Celebrating 100 days of Maths
Days 38 - 51
2015
Grade one children celebrated Day 38 of Maths by making bead strings. They had to carefully place beads on the string in groups of ten. While they were making their string they were checking by counting by tens, twos and ones. They will use these bead strings for lots of activities during the year.
Finding numbers on the bead string.
22 is 2 tens and 2 ones 71 is 7 tens and 1 one
The students worked hard to estimate the capacity of various containers in litres and millilitres.
Using water and measuring jugs, the students calculated the actual capacity and compared these to their estimates.
Grades 3 to 6 were working on capacity.
Grade 2 were learning about 2D shapes.
The children have been working together to make 2D shapes using stretchy material.
triangles
Trying hard to make a circle. It was difficult to get the shape with a smooth curved line.
These children have made a hexagon.
The children made lots of different quadrilaterals.
Grade 4/5 WR have been practising their mental addition and subtraction skills by playing this warm up game.
Grade 4/5 WR are working on improving our estimation skills. Estimation is an important skill to develop. It helps us check is our answers are reasonable. We have been using containers of objects to estimate within a range. For example, we looked at the smallest container of pompoms and one child guessed that there might be between 10 and 20. Other children had slightly different estimates of the range. We then counted to see if we were close to the range. The container held 16 pompoms. Most children were able to have a successful estimate as the number was within the range. We then used this information to help us estimate the number of pompoms in the other containers.
Grade 4/5 WR have been working on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 and estimating answers when adding. We have been playing the “Estimating Sums’ game. We have to round our numbers to the nearest 10, add them together and then decide which range our answer will fit into. Our partner checks the actual answer using a calculator.
Grade 4/5WR are busy doing division. They are using counters to share into equal groups.
On Day Mathematics Grade 4/5E listened to the picture storybook "Mr Archimedes" by Pamela Allen. Mr Archimedes, Kangaroo, Goat and Wombat love their baths, but each time they got in they made the bath overflow! After reading the story, the students investigated the concept of volume and displacement of water. They estimated which 3D objects would have the greater volume and tested their estimation by placing the objects into cups of water and observing the rising water level.
Lotto – What a lotto’ fun we had.
We were investigating the chances of winning
lotto. We started with a game where we had to
choose 2 numbers from 6. We had fun playing the
game and the winners in each of the 10 games we
played won a snake lolly – they were lovely.
There were between 0 and 4 winners in each
game and over the ten games we had 27 winners. Some children didn’t
win but they were given a snake at the end.
We are nearly up to 50 days of Maths. Grade ones have been playing a game called ‘First to 50’. The children were rolling a dice and collecting icy pole sticks to match the number on the dice.. They made tens by bundling the icy pole sticks. First to get 5 bundles of ten was the winner.
After playing the 10 games we investigated the mathematics involved. Firstly we calculated all of the possible winning combinations – there were 15:- (1, 2) (1, 3) (1, 4) (1, 5) (1, 6) (2, 3) (2, 4) (2, 5) (2, 6) (3, 4) (3, 5) (3, 6) (4, 5) (4, 6) (5, 6). This means a we had a 1 in 15 chance of winning. With 26 players this means that mathematically, we could expect an average of 1 or 2 per game.
Grade 4/5 WR have been investigating patterns. We used matchsticks to copy a pattern, find out what the pattern was and to continue the pattern.
We are half way to 100! 50 days of Maths
On Wednesday we celebrated 50 days of Maths. All grades read ‘The Doorbell Rang’ by Pat Hutchins. This is a story about sharing a batch of cookies when the doorbell keeps ringing and more people come to share. Each grade had 50 cookies to share and we had to work out how to do this fairly.
Grade 2/3 CH have been using the Woolworth’s Dominoes to practise their mental addition.
