In April 2013, prior to the incorporaon of Centenary City Plc., the then Secretary to Government of the Federaon (SGF) had wrien to the then Honorable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administraon (FCTA), requesng his assistance and guidance to make sure that all encumbrances on the Centenary City site are cleared, especially in the conduct of the enumeraon for compensaon, as well as planning for the reselement of the Original Inhabitants and other private property owners on the site.

Hitherto, the then SGF had been unequivocal in all his public comments that it was the Government’s posion that “Centenary City promoters will not move to site unl adequate compensaon have been paid to the Original Inhabitants and other private property interests, and adequate arrangement made for the reselement of the Original Inhabitants”.

In October 2013, the Minister of the FCT wrote to the SGF that the FCTA has finalized acon in the conduct of the surveys for valuaon for compensaon, and demographic and biometric exercises with a view to planning the reselement, and forwarded the details of compensaon in respect of the crops and economic trees and the built-up properes/structures within the project site. Accordingly, the compensaon required for this acquision as detailed by the FCTA amounted to N1,234,747,076.59, which has been paid in full. In addion, the sum of N54,000,000 was paid as compensaon for the relocaon of the 330 KVA Transmission lines passing through the city and N44,990,136.25 was paid to claimants in the Centenary Reselement site.

WE ARE

COMMUNITY

If you are truly interested in and proud of your local community, you need to ensure you align yourself with the people and truly care for their aspiraons.

We acknowledge the Original Inhabitants and their communies as the tradional custodians of the land we work on and pay our respects to the Elders – past and present - and the Youth – the emerging Elders. We recognize that their land was ceded to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) but not their freedom to shine.

To us a community is a group of individuals connected to each other by one or more aribute(s). The element that links them together is at the core, and is the essence of the group. Just as denoted by the root and the suffix of the word “common-unity”, a certain segment of the populaon is united by a familiar thread.

A community is a familiar thread used to bring people together to advocate and support each other in the fight to overcome those threats. As human beings, we need a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is what connects us to the many relaonships we develop.

Community is where we find comfort in difficult mes. Most people in today’s world rely on a community for praccal purposes. The necessies of life rarely come from one’s own hands, but rather from a complicated “web of mutuality,” as Marn Luther King, Jr. once phrased it. While most people need to be part of a community for life’s necessies, most people want to be part of a community because there is something indescribably lovely about being a part of a group of people who share something more substanal than geographical locaon.

A community that is safe, comfortable, and trusng can be a shining light on the hill. In my tradion, it is taught that the primary purpose of life is to awaken to the essence of who we are. Once we do so, we are invited to lovingly embrace this realizaon. The gi of community is that it offers each of us the “fire of affirmaon and support” to achieve this…even on those days when we feel no fire.

So, why is community important?C o m m u n i t y is about growing with others.Community saves us from the isolaon and alienaon we fear. It is important because in the real world, people have no c h o i c e . Community is about finding each other and a place we can call home.

We are also compelled to build community not only because we are survivors in an exisng world order but because we bring differences to a society that erases our differences. By dealing with differences we c o n f r o n t the queson of the social and e c o n o m i c foundaons of our society. By b u i l d i n g community we put some order in a fragmented world.

Appointment of Community Liaison Officers

In an effort to further strengthen the excellent relaonship between Centenary City Project and the indigenous communies within the Centenary City site as well as in the Centenary Reselement area, Centenary City FZE has hired two Community Liaison Officers (CLOs) as construcon acvity intensifies within the city.

Gade Emmanuel, a graduate of Cooperave Management from the Naonal Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has held the Chairmanship of the Youth Council of the five (5) villages within the Centenary City site for the past seven years. Due to his hard work, movaon and diligence, Centenary City Plc has maintained the most cordial relaonship with our local communies. And this is expected to connue.

Dantani Abubakar Tanko, is a g r a d u a t e of Geography and Meteorology, from the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) Minna, Niger State. He is the Youth Leader of the three (3) villages in the Centenary Reselement area. His dedicaon and hard work has resulted in an efficient resoluon of many reselement issues and has enabled Centenary City Plc to maintain a cordial relaonship with the local communies in the Reselement site.
