Crystal and Mea Skiff thanked for their volunteer service by Travis Baumgarten

The staff of Mile Bluff Medical Center would like to recognize and thank Crystal

Skiff and her daughter, Mea, for their volunteer service.

Crystal and Mea have spent the last few years helping to keep the healing garden

at the hospital looking nice. Ruth Martin has also been a big part of the effort to

maintain the garden. “I enjoy spending time with Ruth and my mom in the

garden,” stated Mea. “Sometimes guests will even come and chat with us while

we are working.”

Last summer, Crystal and Mea spent some hot afternoons in the healing garden

pulling weeds, planting flowers and making the area look nice. “It was hard work,

but it’s worth it to know that others are able to enjoy the garden and all of the

beautiful flowers,” commented Crystal.

Besides helping out in the healing garden, Mea

also uses some of her own money to purchase

and donate brand new boxes of crayons and

coloring books to the Acute Care Department at

Mile Bluff. “When kids are in the hospital, there

usually isn’t much for them to do,” said Mea. “I

like knowing that they will at least have some

pictures to color.”

“I am proud of my daughter for her willingness to help others,” added Crystal.

“Even though she is only 11 years old, she enjoys making a difference in the

community.”

If you would like to volunteer at Mile Bluff Medical Center, Mile Bluff Clinic or

Terrace Heights Retirement Community in Mauston, contact Reverend Fairchild

at 608-847-1285. For opportunities at Crest View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center

in New Lisbon, contact Lorraine Anderson at 608-562-3667. If you would like to

donate some time at Fair View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Mauston, call

Amy Cass at 608-847-1290.

Kolovrat joins Mile Bluff surgical team

Mile Bluff Medical Center is pleased to welcome a new member to the surgical team; Frank Kolovrat, PA-C. Frank is a certified physician assistant (PA-C) who

began providing surgical care to patients in January.

In addition to being a PA-C, Frank also has a doctorate in pharmacology (Pharm.D). With his unique skill-set, Frank looks to bring integrity, compassion and

overall enthusiasm to his role at Mile Bluff. “I have a very strong sense of community and serving the public,” says Frank. “With my pharmacist experience, I

have gained a true sense of what providing high quality healthcare embodies, and how such care profoundly changes people’s lives. Becoming a Pharm.D

complimented my PA-C background, and has given me a strong foundation to make a true difference in my patients’ lives.”

As he begins his new position, Frank is looking forward to joining the Mile Bluff team and learning more about Juneau County. “I was very impressed with Mile

Bluff’s level of integrity in wanting to serve the patients in the community. I love the small intimate location of the hospital and surrounding area. It truly is an

ideal work setting for me.”

Frank’s philosophy of care is reflected in his eagerness to establish a connection with patients. “I act as my patients’ advocate, and I partner with them to meet their healthcare needs in order

to improve their overall health,” explains Frank. “I look forward to making a true difference in my patients’ lives and assisting them in meeting their goals toward wellness.”

Please join Mile Bluff in welcoming Frank to the team!

Support group being held at Mile Bluff to help those affected by autism

Autism is defined as ‘a complex, developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life, and impacts a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.’ It is considered a spectrum disorder, meaning that it affects individuals in different ways and to varying degrees. With the prevalence of autism in the United States, healthcare organizations are stepping up to offer support to

families of children living with the disorder.

On Tuesday, May 16, Reverend Jeff Fairchild will lead a support group designed to assist families of children who live with autism. The meeting will take place at Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston, beginning at 7 pm. Dur-ing the meeting there will be opportunities for participants to network with others who are dealing with situations similar to theirs, and discussion time to

learn from others about recognizing and preparing for

challenges that may arise.

Attend the upcoming autism support group at Mile Bluff Medical Center on Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm, and learn what you can do to help that special child in

your life. For more information, call 608-847-1285.

Eye camera at Mile Bluff may save sight for individuals

living with diabetes

Those in the Juneau County area with diabetes have access to a

special camera that can help retain sight. Diabetic retinopathy is one of

the most common diseases that leads to blindness in Americans. Loss of

sight can be prevented with the help of regular eye screenings.

Because not everyone has access to dilated eye exams, eye issues

caused by diabetes complications can often go unnoticed and untreated,

which can ultimately lead to blindness. Thanks to the camera in Mile

Bluff’s University of Wisconsin (UW) Specialty Clinic, individuals can now

receive affordable sight-saving screenings without the need of a costly

dilated eye exam.

Why is it important for those with diabetes to have their eyes tested?

Everyone with diabetes is at risk for developing complications due to

eye disease. Because early detection of these issues can save eyesight,

individuals with diabetes are encouraged to have their eyes examined

once a year.

How does the screening work?

A medical professional uses a special camera to take pictures of the

back of the eye. Patients simply sit in a chair, place their chin on a rest,

and look straight ahead at a green light. There is a quick flash of light for

each picture that is taken. It is easy, quick and painless.

What happens with the pictures?

The photographs are stored electronically, and are reviewed by UW

Health eye specialists. Results of the screenings are sent to the patients’

primary care provider. For those with results needing follow-up care, a list

of local eye doctors is provided.

How much does an eye test cost?

Unlike the fees for dilated eye exams, the retinal photograph

screenings are $20; and for individuals with diabetes who have Unity

Health Insurance, the service is often covered in full.

How do I get an eye photo test?

If you have diabetes and would like access to this sight-saving

screening tool, talk to your primary care provider about a referral to the

UW Specialty Clinic at Mile Bluff Clinic. If you have any questions or would

like more information, please call 608-847-7355.

Volunteer at Necedah NWR

Refuge volunteers are vital to the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge mission. Volunteers contribute hundreds of

hours each year to help meet this mission through monitoring bird populations, leading school groups,

maintaining trails, taking photos, helping in the office and repairing equipment and facilities. No special skills are

needed to be a Refuge volunteer. If you have a desire to help, we need you. We hope you'll join us! The best way

to find out about current volunteer opportunities is to contact the Refuge.
