ExpandedAccesstoEmergentMentalHealthServicesTheVAhasrecentlyexpandedaccesstoemergentmentalhealthservicesforveteranswithotherthanhonorabledischarges.Suicidepreventionisoneoftheirtoppriorities.Therearealittlemorethan500,000formerservicememberswithotherthanhonorabledischarges,typicallyaresultofPostTraumaticStressDisorder(PTSD),whomayusethisservice.UnderVApolicythetermmentalhealthservicesincludesbutisn’tlimitedtoservicesfortheevaluation,diagnosis,treatmentandrehabilitationofmentaldisordersincludingsubstanceusedisorders.Theveteranwillbeevaluatedandstabilized.Follow-upcarefortheirmentalhealthemergencemaybeauthorizedforupto90days.PatientsmayaccessthesystemforthisinitiativebyvisitingtheVAEmergencyroom/UrgentCareCenterorcallingtheVeteranCrisisline:1-800-273-8255press1.ServicescannotbepaidiftheveteranpresentstotheVAclinic(CBOC)oracommunityemergencydepartment.
