From the Rabbi

What resolutions will we make and keep in 2013?

Every day let’s get some Jewish exercise – we can feel better and be in better shape Jewishly a year from now. Live Jewishly by increasing a new ritual mitzvah

observance each month: January – Attend one or all four JTSA Outreach lecture series January 21 – 24. February – Hear the Megillah of Esther read on Purim or read it by yourself. March – Keep a higher level of Pesah kashrut: change dishes/get rid of your hametz/ consume no hametz. April – Help celebrate Israel’s 65th Anniversary of Independence by doing something for Israel. May – Attend the study session on Erev Shavuot on Tuesday May 14 at the Tikkun Leyl Shavuot. June – Commit to attend one more religious service at our shul per week – people who attend services more live longer.

July – Commit to recite Hamotzi before each meal and at least one paragraph of Birkat Hamazon. August – Attend Selihot late night service on August 31 to prepare to usher in the New Year! September – Build a Sukkah or plan to attend a meal in the CBI Sukkah. October – Add one Shabbat observance: candles, Kiddush, services, havdala, no shopping or errands. November – Select Shaharit or Minha, or Maariv – take a few minutes to recite one service every day. December – Light the Hanukka candles every night no matter what! Let me know on December 31, 2013 how you did!!

Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

The Haftarah for Shabbat Shirah tells the story of Deborah and Barak, who led the Israelites in battle against the Canaanite army under the command of Sisera. The story is told twice: once in prose, and then again in poetry. This is a direct parallel to the crossing of the Sea of Reeds in the Torah reading, which is also told twice, first in prose and then in poetry. The two poems – Shirat ha-Yam and the Song of Deborah and Barak - are very similar in structure and layout. Both poems are long as Biblical poetry goes, and both are arranged in a “ladder” layout, with text over space and space over text. The big difference between the two stories is that in the story of Deborah, the Israelites actively fight the Canaanites in battle; in the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, it is God and God alone who defeats the Egyptians.

Shalom, Cantor Jonathan Schultz

This month marks the annual return of Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song, on January 25-26. This year, we will be celebrating Shabbat Shirah in several ways. Shabbat Shirah happens to coincide with Tu Bishvat this year, and we have

also planned the PRTT Shabbaton for that weekend. The PRTT children will participate in the Friday night service, and they will also lead a Tu Bishvat Seder during Shabbat morning Kiddush. Shabbat Shirah also marks the return of the CBI Choir, who will participate in the Musaf service on Shabbat morning. A couple days later, The Bay Area Cantorial Association (BACA) is pleased to present our annual concert on Tuesday, January 29, at 7:00 pm at Congregation Beth Am, 2030 West Fletcher Avenue, Tampa, FL 33612. On a personal note, Shabbat Shirah is also my Bar Mitzvah parashah. I invite you to join me for services on Shabbat morning, January 26, when I will chant Shirat ha-Yam and the Haftarah, in commemoration of my Bar Mitzvah.

I wish I could give more money to CBI but I just don’t have any extra. If you feel this way, please read on, there are several ways you can make money for CBI without having to write an extra check. I f you have not already been to

www.goodsearch.com and signed up to support Congregation B'nai Israel of St. Petersburg every time you do a web search or shop online, please do! Please make sure your computers at home and work as well as the computers of your friends, family and neighbors. Anyone who is willing to sign up can make $$$ for Congregation B'nai Israel. It does not just need to be our members. When you go to the website, type in Congregation B'nai Israel of St. Petersburg in the box and click on the icon to add GoodSearch to your tool bar. Follow all instructions. Search and shop now and money will go to your designated cause, CBI.

From the President

There is a lot of publicity these days encouraging people to Go Green. When we at CBI first put a recycling container on our property, people were enthusiastic and were actively bringing their newspapers to be recycled. At the beginning, we were bringing in almost $100/month. Now, we are all more environmentally aware, and now when we need “found money” more than ever our collection amounts are going down. Please do you part to recycle for our environment and our shul. Mitzvah Gelt, formerly known as SCRIP is an easy way to help CBI. Hundreds of well known vendors make gift cards available and when purchased through our program, CBI makes a percentage. Many vendors offer Scrip NOW which means you can download the “card” to your computer in a matter of minutes once you sign up for an account. More information is available on the CBI website. These 3 methods are significant ways you can help CBI toward a balanced budget. Please do your part.

Would you like to learn how to prepare a

Haftarah reading for the congregation?

Would you like to gain a greater

appreciation for the messages and

exhortations of the Hebrew prophets?

Would you like to challenge yourself by

learning a new skill and exercising your

brain?

Join CBI’s Haftarah class! You will learn how to

navigate through the trope, the ancient musical

symbols and patterns of cantillation, and you will gain

an appreciation for how its intricacies and emphases

Mitzvah Day 2013 Service to our community

Come join us on January 13, 2013 to help determine what you want to do to Pay it Forward. Each year CBI sets aside a day to help our community. What do you want to do? Come join us on Sunday morning at 9:45 for coffee and refreshments and tell us what YOU want to do! Pay it Forward Day aka Mitzvah Day is March 3, 2013. Remember this is a family event. Call the synagogue office to let us know that you will be there.

K’RIAT HA-TORAH – THE TORAH SERVICE – PART 2

Now that we know the historical basis for the public reading of the Torah, it is time to review the service. Before the Torah is removed from the ark, psalms are read praising God. On Shabbat we begin with “Ein Ka’mo-cha – None compares to you” which is taken from Psalm 86.8. We then declare “Malchootcha, Malchoot—Your Sovereignty” which we remember from the Ash’rei – Psalm 145:13. Continuing with the statement that God is our ruler in the present, past and future (from Psalms and Exodus). In our melodies we sing these in major keys which remind me of a group of trumpets. Then we switch to a minor key from “Av-Ha’rachamim—Source of Compassion.” We are pleading to God to “build the walls of Jerusalem” and ask to restore and favor Zion. It is a most appropriate time to request to God what is most important for our People. As the Ark is opened, we go to the major key again and recite a passage from Numbers 10:35” “Va-y’hi binso’ha-aron—Whenever the Ark was carried forward.” We are actually describing the manner in which the Tablets were carried at the head of the column as the children of Israel marched from place to place on their way to Canaan. Archaeology of some ancient synagogues showed that the Torah was kept in an adjoining room and then carried in when it was time to read the Torah. “Ki mi-Tzion—Torah shall come from Zion” are the words of Isaiah 2:3 stating that all nations shall come to Jerusalem to worship God and learn from His Torah. “Ba-ruch Sheh’Na’tan—Blessed in the Giver” is the final blessing thanking God who granted us this gift. We do not worship at altars of statues but praise the words of Torah that was given by God to Israel. The next part is in the Aramaic language from the Zohar (Kabbalah) and begins with “Brich Sh’may---Praised be your name.” According to the Zohar the gates of heaven open when the Torah is read so it is a personal time to ask God to, “Answer my prayers, and the prayers of all your people Israel for goodness, for life, and for peace. Amen”

CBI WOMEN’S LEAGUE

This year, Women’s League of CBI was honored with the Emerald Jewel in the Crown Award at the International Women’s League Convention in Las Vegas. Below is a synopsis of the information that I sent in order to qualify for this award. Thanks to all of our membership for making this magic. And thank you CBI for recognizing us at the convention with a beautiful virtual advertisement shown throughout the convention. Education/Programming Each year since the inception of the Women’s League Anniversary Shabbat, our Women’s League of Congregation B’nai Israel has organized a Shabbat weekend. It is a most important event on our annual calendar. This special Shabbat begins when the coordinator arranges for the women who will participate in the Friday and Saturday services. Following the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat Service, lead by the members of our Women’s League, we provide a family Shabbat dinner. We also prepare the Kiddush for Saturday and set up and serve it all. We engage many members to participate in having aliyot, reading Torah, cooking, reading prayers in Hebrew and English, and as our finale, all of our Past Presidents sing Adon Olom from the Bima. We are also very proud of our programming led by our extremely talented chair, Sheryl Sutton. Sheryl Sutton developed a group called “Glitter Girls.” Meetings have been both during the day for our non-night time drivers, as well as in the evening so as not to leave out anyone who wishes to participate. One of the program’s goals is to attract many members who might not ordinarily come out. Community Service/World Affairs Each year our Women’s League of Congregation B’nai Israel participates in our congregational Mitzvah Day by providing food to a local Food Bank and/or Shelter. This gives us an opportunity to get together to make the food, offering a social situation for our members, while performing a real mitzvah for the community. Our Torah Fund Campaign has been led for many years by Joanne Luski and Marilyn LeVine. Together they are responsible for not only meeting our quota and receiving an Award of Honor, but far surpassing it, enabling us to have a special plaque outside of the JTS library as well as buying many other necessary books and objects. Sales of our beautiful Torah Fund pins begins early in the year and never ends until the deadline for submission of the proceeds. It appears that nearly every woman in our congregation wears the newest Torah Fund pin during the year. Everyone is given an opportunity to purchase a pin at any level. We have a Torah Fund Dinner annually where we honor our Woman of Achievement. It is truly a very special evening attended by men and women who are honoring the Woman of Achievement and Torah Fund. We are proud to announce that this year’s Woman of Achievement is Millie Gelfond. Congratulations to Millie and to all of the very special women who work hard to make our Women’s League of CBI so special.

B’shalom, Alice G. Ettinger, President

The Mitzvah Men’s Club, in addition to many of our members

volunteering to help, served the Annual CBI Gift and Craft Show

by operating a lunch operation during the show. Orchestrated by

worldly raconteur and gourmand, Moishe Pipick, the event was

very successful. A todah rabah gadol to Lenny Gelfond, Alan

Gross, Jared Shenofsky, Bill Marger, Lou Bader for a job well

done. Moish’s Courtyard Café may be a new franchise concept.

Watch this space for details.

The usual Latke Lunacy prevailed when we cooked them for the

Hanukah candle lighting celebration. They’re much harder to

throw than a Frisbee, you know, especially when they’re hot.

By the time you read this, the 2013 MAN of the YEAR will have

been announced and in seclusion for enshrinement at the

fabulous Friday Shabbat dinner on Men’s Club weekend coming

up in just a couple of weeks on January 18th and 19th. This year,

we’ll also be privileged have the Kauffman family join us to

celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Kauffman Torah they

presented to CBI. It will also be Simha Shabbat on Saturday.

Where else could you find a parlay like this? A three-fer for

practically bupkis! There’s a coupon elsewhere in this bulletin,

you may call the CBI office or you can email Moish’ at

[email protected] to make your reservations. This is always a

hugely successful, fun and inspiring weekend.

On the non-comestible side of things, work is well under way for

the international WORLD WIDE WRAP on Super Bowl Sunday,

February 5th. Last year, participants around the globe totaled

over 10,000. Of course, there’s a super free breakfast and a

fascinating speaker (unless the Bucs are playing in the Super

Bowl), in which case we’ll all play marbles. If you’ve lost yours,

we have some extra loose ones, not to worry.

Jesse Rodman

Mitzvah Men’s Club President

MITZVAH MEN’S CLUB

As part of our 90th anniversary celebration, the Gala Commit-

tee will be collecting kippot from simchas that took place

at CBI over the years. If you would like to, please bring in a few kippot from

your home. Please note there is no guarantee that every

Kipah brought in will be used and we can’t guarantee that

they will all be returned. There will be a collection box set up.

They must be received by Jan 31. Todah Rabah

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

Midrash Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) Rabbah 7:20

Upon creating the first human beings, God guided them around

the Garden of Eden, saying; ‘Look at my creations! See how

beautiful and perfect they are! I created everything for you.

Make sure you don’t ruin or destroy My world. If you do, there

will be no one after you to fix it.’

We are inviting all of our Congregational

family to join us, as the students of the PRTT

lead us in a Tu B’Shevat Seder on Saturday

morning, January 26th. The children have

studied the history and rituals concerning this

Seder. This ritual is found in the text of “Pri Etz

Hadar” and involves eating 3 groupings of 10

kinds of fruits and nuts and drinking 4 cups of

wine. Each fruit is accompanied by an appropriate verse from

the Torah or Talmud. It is important to note that Tu B’Shevat is

viewed by tradition as having the same meaning for trees as

Rosh Ha-Shanah does for people. The Jewish nation have

various celebrations and Tu Bishvat must be celebrated to give

thanks for the capacity of human beings to grow food and be

mindful of repairing the world (tikkun olam). For as it says in

Deuteronomy 20:19, “For a human being is like the tree of the

field.” Please join this educational and joyous holiday with us!

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children will worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations. Junior Congregation will meet on Saturdays, January 12th and 26th at 10:00 a.m. We look forward to see your children there.

Free. Refreshments will be served. Noodle is an award-winning Israeli film directed by Ayelet

Menahemi, written by Shemi Zarhin and Ayelet Menahemi, and starring Mili Avital, Chen Baoqi, and Alon Aboutboul.

When the Chinese woman working in Israel for Miri Kalderon, an Israeli flight attendant, is suddenly deported for overstaying her work visa, her lack of Hebrew-language skills makes it impossible for her to convince the Israeli authorities that she has a young child with her. Miri, twice-widowed because of the ongoing Arab-Israeli wars, has been going through the motions of living, somehow detached from a real connection to life itself. Her decision to help reunite the child—nicknamed "Noodle"—with his mother, now back in Beijing, ends up helping her, not just the boy and his mother, in ways Miri herself could not have expected.

The following quiz , continued from last month, is adapted from one provided by MercazUSA’s Israel Advocacy Committee. A purpose of the quiz is to illustrate that many of us may not have information to refute common misconceptions. Straightforward information that doesn’t lend itself to interpretation or spin is useful for helping people come to the conclusion that some of their assumptions may be based on misinformation. The facts should be stated neutrally. Honesty, accuracy, and common sense are the keys to waging a successful campaign to improve Israel's standing in the court of public opinion. Misconception: Jerusalem was once the capital city of Palestine Q- What are the only three times in history that Jerusalem served as a capital city? A- 1) First Temple Period Jewish state, 2) Second Temple Period Jewish state, and 3) Modern state of Israel. Q- Who was the last universally recognized head of state for the region of Palestine? A- Sultan Mehmed V of the Ottoman Empire (1909-1918) Misconception: The term “Palestinian” has always referred to a unique and historically distinct Arab people. Q- Name one Israeli President or Prime Minister who is believed to have been a Palestinian. A- All had Palestinian birth certificates and passports as citizens of the Mandate of Palestine with the exception of the few who became Israeli citizens after 1948. Q- What orchestra played Hatikvah when Israel’s independence was announced? A- Palestinian Philharmonic Orchestra Q- What newspaper became the Jerusalem Post? A- Palestine Post Q- How many times is a proposed state of Palestine mentioned in any official document before the establishment of the state of Israel? A- Zero. Even the UN Partition committee suggestion referred to another proposed “Arab state” rather than a Palestinian state. Q- What does the legal basis for the formation of Syria, Jordan, Austria, Hungary, and several other Eastern Europe and Middle East nations have in common with Israel? A- They were all created by WWI victors on land of the former Ottoman or Austro-Hungarian Empires. Q- Other than being created as a Jewish homeland, in the legal documents, which created states on territory of the former Ottoman or Austro-Hungarian Empires, how is Israel different from the others? A- It is the only new country, which is identified as being “reconstituted”. Miscellaneous Questions: Q- Name two Israeli Prime Ministers who at one time lived either in Milwaukee or near Philadelphia. A- Golda Mayer and Benjamin Netanyahu Q- Of these three countries, the US, Great Britain, and Saudi Arabia, only Great Britain has what in common with Israel today? A- Both have a parliamentary form of government. Q- When is the only time in hundreds of years that it was illegal for Jews to live in what’s now commonly referred to as the “West Bank”? A- During the 19-year Jordanian occupation from 1948 to 1967. Q- What do all these countries have in common with Israel regarding specific categories of people? France/ Spain/ Germany/ India /Turkey / Denmark /Norway/ Liberia/ Poland A- They are part of a group of several dozen countries with Laws of Return, which give preferential immigration rights to specific categories of people.

BOOK REVIEW

THE LADY IN GOLD, Author: ANNE- MARIE O’CONNOR

“One dazzling painting. So many meanings………….. For Austrian modernist Gustav Klimt, his "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer" was a passionate expression of feminine beauty and desire, painted in mosaic-like patterns of flickering light. For the subject, a Viennese belle married to a Czech sugar baron, the shimmering portrait was an emblem of social status and intimate friendship with the artist, a dashing leader of the Austrian avant-garde. For Nazi looters, Klimt's 1907 painting was a trophy that depicted a Jewish woman but that could pass as an Aryan masterwork if retitled "Lady in Gold." For postwar Austrians, the fine example of Klimt's highly stylized "gold" paintings was a national treasure -- their "Mona Lisa" -- proudly displayed at the palatial Belvedere Gallery in Vienna. But for Bloch-Bauer's niece Maria Altmann, who fled the Nazis and settled in Los Angeles, the portrait was a family heirloom stolen by Hitler's henchmen that had to be returned. The story of the international legal battle over the painting, its restitution and subsequent sale to Estee Lauder heir and art collector Ronald S. Lauder for $135 million played out in the press for eight years. “ ….from a review in the Los Angeles Times This book was discussed by Dolores Diamond at CBI’s Library Shabbat on December 1st. The book is available for loan from the Buns Family Library. The actual painting, “The Lady in Gold” can be viewed at the Neue Gallerie, Ronald Lauder’s Gallery on New York City’s Upper East Side.

FAMILY PROGRAMS

As I think back on last months activities at CBI I am reminded, once again, about the amazing things we can accomplish when we work together. The month began with the annual Gift and Craft Show. The dedication of the Gift and Craft Show committee and their team of volunteers is inspiring and we thank them for a successful show.

Our Hanukka celebration this year was well attended and it was great to have so many from the Jewish community join our simcha. Thanks to the Mitzvah Men’s Club and Women’s League for providing and serving latkes and cookies and to Cantor Shultz for leading us in song. It was a delight to work with the JCC Suncoast to bring The LeeVees to CBI and was honored to have Mayor Foster light the Shamash.

Four days later we gathered on beautiful St. Pete. Beach for Havdalah and Hanukka! What a sight to see all those menorahs burning! After the event the Kadimaniks and USYers went to the Trade Wind Resort for a night of fun! The ISH group met behind the Trade

Winds and enjoyed a bonfire and schmoozed!

This month we will all take a breath and enjoy a little slower pace before another fun packed month! In February we will continue our 90th anniversary celebration with a weekend of festivities and will top of the month with Purim! We are delighted to once again join efforts with the youth group at TBE to offer a bigger and better Purim Carnival. This year it will take place at TBE, Sunday, February 24th! See you there.

B’Shalom,

Sandy Brasch

TU B’SHEVAT - New Year of Trees

Saturday, January 26, 2013, is Tu B’Shevat, the 15

th day of the month of

Shevat, when we celebrate the New Year of the Trees. Shevat is the Hebrew month when heavy rains in Israel mark the end of the winter and the beginning of spring. In the middle of the month, severe rainstorms taper off and signs of spring begin to sprout greens and flowers of every kind and color carpets the earth. Tradition tells us that just as the fate of human beings is decided on Rosh Hashana, the fate of trees is decreed and Rosh Hashana Liilanot, the New Year of the Trees.

It is customary to plant trees for Tu B’Shevat in

Israel through the Jewish National Fund. Israel relies on the Jewish National Fund and the Jewish National Fund depends on you!

Trees are $18 each. CBI is a JNF Partner and trees may be planted in our B’nai Israel Parkland.
