were performed. The most common surgeries were cataract surgeries and strabismus correction. The majority of surgeries were done on children. Strabismus (cross-eyed) is a major social stigma. Children with cross eyes are not adoptable, not given jobs and traditionally do not marry, as it is considered an “evil eye”.

There were eight stations that offered education, testing, pre/post surgery care and distribution of glasses. There were over 2,000 pairs of glasses distributed. In Nicaragua, the vast majority of people do not wear glasses and they assume that blurry vision is normal. The glasses have helped people to see and realize that clearer vision is possible.

Dr. Fasula will be returning to Nicaragua to offer more eye care. She is apart of Medical Missions International (www.mmint.org). Medical

Ministry International is an opportunity to serve Jesus Christ by providing spiritual and physical health care in this world of need. This healing ministry

strengthens village churches and offers opportunities for North American churches to strengthen their outreach programs.

Brides and their families have to be resourceful due to wedding budgets suffering from this economy and to make ends meet have to do a lot of their wedding without the help of professionals.

Here are Some tips that will hopefully help the “do it yourself bride” navigate the proverbial “church lady” and relieve

stress and help out your with your wedding dollars.

Churches have rules as to where and how you put all those beautiful bows on the pews and doors, so before you buy the pew bow mounts at the craft store know the rules. Options are available you can tie them on or use the hooks that have adhesive on the back

you will have to remove all of his after your wedding but you can ask a friend or relative to do this for you.

Many churches don’t allow rice, bird seed, or confetti to be thrown on the bride and groom as they leave the church how about releasing birds, butterflies, or just having bubbles be creative their are options.

Candles can also be a concern don’t rent anything with out checking for placement and if they allow candles. There are flameless candles but they add expense so figure that into your budget.

Finally what to do with the flowers after the ceremony they can be brought to the reception by your florist

or family member or you can donate them to the church but if you have containers you have to return to your florist or rental place don’t leave those behind or you could be responsible for the cost.

Remember ask questions ahead of time so your day is a “Treasured Event”.

This article was submitted and written by Kathryn Lee of

Treasured Events Floral Designs (www.treasuredeventswny.com). Kathryn can be reached at (716) 439-0369 or [email protected] for further questions, comments or assistance with floral arrangements.

Jesus and Me (J.AM.)Emmanuel United Methodist Church

iJesus and Me (J.AM.) began in the mid-80’s as childcare for church Bible Study each Wednesday night. Then in the late 80’s, we began to invite neighborhood children and J.AM. began as a ministry for children.

In 1190, the name was changed to “Adventure Club” with weekly attendance of over 100 children. The children were divided into two groups, the K-2nd graders were called rainbows and grades 3-5 were called “Adventure Kids”. From then until now, with ideas obtained from the Cornell Extension, we break into small groups and engage the older kids in seven week project groups

such as: bicycle repair, chimes, wood, leather, crafts, games, cooking sign language, story-telling, puppets, drama, Scrapbooking and more. The purpose of Project Groups is to develop one-to-one relationships with the children in small group settings.

In 2000, we started Bible Clinics in which children sign up to receive a new Bible and attend an evening class in which they receive instruction on how to use it.

In the late 90’s, we changed the name to Adventure Kids. In 2006, we changed the name back to “Jesus and Me”. The leadership meets together each month for prayer and discussion on new ideas for ministry. We also,

visit the families of our children to encourage and uplift them and invite them to come on Wednesdays and Sundays to Sunday school and worship. Our hope is to see lives changed by the power of Jesus Christ.
