Helping people protect what they cannot afford to lose!

elebrated for its vibrant, growing arts scene, wonderful fusion of charming shops and trendyrestaurants tucked away in aestheticallypleasing historic structures, Cedarburg is a cityyou’ll never tire of exploring. It is a true haven

for those seeking a beautiful place in which to reside and work.

Upon falling in love with the tranquil, picturesque countrysidethat bordered Cedar Creek in the early 1840s, a group ofGerman and Irish settlers established the community ofCedarburg. While the city developed and prospered, itretained the original charm on which it was founded.

Careful preservation of many structures representing the area’sbygone days is a major commitment and source of pride amongthe entire community of Cedarburg. As a result of heedfulmaintenance to Cedarburg’s early edifices, its historicdowntown accurately reflects the lifestyle experienced morethan a century ago.

Cedarburg possesses two distinct districts listed on theNational Register of Historic Places, which togetherencompass well over 200 buildings of historical significance.Nestled within the heart of the city, these structures continueto exist as shops, restaurants, homes, museums and publicbuildings, providing a focal point for the community’s dailyway of life. The town of Cedarburg, a historically ruralcommunity located in a rapidly developing portion of OzaukeeCounty, claims an additional historic district listed on thenational register, known as the Hamilton Historic District.

Today, with a population reaching nearly 11,500 in the cityand an additional 6,000 residents in the town, Cedarburg offersthe best in small-town American life, yet is large enough tooffer the modern amenities of a 21st-century, contemporarycity. And the metropolitan attractions of Milwaukee are onlyminutes away.

Cedarburg’s leaders have developed a long-range plan foreconomic expansion to ensure structured growth.Simultaneously, the community remains steadfast in theprotection of the environment and the preservation ofCedarburg’s historical essence, while the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce persists in its commitment to foster healthyeconomic growth that will provide residents with an appealingenvironment in which to live and work, now and into thefuture.

he initial German and Irish settlers of Cedarburgwere enticed by the power-producing potential ofCedar Creek; a feature that ultimately led to theestablishment of the village in the early 1840s.

Ludwig Groth was the first recordedsettler of Cedarburg, making his home near thecreek in 1842. Two years later, Frederick Hilgen andWilliam Schroeder purchased a tract of land fromGroth and established a grist mill, which remains adistinguished element of today’s Cedarburg skyline.

Four additional dams and mills were constructed inthe following years, centralizing the life of thefledgling town along the banks of Cedar Creek.Built in 1864, the Wittenberg Mill stood as the solewoolen mill west of Philadelphia to produce worsted yarns. Themill’s buildings still stand today, forming the historic Cedar CreekSettlement, featuring charming shops, dining establishments, artists’ studios and a flourishing winery.

The coming of the railroad to Cedarburg in 1870 stimulated furthergrowth and prosperity. The developing town continued to draw incrowds of visitors and business travelers, prompting local businessmento open hotels in order to accommodate this influx of people. Manyof the buildings that were erected during this time – churches, homes, mills, taverns and businesses – were constructed utilizing Niagaralimestone from two local quarries, a characteristic that may still beviewed to this day, thanks to Cedarburg’s dedication to preservinghistorical structures.

By 1885, the emerging town’s population had swelled to 1,500, resultingin the incorporation of what is now Ozaukee County. As the communitycontinued to grow and prosper, Cedar Creek was further employed topower lumber and flour mills, a nail factory and a brewery.

TExploring Cedarburg is like stepping back in time, many of thelimestone and cream city brick buildings remain unaltered. Thededication to preserving these historic edifices was a catalyst in theenactment of a comprehensive landmarks ordinance and theestablishment of a landmarks commission to protect the city’s

architectural heritage.

Thanks to the efforts of the Landmarks Commission andCedarburg Chamber of Commerce, in the mid-1980sCedarburg’s downtown Washington Avenue area wasdesignated as a historic district on the National Registerof Historic Places. Adjacent to the downtown area is theColumbia Road Historic District, which was listed onthe National and State Registers of Historic Places in 1992.

The Ozaukee County Historical Society is headquarteredin the lovingly restored Interurban Depot building where a vastselection of fascinating materials is available for examination onsiteby genealogists, students, researchers and other interested parties.

However, Cedarburg is not just aboutantiques, as newer additions have been made to theshopping area.
