Personally, March was a bit of a blur, but we did manage to catch a live show at the Roxy (Dirty Fairy Tales), which was very funny and lively entertainment. If you haven’t been to see a show at the Roxy, I would highly recommend it! The other big event to hit the metropolis of Moree next month is the CWA of NSW State Conference, 6 – 9 th May. WHAT’S ON AT THE ROXY APR - MAY 2013

It was too quiet…It was too quiet…It was too quiet…It was too quiet… Apart from the gentle breeze moving through the cracks and splinters in the walls, floor and doors, it was too quiet… Too quiet for what used to happen here in the shearing shed. For several years it has stood resolute proud, so sadly now redundant, almost soulless. They’d gone out of sheep and had no use for the shed! It’s surrounds, the rails, yards, and dipping trench with vegetative overgrowth, coping as best it could from the ravages of time, weather, soil shifting, structures moving. Like the railings once useful and strong in their containment, slipping, falling, defeated, mal-aligned similar to a worn out hip in a human. Grass grows profusely hiding many of the railings, it too blowing swaying from the gentle breeze. What lies underneath the plant growth that’s quiet, seemingly secretive in existence –Ants, Spiders, Snakes, Earthworms, Witchety Grubs or White Ants…take your pick! I’m stunned by the silence of the shed. an occasional creak in the tin or wood.. otherwise silence. Cob webbing decorates indiscriminate spaces, ledges and tools left from some time ago. How long since human voices infiltrated the air, hurriedly going about the task of mustering, shearing, drenching and dipping the sheep; the reason for the shed and yards, now no voices …..nothing! The machines and wool press, stoic, upstanding, deafening in their stillness and redundancy. If machines could talk: ’I was once tired, I’m rested and refreshed, relocate and use me please! Never forgetting our ovine mates, where are the sheep? Long gone! Some still alive, others living on in the next or subsequent generations. In the past how many sheep or indeed their forebears ran, were handled through the holding pens, the boards and then the shutes to freedom minus their heavy fleeces. Now there are none of them, eerie…none of them. It was too quiet, when I noticed the lanolin stained wooden pens, the swinging doors and wool bays. The stillness of the disused shearing combs lying haphazardly in a pile where they were last used. A poignant reminder of an era that once existed, the busyness, dust, aroma of wool and sweat, animals and men. A small oil pot, just as splendid as when it was commissioned for use in lubrication of just about every nook and cranny, now it sits motionless, still useable, but motionless. It was too quiet, it could change if the sheep came back you know! Though it is quite unlikely…. Out of the corner of my eye I see a bits and pieces box with tools, joiners, lids and rags, the cardboard slowly disintegrating with visible prolific white ant activity. Soon the box will not exist. It was too quiet to hear unless you were up close, then it was insect frenzy. Life is like that, seemingly nothing happening unless you engage all you senses and really see and take in all that is, obvious or not.

Koala Management UpdateLATEST RESEARCH ON LOCAL KOALAS TO BE REVEALED AT MOREE UPDATE - FRIDAY 12th of APRIL The latest research on local koalas will be released at a Koala Update forum in Moree to be hosted by the Croppa Creek Koala Landholder Working Group and the Border Rivers-Gwydir Catchment Management Authority (CMA):

DATE: Friday 12th April TIME: 10 am – 12:30 pm VENUE: 66-68 Frome St, Moree Office Block The Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA funded the research to help fill in the knowledge gaps about koalas living in this region. Koalas in eastern Australia were recently classified as vulnerable, but until now there has been very little data about how well local David Hunter from the Moree Veterinary Hospital will discuss the regional database he was prompted to set up after taking part in the Koala Rehabilitation Workshop held in November 2012. Details are recorded about where the animals were found, their age, gender and overall state of health. Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA Implementation Officer Leah MacKinnon says the database will also provide useful information for the creation of a regional Koala Map.“To build the Koala Map we’re now looking for historic records about koalas and anecdotal information from local people. During the forum we’ll be inviting people to tell us about where koalas have been spotted recently, and where they’ve been seen in the past,” said Ms Mackinnon. “We’ll use this information to put together a more comprehensive picture of what’s happening to our koalas, and where the best patcheskoala habitat are located.” Also on the agenda will be the development of a roadside vegetation plan that will incorporaasset for the local region. The Moree Plains Shire Council is developing the plan in collaboration with the Border Rivers

Golf on demand! In February we had a visitor “Drop In” to

Croppa Creek. Although we did not get his

name, his visit was quite amazing. He was a

paraglider whom had taken off from Godfrey

Wenness property at Mount Borah, Manilla

and flown all the way to Croppa Creek. He

was part of a larger group aiming to reach

Goondiwindi and beyond in a distance

challenge. He met with some not ideal

weather over Yallaroi and was forced to fly

west and consequently lost his ‘thermal’ and

had to land. Croppa Creek Golf course was

nice open space. Each paraglider carries a

GPS tracker and can be “found” by their pick

up team with relative ease. The world record

for distance paragliding is over 340km. More

information about Godfrey’s Paragliding

School can be found at

A big thank you to Ned who is always

mowing the Croppa Creek Golf Course!
