Important Lines We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of

life, who proceeds from the Father and Son. With the Father and Son he is worshipped and

glorified . . .begotten*, not made, one in Being with the Father. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of

God, eternally begotten of the Father. . .

*begotten: to cause to exist or occur

Understanding the Holy Trinity

First attempt 3rd Century Arius (priest) tried to explain the Trinity Arius stated that God could not create the material

world directly because God is transcendent. God would have had to create through someone else

(the Son). Therefore, Arius believed that the Son was created and not transcendent, so the Son could not be God.

Which we know now to be untrue- according the Trinity (Son=God)
