Connecting to Country

The year six students’ building signs are proudly displayed on each of our main buildings around the school, a reminder of the school’s acknowledgement of our connection to the landscape in which we are situated and the connection to Country through language. The knowledge and experience that year six gained through the leadership program with Doug Reckord from Bournda Environmental Education Centre and Lynne Thomas the Aboriginal Education Officer from Narooma Public School was valuable to students’ understanding of leadership. This year’s NAIDOC week theme, ‘Because of her we can’, felt hugely significant, as because of Lynne we all gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of Tilba and the Aboriginal history. Through her shared dreaming story about Najanuga, we learned the importance of courage and perseverance.

This week’s shout-out goes to Jody. Jody is always respectful to teachers being polite, following directions and always showing an interest in her learning. Jody cares for her classmates and the school, she is always safe in the games she plays and how she conducts herself each day. Jody is a positive role model to her classmates and to our younger students.

SASS Recognition Week

This week is SASS Recognition week, SASS is School Administration Support Staff. Our SAS staff at Central Tilba PS are Kim Atkins our School Administration Manager (SAM) and Warren Atkins our General Assistant (GA). We are very lucky to have such dedicated and friendly staff, always positive and doing their best to ensure the smooth running of our school and that our school is beautifully maintained. Thanks Kim and Warren we truly appreciate the work that you do for staff, students, community and our school!

Kitchen Garden Fun

Fortnightly Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus

Each fortnight we focus on an area that builds and deepens our understanding of our core values and the expected behaviour at Central Tilba PS. This week our focus has been ‘Bus Times’.

Kitchen Garden news

The kitchen garden is up and running, we now have Dean and Tarquin helping the kids in the garden on a Wednesday. The children are very enthusiastic and leave with smiles on their faces and full stomachs. They have managed to cook enough food for the whole school in their cooking sessions.

In order to keep up with with these yummy lunches we are asking if each child can bring a gold coin donation to help fund the supplies we need each week. Thanks, Sandy and Linda.

Relieving Principal’s Report Week 6, Term 3 – P&C Meeting

• Small Schools Knockout Soccer – How quickly things change, the game is back on and thanks to all involved there will be an opportunity to play 2 games if the first game is won, saving us another long trip and additional organisation.

• Leadership and Connection to Country Program – our program ended at the end of week three with the walk up Gulaga with Lynne Thomas and Doug Reckord. Building signs have gone up, connecting the school and students to the local landscape through language.

• Term 3 Leadership – we have continued to provide leadership opportunities for year 6 as they run morning movement for the whole school three days a week, this aligns with the Premiers Sporting Challenge where students aim to be active for an average of 60 min a day.

• Kitchen Garden – Linda and Sandy have been taking students for either gardening or cooking this term. Students in 4-6 are cooking or gardening for an hour session once a fortnight, while students in K-3 are cooking or gardening each week for 30 minutes. There is 100% engagement in the activities and much enthusiasm from everyone.

• BEEC Creative and Talented Programs – The completed Google forms responses received indicated that there is an interest in continuing to provide the gifted and creative workshop opportunities for students in stage 2 and 3. To be followed up on in term 1 next year.

• External Validation and school plan – school staff have continued to work on completing school milestones for our school plan and the external validation report. Documents shared.

• Parent interviews – teachers provided families with opportunities to discuss student progress and goals in week 3 but we are also always available and meetings can be arranged by calling or dropping in and talking to Kim.

• High School transition – A half-day transition is being organised by year advisor Lachlan Reilly for the 11th September (week 8). Students are to catch normal buses to school in the morning where Mr Reilly will meet students. NHS will then provide a bus back to Central Tilba PS, leaving the high school around 11:40am.

• Music – Students have been engaged in weekly percussion workshops with Greg Sheehan this term, they will continue into term 4 with a whole school workshop with Narooma PS, Bermagui PS, Tanja PS and Tathra PS on 16th November. They will end the day with performances.

• Staff Professional Development – This term, Peter Markham has participated in a course on STEM/STEAM which will see Mr Markham building on his STEM/STEAM teaching skills from earlier in the year. Juanita Low has been employed as a music mentor for Four Winds this term with Ms Munn and K-3 benefiting from the experience. Ms McGrath and Ms Munn attend learning progressions training as the progressions will replace the literacy and numeracy continuums as a teaching and learning tool next year.

• Sporting Schools Grant – This term the grant allowed students to be involved with gymnastics, next term we have applied to allow all students to attend swimming lessons.

• Athletics – students were successful at the carnival with lots of improvements in their events. Our relay team has successfully made it to the regionals, September 14.

• Jump Rope 4 Heart – The visit from the St George Skipperoos was very engaging and as a result students have been out skipping during breaks. Our own jump off date is on the last day of term, 28th September.

• Mandatory registers – We are currently updating our register for parent volunteers, please fill in an Appendix 5 declaration if you haven’t already. Forms will be sent home in the following week.

• New website – Our new website is now live, I attended training in week two but there are issues uploading weekly newsletters to the new site. Once the issues are fixed we will be back to having a website that is updated weekly. Newsletters are emailed to all families and hardcopies sent home, if you know of anyone wishing to be added to our email list please contact Kim.

• The Festival of Instrumental Music – Recorders – Juanita Low our music teacher will be entering a Years 3-6 group of recorders to begin rehearsing at school next term with an option of adding more students at the beginning of next year. To perform at the Opera House in term 2, 2019.

− Have we done a thank you letter to Vicki and Peter for the wood donation for the Bush Fiesta Raffle. If not, ask Jo Lane to do.

− Thanks to Jo Lane for collecting tin money and dropping off and banking money for the bags. Asking for new volunteers to do this job, perhaps someone who lives in town?

− Proposed to leave a donation tin at the front counter of the office for kitchen/garden donations. − Dean and Tarquin to help with the garden structure. Materials will be listed and whatever can't be donated will

General Business • Sandy and Linda suggested having a kid’s stall next Easter festival. Cards artwork, lucky dips etc, to be sold.

• P&C donation to Annabel - $100 from P&C “state money” $100 gift from P&C for raffle. Voted – 3 against rest voted yes. To discuss letter to Club when their decision is met and correspondence received.

• Tea towels for a fundraiser. Yes! All in favour of. $8.50 under 50 $7.50 over 100. Handprints, face drawings, animal drawings to be discussed at next meeting.

• Raffle tickets order from Kim for school details, numbered etc. Cost $264 for 2000 tickets. Thanks to Kim for organising.

Transport Volunteers As per New South Wales Department of Education Policy, all parents, carers or volunteers assisting in providing transport of students, must complete an Appendix 5 - Working with Children Check: Declaration for Volunteers Form, which is available at the school office.

On Sunday 16th September, the Animal Welfare League, Eurobodalla Branch, will be holding their annual fundraiser – TAILWAGGERS! This fun family day out takes place at NATA Oval in Narooma. Register your dog from 9am and walk with 100 other dogs and their people around the beautiful Wagonga Inlet foreshore. Back at the Oval there will be ring events, an obstacle course to try with your dog and lots of stalls and games. Great prizes for the Happiest Dog and Best Fancy Dress!

It is only $10 for the first dog in your family and $5 for every subsequent dog. For further information, call Clare on 0403 013 493.

Don’t forget all raffle tickets will need to be in by Friday 21st September 2018. Drawn at the P and C meeting starting at 12.30pm.

Please sell them to all your friends and family that would love a holiday down here or a snorkelling trip to Montague Island or a delicious meal at the Dromedary Hotel.

Only $2 each and such a great cause – all our children, helping them to experience a wider variety of activities from which they can learn and enjoy.

Bookclub orders are due in by Monday 10th September. Please ensure your child’s name is clearly marked and payment is included. Or you might like to start ordering using the loop online ordering system and all books will be delivered to the school.

Canteen lunch orders from Tilba Bakery every Friday. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly marked on a paper bag with correct money enclosed.

The P&C has already paid for ALL students in the school to be covered and ask that parents consider reimbursing the P&C this small cost for having their primary student children covered for accidents. Please don’t forget to let the school know if your child has any kind of injury covered by the benefits payable so that we can send a claim home for you to complete (even if you haven’t paid the insurance). P&C MEMBERSHIP - The P&C ask all families to become members of our P&C Association. It is not necessary to attend any or all meetings, although we hope that as many parents as possible will try and support the P&C at their meetings, but by paying the small membership subscription of only $5.00 per PERSON, per year, you ARE supporting the P&C. Unless P&C subscriptions have been paid, you are not able to vote on any issues that arise at meetings or at the AGM. This donation helps to pay for the P&C’s affiliation fees with the Federation of P&C, Public Liability insurances and P&C Workers’ insurance; this amounted to over $440 last year.
