The Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) School Feeding Program is an initiative in partnership with local education stakeholders that addresses hunger among Grades 1 and 2 pupils and helps them to stay in school and learn better. Daily lunch: In each school, the 40 most undernourished pupils in Grades 1 and 2 are provided with lunch for 136 days, from July to March. Parent involvement: Parents of BLT pupils are trained by Local Implementing Partners in food preparation and budgeting so that they can apply these not only in school but also at home. Stakeholder engagement: In each site, Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) and its Local Implementing Partners (LIPs) facilitate community ownership of BLT by working with school officials, PTA members, local government, and community volunteers in implementing and sustaining the program. Employee Volunteering: In BLT sites where Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) stores are present, JFC employees serve as JGF’s ambassadors by conducting Food Safety seminars for BLT parents and monitoring BLT implementation. Program Components BLT implementation. Significance: More than 80% of pupils gain Normal Body Mass Index (BMI) level after the feeding cycle. Results likewise show improvement in attendance and academic performance among BLT pupils. Sustainability: Beyond the initial assistance of JGF, BLT becomes a permanent feeding activity through the financial and in-kind support from local government units, individuals and organizations. Scaling-up: BLT’s simple, affordable and measurable model allows for easy replication and scaling-up in more areas. From the initial eight (8) pilot schools in 2007, BLT now covers over 1,100 schools in school year 2013-2014 and has fed more than 100,000 pupils nationwide.
