Change Management Workshop

Workshop Objectives

To give participants opportunities to:• Develop a deeper understanding of what means to

be a Change Champion (Agent)• Consider the emotional context when developing a

Story for Change

Agenda

Welcome Back Review of key points from keynote address Introduce two group exercises

Principles of Change ManagementPrinciple Why is it Important? How it is used?

1. Gaining perspective • Getting to know each other’s challenges so that they may be addressed

2. Understanding how we adopt to changes

• Early adopters are essential allies in supporting change• In every situation gain understanding on how your

population is distributed as early adopters, interested, lukewarm and not interested

3. Leveraging Change Champions

• Individuals are always needed who have: i) made changes, ii) stories and successes to share

• Choose these people from your early adopter group• Get feedback and perspective on challenges and issues

4. Develop a Pilot Program • Whatever the nature of the program that is designed, launch it in phases beginning with a Pilot

• Pilots allow you to employ feedback from Change Champions, to test the program and incorporate changes before deploying to a larger population

Principles of Change Management

5. Deploy Pilot Program to Change Champions

• Change Champions can test the benefits of the Pilot Program by implementing what they’ve learned

• CCs can provide feedback on what is working and what is not• They can measure their results • They can share their successes and challenges

6. Create the Story for Change • A Story for Change creates a rationale for making changes • The story should take into account the emotional components of making changes• CCs should equip themselves with their stories for change leveraging their personal

experiences of implementing changes successfully7. Measure and Make It Better • CC feedback should be incorporated into improving the Program

8. Scale-up Program Deployment through your Change Champions

• Your CC have the credibility of having been through the Program and its Pilot• They have their experiences, successes and lessons learned to share• They can become resources to the next population segment to try the Program• Expand program deployment to larger population segments• As new CCs self-identify, leverage them as resources

Being a Change Champion

• A change agent lives in the future, not the present. A change agent is fueled by passion, and inspires passion in others…

• A change agent has a strong ability to self-motivate. …..

• A change agent must understand people. …

Being a Change Champion

Group Exercise A

Being A Change Champion1. What kinds of things would a Change Champion need

to say to you to persuade you to take a Workflow Education Program?

2. What kinds of support do you think you would request from your Champion?

Creating a “Change Story”

Group Exercise B

Take the range of emotions into account as you work with your group on the second activity. At your table, choose at least one of the ‘negative’ emotions on the curve. Discuss what could be said in a ‘Story’ that would help to allay those emotions or lessen the intensity of them.
