Time has been gentle to the Baraboo area; its vibranthistory is evident in everything from its carefullymaintained Victorian homes to the spectacular mile-thick layer of Baraboo quartzite that hugs the city. This
glossy, pink rock (dating back 1.7 billion years) emerges inDevil’s Lake State Park, continues deep below the earth’ssurface and then surfaces once again a few miles north ofBaraboo, serving as a brilliant reminder of the historicalrichness that permeates the city.
According to one historical interpretation, Baraboo is namedafter a French trader and trapper who bartered with NativeAmericans near the mouth of a stream, which today bears hisname. Initially, only the river was called Baraboo; the namelater applied to the bluffs, the city and the town.
From the beginning, early settlers were attracted to Baraboo’sideal location and abundant water supply. The lumberindustry flourished upon the banks of the Baraboo River, andtrading for the rich agricultural land surrounding the townsoon followed, serving as a catalyst for Baraboo’s progressivegrowth. A charter election in 1866 created the Village ofBaraboo; 16 years later, on April 1, 1882, Baraboo became acity by legislative action of the State of Wisconsin. Today, theCity of Baraboo is the proud home of more than 12,000people. Next door, the Village of West Baraboo is home toover 1,400 people. Together, Baraboo and West Baraboo boasta thriving tourism industry, wonderful homes and a widerange of recreational opportunities.

The Baraboo area lies at the heart of the BarabooRiver Valley in south-central Wisconsin, 35 milesnorthwest of Madison and approximately halfwaybetween Milwaukee and La Crosse. The Baraboo
area is served by U.S. Highway 12 and State Highways33, 113, 123 and 136. The area can be reached byInterstates 90 and 94, which connect with U.S. Highway12 (nine miles) and State Trunk Highway 33 (13 miles)into Baraboo. The Wisconsin & Southern Railroadprovides rail freight service; several trucking firms providehighway freight service. The area is served by an airportthree miles north of Baraboo on U.S. Highway 12.

This facility is recognized as the world’spremier circus history institution and strives to keep theglamour of one of America’s favorite pastimes alive throughthe preservation of circus history, live circus performances andeducational outreach programs including authentic horse-drawn circus parades. Open to the public since 1959, CircusWorld is home to several structures belonging to the originalRingling Brothers Circus and is considered a NationalHistoric Landmark.
History comes alive at the Sauk County Historical Society.Thousands of artifacts relating to the pioneer, NativeAmerican, military, textile and architectural history of SaukCounty are on display. The museum also supports a researchlibrary with an extensive collection of pictures, documentsand memorabilia relating to Sauk County and its inhabitants.
The Mid-Continent Railway Museum (located in nearbyNorth Freedom, Wisconsin) recreates life as it was during theglory days of railroads. Children and adults alike are sure tolove the museum’s educational exhibits; displays of rollingstock; and original, operating trains!
Don’t miss a trip to the International Crane Foundation,which works toward the worldwide conservation of cranesand the wetland and grassland communities on which theydepend. Due to habitat loss and unregulated hunting, the

population of these graceful birds, who have inhabited the earth for the last34 to 50 million years, is declining. Families, groups and schools areencouraged to visit the Foundation and participate in outreach programs,such as staff presentations and the Midwest Sandhill Crane Count.
The mission of the Wisconsin BigCat Rescue & Educational Centerin nearby Rock Springs is toprovide a safe place and acomfortable home for abused,neglected and unwanted big cats.Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue &Educational Center is a federallylicensed facility that gives thesecats a chance at a peaceful andhappy life, and a chance for thepublic to learn about them.
Explore the legacy of famed conservationist Aldo Leopold at the LeopoldCenter, located northeast of Baraboo on a rustic road along the beautifulWisconsin River. Learn about the author of A Sand County Almanac, go ona guided tour or take a workshop on land management. The Leopold Centerwas honored in October 2007 with the highest certification in the world bythe U.S. Green Building Council’s L.E.E.D. rating system.
The night isn’t complete without a visit to Baraboo’s Ho-Chunk Casino andBingo! Consider yourself lucky as you try your hand at blackjack and pokertables, a variety of other casino games, slot machines, and intense games ofhigh stakes bingo at Wisconsin’s largest casino. There are endless opportunities for fun as a resident ofthe Baraboo area. Devil’s Lake State Park, located justtwo miles south of Baraboo, offers hiking, scuba diving,swimming, camping, boating, fishing and rock
climbing among 500-foot cliffs that tower above a crystal-clear lake. The breathtaking beauty of Baraboo’s majesticbluffs will leave you feeling as if you have stumbled upon aslice of heaven. Having just celebrated their Centennial, thepark staff is anxious to welcome all visitors as they enjoy theirnext 100 years. Lake Wisconsin, just 15 minutes away, alsooffers more boating and fishing options.
Golfers will enjoy challenging courses at the Baraboo CountryClub, Devil’s Head Resort and Fairfield Hills Golf Course.The beautiful vistas in the area will make your round of golfthat much more enjoyable.
The Baraboo area also boasts the longest stretch of restoredriverway in the U.S. The dams that once served thecommunities along the Baraboo River gradually became
obsolete and were removed, resulting in a tremendousrecreation opportunity for canoe and raft enthusiasts.
The fun doesn’t endwith the beginning ofwinter. The Barabooarea boasts a variety ofdownhill and cross-country skiingopportunities. Nearbyare three downhill skiresorts that offer someof the finest skiing in allof Wisconsin. Devil’sHead Resort &Convention Center,only eight miles southof Baraboo, offers 28
runs and 16 lifts, as well as cross-country skiing and a skatingrink. Other fun winter activities include cross-country skiingat Devil’s Lake State Park, ice fishing, ice skating,snowmobiling and sledding.
Additional recreational facilities available to Baraboo residentsand visitors include a skateboard park, swimming pools,tennis courts, softball and baseball diamonds, soccer fields,and a city zoo. For those wanting to exercise their minds,learning is always fun at the Baraboo Public Library. Browsethrough a large selection of titles or take advantage of its largevideo/audio collection. Computer equipment is available forpublic use as well.

Stepping into the magnificently designed Al. RinglingTheatre is like being transported into the early pages ofBaraboo’s rich cultural history. Built in 1915 andcrafted in the style of the Great Opera Hall at the
Palace of Versailles, the Al. Ringling Theatre has been anornate fixture in downtown Baraboo for over 90 years. Redcarpeted hallways, intricate ceiling frescos, golden carvedtheater boxes and fine draperies attribute to the theater’sreputation as the “prettiest playhouse in America.” Sinceopening night, the theater has featured everything fromvaudeville to opera, as well as a variety of live musical andtheatrical productions.
Today, residents and visitors to Baraboo can experience themagic of the Al. Ringling Theatre as it was more than 90 yearsago. The appearance of the theater is being carefullypreserved; restoration efforts include the acquisition ofadjacent property in order to expand cultural programming.
Other cultural events sponsored by the Baraboo area includeseveral productions by the local theater guild and art fairs.Concerts on the Square take place Thursday evenings duringsummer on the courthouse square. The local school systemactively supports the instruction and production of theatricaland musical productions. A local arts and humanitiesconsortium organizes and promotes a variety of other culturalprograms and events.

Residents of the Baraboo area take advantage of first-class educational resources for people of all ages.Knowledgeable, caring faculties; active school boards;and involved parents work together to provide an
academic environment conducive to learning. A well-roundedcurriculum emphasizes traditional, as well as contemporary,learning skills to prepare students for the future.
Nearly 3,000 individuals attend public and private schoolswithin the Baraboo area. The Baraboo School District consistsof five elementary-level schools, a middle school and highschool. Baraboo also has two parochial facilities, St. JosephCatholic Grade School and St. John Lutheran Grade School.
For those pursuing higher education, the University ofWisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County Campus offers courseworkfor the first two years of study toward most degrees. Studentscan earn an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Sciencedegree. They may then elect to transfer to a four-year
institution, or remain in the area and earn a bachelor’s degreein selected majors through the school’s Collaborative DegreeProgram.
Both the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County andMadison College (located in the neighboring community ofReedsburg) offer faculty consulting assistance, classroomcontinuing education and on-site training to local businesses.In addition to full-time programs and associate’s degreecourses in areas such as nursing, accounting and finance,Madison College offers a variety of courses designed to appealto an individual’s interests and creative side such asphotography, cooking and furniture refinishing. TheWisconsin Job Center-Sauk County provides a one-stoplocation for job seekers and employers searching for assistancewith work force development initiatives.

Baraboo area residents take advantage of excellentmunicipal services, police and fire protection,recreation and parks, and public works.
The City of Baraboo utilizes a council/manager type ofgovernment, including an administrator whoseresponsibilities include organizing the administrativeactivities of the city and making all aspects of municipalmanagement more effective. Each of Baraboo’s ninedistricts are represented by an elected alderperson. Thealderpersons and the mayor form the council. The mayor,alderpersons, clerk and treasurer are chosen by theelectorate.
The Village of West Baraboo utilizes a board of trusteesform of government, which is overseen by the villagepresident. The trustees are elected as at-large representativesof the community as a whole.
The City of Baraboo maintains its own police department,while the Village of West Baraboo is covered by the SaukCounty Sheriff ’s Department.
In addition to serving the City of Baraboo, the firedepartment has a contract with the state to providebuilding fire protection at Devil’s Lake State Park andneighboring municipalities, such as the Village of WestBaraboo; the towns of Baraboo, Fairfield and Greenfield;and a portion of Sumpter.
