CHASSIS
GENERAL DEFINITION
• A chassis consists of an
internal framework that supports a man-
made object. It's analogous to
an animal's skeleton. An example of a
chassis is the under part of a motor
vehicle, consisting of the frame (on which
the body is mounted) with the wheels and
machinery.
THE REQUISITE DEFINITION
• The chassis is the backbone of the
ROBOT. Without a proper chassis the
robot is not fit for the tracks. Great
emphasis has to be laid on the design of a
structurally sound chassis design which
will not give in under the extreme
pressures an robot has to go through.
ME FIRST
• When you start with your robot , you ll
wonder …what first??
• Answer is very simple ….CHASSIS…since
chassis is the backbone as said , it has to
be defined and designed properly with
complete knowledge of strength of
materials and mechanical works.
TYPES OF CHASSIS
• Ladder Chassis
• Tubular Space Frame
• Monocoque
• ULSAB Monocoque
• Backbone Chassis
• The above mentioned types are types of
automotive chassis which correspond to
robot chassis because the robot we make
corresponds automobiles
• If we study this topic in depth …u ll see
that its all about creativity and thought
…….your mechanical imagination and
sense must be good enough .
• As the name suggests , it’s a chassis in form of a ladder. My suggestion is to use this if height of robot is over 700.
• In this--- two longitudinal rails interconnected by several lateral and cross braces. The longitude members are the main stress member. They deal with the load and also the longitudinal forces caused by acceleration and braking. The lateral and cross members provide resistance to lateral forces and further increase torsional rigidity.
LADDER CHASSIS
Tubular Space Frame
• Tubular space frame chassis employs dozens of circular-section tubes (some may use square-section tubes for easier connection to the body panels, though circular section provides the maximum strength) position in different directions to provide mechanical strength against forces from anywhere. These tubes are welded together and forms a very complex structure,
Monocoque
• monocoque is a one-piece structure which
defines the overall shape of the car.
• Its simple to build one and can be coupled
with a lot of things to increase its strength
• One of its main advantage is space
efficiency
ULSAB Monocoque
• This one is same as monocoque …ony
diffrence is that ere we use composite
materials instead of normal steel and all.
Backbone Chassis
• Backbone chassis is very simple: a strong
tubular backbone (usually in rectangular
section) connects the front and rear
motors and provides nearly all the
mechanical strength
• This one is strong for small robots
• One has to use glass fiber or PVC to make
that rectangular piece of backbone.
Suggestions
• WHAT WE SUGGEST IS LADDER ,
BACKBONE AND MONOCOQUE
CHASSIS
• Rest depends on your creativity and
thought process
Materials to be used
• Steel
• Aluminum
• Fe
• Composite metals
• Wood
• PVC
• Rubber
• Before selecting the material and forming
the design you must be aware of weight of
your motors and batteries …..as overall
weight of robot must be less even lesser
than the given limit.
• Your chassis must be strong not heavy.
• One can use strength of materials lab for
investigation n research.
Where to make one
• LABS are quite sufficient for fabricating
one
• Though one can take help from
professional workers available in markets.
How to make one
• The subject manufacturing process will
give you sufficient experience and
knowledge for fabrication , rest you can
consult senior team members for help
….and even your senior friend.
• With this I would like conclude the
presentation wishing all of you best of luck
for the event
Have fun
Thanks
