties began offering these scholarships and created The Covenant Fund Youth Awards. In the last 12 years we have offered more than 300 scholarships. We are again welcoming applications for the 2010 Covenant Fund Youth Awards. As in the past, there are three different categories of awards: Grade School “sleep away camp” awards for youths in grades 4-8; High School Awards for those in grades nine – 12 and Covenant Fund College Awards (for accredited study only). Scholarships will be Need Based Only. The Jewish Federation will be accepting applications through Friday, January 22, 2010. Collectively, our teens have opted for a wide variety of Jewish/Israel Experience Programs including the USY Israel-Poland Pilgrimage, the Machon in Israel Program, the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), Camp Ramah, Camp Coleman, etc. The guidelines include the option of attending recognized Jewish Summer camps in North America or Jewish Experience programs such as March of the Living.
