Character Achievement Respect
Excellence
The other night while watching television, I counted 10 medicine commercials during the
60 minute show that I was watching. They claimed to help tired legs, sleepless nights,
headaches, allergies, and well, other things. It made me wonder what it would be like if they had
medicine that could help people strengthen each of their six pillars of character. Imagine if there
was something out there that could be drunk, eaten, or applied to a person that lacked kindness
or respect towards others. A magic milk shake that could make people be more trustworthy or a
better citizen. A vitamin-like chewable that could help with responsibility and fairness. It sure
would make things a lot easier.
The problem with character, however, is that it isn’t viewed in pieces. People either think
you have good character or bad based on what you do and say. Plus, once you show a character
flaw, most people have a hard time forgetting it. When we mess up, we can’t go to Target and
buy “respect replacement filters” or “caring spray” or shop on-line for the best deal on
“responsibility gel.” Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship are
the six pillars that we need to keep strong each and every day. Each one equally as important as
the other. When one falls down, you can bet that the other five will quickly begin to tilt.
So the next time you’re browsing the medicine aisle in your local drug store, don’t look
too hard for something to strengthen your character. It’s not there. It’s not on the internet and
won’t be advertised on television. Instead, watch and listen to your kids. They’re a reflection of
you and will quickly help you decide if your character needs some help.
Remember…No matter where or when, character counts!

Parent School Climate Survey, 2013-2014
Antelope Hills Elementary
Your school needs you to complete this online survey to help improve school culture and climate. It is an opportunity to
communicate your perceptions about fundamental learning supports and barriers at this school. This letter explains the
survey and, at the bottom of the page, provides your login, password and access instructions.
If you have any questions about this survey, contact Preston Fairchild at 445-4110 ext. 3399
You will have access to this online survey until April 30th
The purpose of this survey is to obtain parent perceptions of student behavior and attitudes, school programs and policies, and the
overall school climate as they relate to student well-being and learning. It deals with such issues as truancy, safety, harassment,
substance use, school connectedness, and learning supports. The survey is a companion to the California Healthy Kids Survey
(CHKS), and the California School Climate Survey (CSCS) for staff.
Your participation is voluntary. It is also very important. The information you provide will help guide district and school efforts to
promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve student achievement, and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning.
This is an anonymous survey. It is designed so that no one can be identified from the data. You do not have to respond to
any questions that you feel could be used to identify you. Simply skip any such questions.
All questions apply to this school only.
The results are for the use of your district. CDE/CHKS will preserve data confidentiality and refer any data requests to the
