Wapakoneta, Ohio is a proud city of 9,500-plus residents that enjoy a peacefullifestyle in the developing West CentralOhio region. This charming history-infused town laid its roots in the

1780s with the establishment of a Shawnee settlement along the Auglaize River. The city’s original name, Waughpaughkonnetta, has evolved into the name we know today — Wapakoneta.

The Shawnee tribe residing here was ultimately removedfrom Ohio and sent to Kansas by 1832, opening up the landfor settlement. Wapakoneta was officially platted in AllenCounty in 1833 and was later designated the county seat ofthe newly formed Auglaize County in early 1848. The townexperienced a surge in growth and development with the arrival of the Dayton & Michigan Railroad in 1858. It soonbecame a leading shipping hub in this region of Ohio. By thelate 1800s, Wapakoneta’s population grew immensely and its

industrial sector became moreand more diversified—leadingto the establishment of athriving downtown district.

In 1969, Wapakonetaearned worldwide recognition after NeilArmstrong, a native son, became the first man towalk on the moon. Thisstrong connection withthe space program can beseen at the ArmstrongAir & Space Museum.Other prominent residents from the

community’s earliest days are memorialized through street names, and the

preservation of many of Wapakoneta’s historic structures ensures the past will always be remembered.

While Wapakoneta continues to embrace its historic hometown feel, it is also a progressive city that maintains akeen eye on the future. With excellent business opportunities, attractively priced homes and access to outstanding cultureand recreation, Wapakoneta embodies the perfect balance ofsmall-town living with big-city amenities. j

On July 20, 1969, the world paused for a brief, shining moment. Apollo 11 had reached themoon. Wapakoneta’s native son, Neil Armstrong, stepped out of the Eagle and setfoot on the soft dust of the lunar surface and

said the words we still quote today:

“That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap formankind.”

As the local astronaut was saying those words, Ohio officialswere already planning a museum to honor Armstrong’sachievement, as well as all Ohioans who have attempted todefy gravity. Armstrong’s exploits and other achievements inOhio’s history of flight can be experienced at the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum. The museum takes visitorson a journey through aerospace history. Designed to resemble

a futuristic moon base, the building’s whitedome actually houses the Astro-Theaterthat presents multi-media presentationsof space exploration. The museum is hometo the Gemini 8 flown by Armstrong in1966, a space shuttle landing simulatorand a piece of moon rock.
