Paths to Career Success: One Size Does Not Fit
All. Too many employees are not engaged with their work be-cause they are on the wrong path and don't know it. They may be in the right functional area, but may not realize there is an-other option to career satisfaction than the traditional ladder climbing path. In this workshop, author and Certified Leader-ship Coach, Kathy McDonald, will share the 3 main career paths she has discovered and how to help your managers have productive career planning sessions with their team members that drive employee retention. She will also help you as HR leaders think through how to support multiple career paths to ensure employee and organizational success. Register at www.SuncoastHR.org. Dear SuncoastHR Members and Friends: A couple of weeks back, we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. here in the U.S. Dr. King was a
visionary that made us think of what we could be; to think beyond what this country was at that moment and see what we
could become just by including everyone in the American Dream. To me, Dr. King’s vision was more than equality – it
was about diversity and inclusion. When
we think of diversity even today, I think we
still get hung up on old and antiquated
definitions centered around race, gender,
religion, or other “protected classes.”
Don’t get me wrong, I strongly feel that it
is important to continue to push for equali-
ty for all in the workplace. Statistically,
organizations that have women in top po-
sitions of leadership in the “C” suite are
more profitable than those run my men
yet only about 6% of the Fortune 1000
companies have women CEOs. That is
both shocking and shameful.
But I also think that we do a dis-
service if we limit our thinking of diversity to just these areas. Diversity is about so much more than these pigeon-holed
categories. To me, diversity is about perspective and how each person’s unique perspective brings diversity of thought
and ideas to any group, including ours here at SuncoastHR. Yes, diversity can be driven by things like gender and race,
but it can also be driven by environmental factors like where we grew up, how our parents raised us, are we married or
single, kids or no kids, rich or poor, college educated or GED. And the glorious fact of the matter is that none of these
makes us better than any other – it just makes us different and that makes each of us wonderful in our own right. I actual-
ly had a brief conversation with our 2016 Diversity Director, Jack Kleban about this very topic at the beginning of January
and we agreed that, while we would still like to “see” more diversity within our organization and especially on the Board of
Directors, the fact is that we do have diversity across a broad spectrum. We have men & women, multiple generations,
varying levels of experience across many competencies, and various ethnic backgrounds but the true diversity within our
group is the kind that cannot be seen on its face. That has been made clear to me many times over already and we’re
just into the second month of 2016! New and bold ideas, innovative thinking, and an entrepreneurial spirit that is trans-
forming our chapter each day.
Some might think that it is a bit self-serving for me to reference Dr. King and his Dream, being a white male but I truly
believe that Dr. King, were he alive today, would embrace this vision of diversity. That being said, with Jack ’s leadership
and passion around diversity, SuncoastHR will continue to strive for diversity in all its forms so that we will be able to
“see” the diversity that I believe we already experience within our chapter. It would take more time and space than I have
here to talk about the many reasons why we don’t see more diversity within our organizations and perhaps that’s a topic
for Jack to write about for the next newsletter (HINT). In the meantime, let us all remember Dr. King for the great vision-
ary that he was and pray that there are other great leaders like him ready to follow in his steps and lead us forward to a
day when diversity isn’t even a topic needing our attention. That will be a great day indeed!
With warmest regards,
Tim

Branding Yourself for Holistic Success
This is the topic I spoke to a group of individuals about that are in transition in the Tampa market. As many of you have come
to learn, I too was in transition for the last 2 months and I must say it was a very rewarding experience. I asked to share with
everyone, via our newsletter, just how important it is to do the right thing, pay it forward, and not to expect anything in re-
turn. For if you do that, good things will come back to you ten fold!
I am involved in many groups, associations, boards, committees, etc... SuncoastHR being one of them. If you get bored look
on my LinkedIn to see them all- Hahahaha. I am active in all of these organizations because I enjoy what they bring to the
community and the people they help. During this entire time I worked with these groups on a day to day basis, not wavering
at all from my commitment to help. I tell you this because I was contacted by so many people that I have helped over the
years, that now wanted to help me.
My SuncoastHR family was incredibly supportive and I wanted to thank everyone in our Chapter, but also thank those in the
other groups I am involved with, such as 10ACIOUS. I was fortunate that I had many opportunities within my industry of bene-
fits and property & casualty insurance, but just as many offers outside of my specialty. A humbling realization that how you
act and carry yourself is noticed, making others want to work with you and for them.
I will leave you with this. You are your own brand, every second of every day. Change is constant and if you aren't changing
then you are standing still. And we all know that things that are still will not survive, so be active and give to others.
Thank you again to everyone and I will see you all at our next meeting, where I will be a new employee of AON.
