CGS ConferenceEach year CGS hosts a conference to highlight relevant issues in aBangladeshi and global context. In 2010 Environmental Challengeswere addressed while in 2011 we looked at Global Inequalities, in-cluding economic, social and political inequalities and the MDGs.In 2012 we are hoping to re-visit some of the issues tackled in2010 and 2011 within the framework of current technological de-velopments.PreambleTechno logy has a lways offered the possibility of a better quality oflife by providing solutions to agricultural, health and energyneeds. Yet this has been at an enormous cost; with resource ex-traction and em issions causing air, water and land pollution and insome cases dire environmental consequences. A distressing para-dox is that while technology has on the one end taken man to themoon and found solutions to some of the deadliest diseases, thevast majority of the worlds population continues to live in ab jectpoverty with insufficient food and limited access to basic neces-sities such as clean water, energy, healthcare or education. The persisting contradictions between a better life created andsupported by techno logy for the wealthy few, and increasingenvironmental degradation and persistent poverty for thevast majority calls for a deeper exploration and under-standing of the nature of technology and its relationshipto a sustainable society.
