HISTORYHumble BeginningsToday’s famous Ranch Guest House started outas a simple two-story farmhouse built in the1850s. Driven by aspirations of becoming afarmer, Davenport, IL railroad worker WilliamFeldman, his wife Sophie, and their fivechildren bought the farm in 1914. Known asWoodside Farm for the next 15 years, theFeldman’s saw their dream expand as more ofthe friends and family vacationed at the Ranchas a “getaway” from the city. For the next 60years Woodside Ranch would be owned andoperated by the Feldman family.

Winter 1998Damon Zumwalt, owner of Woodside Ranchand owner/developer of Woodside SportsComplex, came to visit Woodside Ranch as aguest over the winter and while on horsebackhe ventured through the woods and into themeadows. Damon’s first thought was, “Howmany soccer fields could I build here?” Like thevisionary and entrepreneur that he is, Damonenvisioned hundreds of youths playing sports, and believed that Woodside Ranch had thepotential to become the most unique sportscomplex in the country.

As a father of five children, all of whom wereinvolved in sports growing up, Damon had anidea of what worked and what didn’t work.Damon’s vision was to create a state-of-the-art

complex where youths would compete andlearn valuable lessons taught through sports, lessons and principles he also learned throughhis career as a high school and collegiate athlete.

THE PRESENT AND FUTUREIn 2002, Damon purchased the land fromLucille Feldman Nichols, one of the originalfive Feldman children. It has been over 10 yearsof persistence, commitment and patience thatDamon’s vision has begun to formalize into areality. On November 13, 2010 one half milefrom Woodside Ranch, Ground BreakingCeremonies were held at the construction sitewhere over 100 community officials, residents, media and celebrities attended, including thenChicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen,hall-of-famer Paul Molitor and future hall-of-famer Frank Thomas.

Since 2010, Woodside Sports Complex hasgrown to include the 245-acre facility inMauston, WI as well as soccer and baseballfields in Wisconsin Dells, WI. Future plans alsoinclude championship stadiums for baseballand soccer as well as tennis courts. Opening inJune 2014 with eight fully synthetic turfbaseball/softball fields in Mauston, Woodsideeventually plans to host over 80 events per yearwhen complete, and is committed to becomingthe premier complex that providesprogramming for youth and athleticdevelopment, and attractions for the entirefamily.

All communities have local artists. Wehave a special one here in ourcommunity. The local artist is Albert

“Burt” D. Schmiege. He was 32 when he losthis central vision. He has a form of maculardegeneration called Stargardt’s disease, theonset of which typically begins before age 20.Although Scmiege said it’s “no fun” not seeingthings the way they’re supposed to look, hedid not take his vision loss sitting down.Instead, he used his limited vision as anopportunity to push the boundaries of hisabilities, which included taking up oils andcanvas.

Schmiege has found his real vision forpainting. He paints mostly landscapes, usinglimited colors because Stargardt’s left him

with a red-green deficiency. He creates moreby feel than sight, using his fingers and handsas brushes to move the paint to create hislandscapes, sunsets and visions of beauty. Hecannot see the finished painting like a sightedperson can. He paints in quadrants, movingclockwise around the canvas using peripheralvision. When supplies and ideas are plentiful,he often paints for 10 hours a day. Othertimes, he may take a break for a week andthen return to apply the finishing touches.

Painting is a stress reliever that gives Albertindependence and a sense ofaccomplishment. When he is painting he is incontrol, instead of the disease. You can findhis paintings showcased at our local artistshop, The Red Geranium, by the interstate.
