Chamber Update July 2010 The mission of the Ames Chamber of Commerce is to provide our members services that strengthen the economic vitality in Ames and enhance the quality of life in our community. NEWS Big honors for Hallenbeck V ice President of Existing Business and Industry Ron Hallenbeck is lining up the accomplishments. While wrapping up the 2010 annual Executive Call Survey for the Ames Eco- nomic Development Com- mission, Ron also locked up the position of president of the Iowa State University Alumni Association for the 2010-11 year. The gavel was exchanged during the May 21 annual meeting for the ISUAA. Ron served an instrumental role in the new Alumni Center as the Chair of Finance for the project. In addition to his participation on the ISUAA Board, Ron’s ongoing involvement with the University includes the Order of the Knoll, Cyclone Club, and serving as president of the corporation board and house adviser to Theta Delta Chi fraterni- ty. Just weeks later in June, Ron proceeded to gradu- ate from Leadership Iowa, a nine-month program of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry that brings together leaders from around the state to learn about significant issues facing Iowa. Ron was one of 40 individuals selected for the 2009-10 class year, and graduated with a dinner ceremony conveniently held at Howe Hall on the campus of Iowa State Uni- versity. The graduation was part of the agenda for the annual Iowa ABI Conference. We congratulate Ron on all these amazing accomplishments. ISU football coachPaul Rhoadscoaches YPs onteamwork andleadership

In mid-June, a crowd of 70 youngprofessionals and guests joinedtogether to hear ISU football coachPaul Rhoads discuss his tricks of thetrade in teamwork and leadership.During hispresentation,Rhoadssharedsecrets forsuccess inleading, cre-ating andmaximizingthe perform-ance ofeffectiveteams. In2009, Rhoadsled theCyclones to a7-6 record and a victory over Min-nesota at the Insight.com Bowl inTempe, Ariz. The 2010 season willbegin Rhoads’ second season as theCyclones’ head football coach.

Prior to Rhoads’ presentationinside the Jacobson Building, an ISUathletics facility, guests were giventhe task of networking with anotherguest whom they didn’t alreadyknow. Groups were encouraged toengage in a discussion about howtheir businesses might be able towork together and create new busi-ness opportunities between compa-nies. These ice breaker activitieswere reinstated into Lunch and Learnprograms in 2010 to further encour-age YPA members to network andfind ways to enhance their businessofferings through YPA connections.

Local Ames masterbarbecue chefand YPA membergives a lesson on summer barbecuing

Delicious scents wafted fromMoore Memorial Park on Wednesday,June 16, where YPs were againinspired by a different kind of coach— this time, a grill master and barbe-cue extraordinaire. Story CountyPlanner by day and barbecue chefand competitor by night, Ryan New-strom and his team, Big T’z Q Cru,

have already placed fourth runner-upat the Great American Barbecue inKansas City, Mo. (out of 190 teams);grand champion at Smokin’ in theJunction in West Des Moines (out of50 teams); West Des Moines; andgrand champion at Ottumwa’s O-town Showdown (out of 25 teams).Guests learned how to make theirown tasty barbecue meal while enjoy-ing conversation with fellow YPAmembers and guests.

Art Walk celebrated Main Street’s 100th anniversary

H undreds joined in celebratingthe 100th Anniversary of MainStreet on June 4 during Art

Walk. The celebration kicked off withan official ribbon cutting at Tom EvansPark. Helping cut the ribbon was 103-year-old Ames resident Marie Severson,and Sonya Stoltze Newstrom, presidentof the Cultural District.

The Cultural District came alive withart as 39 businesses hosted local artists.Premiering at Art Walk, the Ames His-torical Society showcased photos ofMain Street over the past 100 years in20 locations. These historical photoswill be on display at different timesthroughout the year. To help celebrate100 years of Main Street, commemora-tive wine glasses were sold and usedthroughout the evening in wine tastingsat seven locations.

Fourth of July in the District

2010 marks the seventh year forAmes’ old-fashioned flag-waving

parade. For the past six years, theMain Street Cultural District has beenthe home of the Fourth of July paradeswith crowds estimated at well over10,000 people each year. Fourth ofJuly in the District has grown toinclude a pancake breakfast, the BillRiley Talent Search, live music and afun festival with lots of activities forthe whole family.

The festival following the parade inBandshell Park will include a Battle ofthe Bands with four bands battling fortheir favorite charities. Kids’ activitieswill include a balloon splash, inflatable

games and much more. Food vendorsand organizational booths will roundout the event with sweet treats, carni-val foods, a pie eating contest and livetaekwondo and gymnastics demonstra-tions to name a few.

A big thanks goes to the businessesthat make 4th of July in the Districtpossible. Sponsors of the Fourth ofJuly parade include First NationalBank and Iowa State University. Tune In to MainStreet continuesthrough July

Hundreds have been enjoying Tune Into Main Street concerts each week inTom Evans Park. The concerts will con-tinue through July 29, each Thursdayfrom 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Many shops stayopen until 8 p.m. throughout the concertseries, sometimes with special Thursdaynight in-store events. The MSCD Face-book page is updated each Thursdaywith specials only available Thursdayevenings.

Tune In to Main Street has somethingfor everyone. While parents are enjoyingthe concert, children are welcome to getsoaked in the balloon splash, jump in thebounce house, be creative with sidewalkchalk and paint, blow bubbles andmore. A children’s balloon artist, BeccaWemhoff, will be making balloon cre-ations for the little ones July 8 and 22,and Kate Townsend will offer face paint-ing on July 1.

In addition to the music and familyentertainment, there is free popcorn pro-vided by Wells Fargo and an outdoor

food vendor each week. The communityis encouraged to come out with familyand friends to live, listen and love whatdowntown Ames has to offer, Thursdaysin the Main Street Cultural District. The2010 Tune In to Main Street concertseries is planned in partnership with theAmes Community Arts Council and issponsored by Wells Fargo, with support-ing sponsorships from Target, WilsonCadillac TOYOTA Scion of Ames, Com-mission on the Arts, KASI Radio, ames-newsonline.com and the Ames BulletinBoard.
