A Room with a View Tuesday’s PTA General Meeting offers insight for parents on teacher grants, school board happenings and more

ing of the school year will com-

mence at 7 p.m. in the Cafeteria.

Directly following Literacy Night

and the Fall Book Fair, PTA board

members will speak to parents, stu-

dents and teachers about updates to

their educational concerns.

Amy Egan, the presenter of the

first parent education program,

Love and Logic, will address the

audience giving a preview of her

class October 12.

The recipients of $3,000 worth of

teacher grants will be revealed (like the

stability balls purchased last school year

for first grade classes) and monies do-

nated to No Fuss will be updated.

PTA President Tasha Young will speak

on Allen ISD updates, as well. Items of

concern for Cheatham parents, including

the Allen ISD Superintendent search and

the new information regarding rezoning

of school boundaries affected by Ele-

mentary #18.

Participants do not need to be PTA

members to attend the meeting, but only

PTA members will be allowed to vote on

the action items brought to the audience. PTA General Meetings last approxi-

mately 30 minutes and refreshments will

be provided.

VP Membership

Since August, the PTA has

been conducting a contest for all fami-

lies with at least two adult PTA member-

ships. Last week, two names were drawn for

those prize packages: Cam and Megan

Fletcher and Wes and Alicia Smith. Thank you to the sponsors: Bonefish

Grill, BJ‟s Restaurant, Cinemark Allen

and Bliss Cupcakes.

And a big thank you goes out to all those

who signed up PTA so far this year. The

number of Cheatham PTA members

stands at 632 and continues to climb. All

of our children benefit when we are all

working together. The month of October begins a new con-

test and a new opportunity. All classes

with 100% of students with at least one

parent member signed up for PTA or the

4 classes with the highest percentages

will receive a pizza party from Pie 5.

There are already several classes close to

100%. And, if you haven‟t had a chance to sign

up, you can join with greater ease. New

members can sign up online at

www.joinpta.org. The information you

input there goes straight to our

Cheatham database and you still have

the chance to opt in or out of the direc-

tory. Join the PTA and help give a voice to

every student at Cheatham.

Did You Know?

Cheatham Elementary submitted more Reflections entries than any other Allen ISD elementary school in 2015.

By Beth Bradley

Reflections Co-Chair

Q: My child heard about Re-

flections at school and wants

to participate, but I don‟t understand ex-

actly what it is.

A: Reflections is a national PTA pro-

gram that gives students a chance to ex-

press their creativity. This year‟s theme

is “What Is Your Story?” Students cre-

ate an original work of art based on that

theme in one (or more) of the following

categories: literature, musical composi-

tion, photography, the visual arts, dance

choreography, and film production. Stu-

dent entries will be judged here at

Cheatham, and winners from each cate-

gory will advance to the next level, and

be judged against submissions from

other students in Allen schools. Winners

at the Allen Council level will advance

to the state level and state winners ad-

vance to a national contest. Q: My child wants to participate in Re-

flections, but doesn‟t know how to get

started.

A: The Texas PTA website has all the

information you need to get started. Go

to: http://www.txpta.org/programs/

reflections/participate/

You and your child should first review

the rules for Reflections. It‟s a good idea

for your child to be familiar with the

rules in his/her category before getting

started on his/her project. After the work

of art is finished, he or she will also need

to complete a Student Entry Form. Ac-

cess that at the Texas PTA website. Each

entry must be submitted with a com-

pleted Student Entry Form. The Artist

Statement gives students a chance to de-

scribe how their work of art relates to

this year‟s theme. The Artist Statement

is an important part of the judging proc-

ess and you can attach a separate sheet

of paper with the Artist Statement. Stu-

dents should turn their completed entries

(together with completed Student Entry

Forms) into Mrs. Bouma in the Art

Room. Q: My child wants to do a visual arts

submission and a photography submis-

sion. Can she submit 2 different entries?

A: Absolutely! There is no limit on the

number of entries, so a student can sub-

mit in all six categories if he wants. Just

remember that a separate Student Entry

Form must be attached to each entry.

Multiple entries within a single category

are also permitted. Q: I heard that Reflections is a contest

and will be judged. Will my kindergart-

ner‟s visual arts work be judged against

my fifth grader‟s film?

A: No. Each category will be judged

separately, and within each category,

work will be separated out by grade

level. At Cheatham, kindergarten

through second grade entries will be

judged together in the primary division;

third through fifth grade entries will be

judged together in the intermediate divi-

sion and sixth graders will form the mid-

dle school division. Q: My son and his friend want to work

together to create a film entry. Can they

do that?

A: Each entry must be the individual

work of one student. For the film cate-

gory, one student must do all screenwrit-

ing, directing, camera/filming and edit-

ing. Other people may appear in the

film, but the submitting student cannot

have anyone else handle screenwriting,

directing, camera/filming or editing. A

tripod may be used to hold the camera

still.

All the Books Book Fair organizer, Brandi Motion, spearheads her first book fair

For Jeana Allen, working at

Cheatham Elementary is a semi

-retirement.

“I could not ask for a better place to

come every morning,” Allen said. “The

students are what makes my job so great

and I hope to spend many more years

with them.”

After working for 25 years in the tele-

communications industry, Allen joined

Cheatham Elementary as the technology

guru.

“Campus techs like to say „if it plugs in,

I fix it.‟” Allen said. “I like to think that

if I can help the teachers and students

with their technology, I can relieve some

stress for both — and that is the goal I

strive for every day.”

Libby King (Coach K) sees Allen do this

every day.

“Mrs. Allen is one of the hardest work-

ing people I know. She goes above and

beyond her job description,” King said.

King said Allen works hard to make sure

Cheatham‟s technology is always up and

running. She helps staff and students

with any and every question they might

have.

“Not only does she do all this, she does

it with a smile!” King said. “Cheatham

Elementary is a better place because of

Mrs. Allen.”

Allen feels the same way about her co-

workers at Cheatham.

“Just like everyone else at Cheatham, I

wear many hats and do so proudly,” Al-

len said.

Allen has been married to her husband

for 42 years. Together, they have three

children and two grandsons, Royal and

Rome.

As far as hobbies, Allen claims to have

one.

“Anyone that knows me knows that I

live for the grandbabies. I like to say

they are my hobby!” Allen said.

Brandi Motion literally

spent her week in the

books.

That‟s because she was

readying Cheatham for

its Fall Book Fair —

the first book fair at the

school that she‟s been

the coordinator.

But her work didn‟t

begin last Monday.

Instead, Motion attended a workshop

hosted by Scholastic; created posters,

flyers and bulletin boards; and designed

décor and promotional ideas to incorpo-

rate this fair‟s theme.

After it all came together, she hosted

every class at Cheatham over the space

of a day and a half for student previews.

It was all for the grand opening today.

Today, the Bookaneer Book Fair opens

and Motion and a small army of volun-

teers work with students, parents and

teachers to sell books and raise money

for Cheatham‟s library.

It‟s work her predecessor, Melissa Scha-

bel, says Motion is well prepared for.

“Brandi is very friendly and a fun person

to spend time with. She loves book and

shares her enthusiasm with the kids,”

Schabel said.

Schabel said Motion assisted with the

book fair last year and really learned

what needed to happen.

“Brandi is always smiling, faces chal-

lenges head-on and isn‟t afraid to work

hard,” Schabel said.

Motion and

her husband,

Robert, have

two sons: sev-

enth-grader

Alex and third

-grader

Spencer. She

loves Broad-

way musicals,

reading, tennis

and scrap-

booking.
