Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,

Notre Dame’s 80th anniversary year has been a banner year for our award winning faculty and

students! This issue of the LegeND will give you a snapshot of all the wonderful accomplishments during the spring and summer, as well as the upcoming events for 2014-15.

We are happy to say, because of the strategic initiative, we have almost completed our upgrade in our technology infra-structure for Wi-Fi accessibility, allowing us to integrate iPads for teach-ing and learning. Stay tuned for further exciting developments in the next few issues. Moving forward you will always find the Annual Report in the summer addition of the LegeND. The report will cover our fiscal year, July 1 through June 30 of each year. We hope this will clear up any confusion regarding yearly giving. Your contributions in time, talent, and treasure to our annual appeals, scholarship funding, and the “Firmly United” Strategic Initiative for the present and future of Notre Dame, inspire us to forge ahead with hope and confidence. We applaud the accomplishments of our multi-talented stu-dent body who have challenged themselves to go the extra mile achieving greatness in the fields of math and science, the arts, athletics, journalism, family and consumer science and leader-ship. What is so important to us here at NDHS is that each young woman discover within herself her special calling and have access to the training and support needed to create her niche for making a difference in our world. I hope you enjoy this issue of the LegeND as a spirited and informative summary of the best of Notre Dame.

Notre Dame High School educates young women to become confident, compassionate Christian leaders. Each student is guided to reach the fullness of her potential and to use her gifts to make a difference in the world around her.

Notre Dame High School provides a college preparatory program to girls from diverse backgrounds through an environment of differentiated instruction.

In the spirit of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and in response to the mission of Jesus in the Catholic tradition, students are educated to integrate lifelong learning, faith, and service into their lives.

CommencementWell, girls, we made it! After four years of hard work, all fifty-eight of us accomplished at least 28 credits, 75 service

hours and 28 spirit hours, and I could not be more proud to call myself a member of the Notre Dame Class of 2014. Our class is set apart because it is full of firsts and lasts. We are the first class to have the honor of graduat-

ing with girls from St. Elizabeth’s Academy. We are the last class that will understand the struggle of finding a computer in the library without our own personal iPads. We are the first class to have our uniform skirts retired and hung up at school like professional athletes, but we are the last class to be able to measure our hard work based on how faded our navy blue skirts have become.

I would now like to take this opportunity to quote my favorite artist of all time, Hannah Montana: “They say good things take time, but really great things happen in the blink of an eye.” Good things do take time, like getting an A on a big project, becoming captain of the soccer team, finally nailing that big solo. All of these require hard work and endless amounts of time. However, making the best friends a girl could ask for and having an extraordinary high school experience happened in the blink of an eye. All of us being in a class together at Notre Dame High School truly was a great thing.

Teachers and students will use iPads for teaching and learning beginning in August 2014. Students will turn in homework through “e-backpack”, and

teachers will grade assignments electronically, post upcom-ing assignments and projects through this app. Digital text books will be used by 17 classes with more coming over the next two years. Power-point presentations will become keynote presentations as collaborative research projects are assigned. Teachers will assign video-clips to be reviewed prior to coming to class as classroom activities shift to more engagement with problem solving, data collecting, cooperative group work and comparative studies. ND’s new WiFi environment for time and task management, communication and information, offers new meaning to the goal of becoming lifelong learners in the 21st century.

Rebels to Move to the AAA ConferenceNotre Dame will move from the Metro Women’s Ath-letic Association into the Archdiocesan Athletic Asso-ciation beginning with the 2014-15 school year.

Athletics Director Mark Bayens explains the move will benefit the Rebels. “We already play teams in the AAA,” Bayens said. “A lot of these girls grew up playing against each other. This helps us get an identity moving forward and help with neighborhood rivalries.”

The Rebels will be placed in the AAA’s large-school division with St. Dominic, Rosati-Kain , Borgia, and Duchesne.

In February 2013, we kicked off Firmly United, Committed to Our Future, a strategic initiative intended to honor the rich 80 year history of Notre Dame

High School and take our mission to the next level of excellence.

At that time, we began meeting with interested stakehold-ers, letting them know how they could support the future of Notre Dame. With the generosity of these partici-pants, work has begun on becoming Wi-Fi accessible, and integrating iPads into the classrooms for teaching and learning. It has been an amazing start!

Earlier this spring, we launched the public phase of the strategic initiative and invited the entire Notre Dame community to support us in our next steps. These include making improvements to our Science building and programs, increasing need-based tuition assistance, pro-viding financial support for our outstanding faculty, and strengthening our marketing and recruiting. Longer term priorities include enhance-ments to our entranceways, gym and theatre facilities, as well as an increase to our endowment.

During the various phases of this project we have been touched as hundreds of students, faculty and staff mem-bers, parents, past parents, alumnae, School Sisters of Notre Dame, and volunteer leaders expressed what Notre Dame means to them and what our future should look like. The collective voice of these passionate stakeholders has enabled us to establish a bold vision for the future.

High school is only four years, and yet it is a time for inner growth - a time to challenge oneself, grow in faith, make plans and take risks that will lead in directions that you never believed were possible. It is important to reflect on how Notre Dame High School shaped you, your friends, and your family members into the people you are today. As you reflect, we ask that you consider making a pledge to the Firmly United, Committed to Our Future strategic initiative. Your gift can make a difference to the Notre Dame of today and tomorrow.

If you would like more information, feel free to contact S. Gail Guelker, SSND or Sandy Montgomery at 314-544-1015. We would love to talk to you about the initiative and how you can get involved.
