Bidding on the WoodcrestCountry Club didnt go asplanned for the township or thecounty, but it will continue to berun as a public golf course.

Marlton-based real estate con-sortium First Montgomery

Group purchased the 155-acreparcel of land, with a winning bidof $10.1 million, which was al-most $4 million higher than theappraised value of the property, according to a release from Cam-den County.

First Montgomery Grouplaunched the website, thevil-lageatwoodcrest.com, early lastweek following the acquisition ofthe property.

The Village at Woodcrest, as ithas been repositioned, paying

homage to the Woodcrest nameand the village/community it willserve, will be maintained to highstandards and offer golf, swim-ming, tennis and banquet facili-ties rivaling the areas privateclubs, the site said. Interestedgolfers, tennis players and pa-trons alike are encouraged to reg-ister for the clubs newsletter tostay informed and receive invita-tions, including to the upcominggrand re-opening of the club.

Freeholder Jeffrey Nash tookthe lead in partnership with thetownship and other possible fund-ing entities to save the club, thecounty release said.

The facility lies geographicallyin the center of Camden County. The golf club dates back to 1929,when Camden Citys Jewish pop-ulation was barred at other golfcourses and started their own.

Im happy to hear that Wood-crest will continue to be pre-served for the here and now as a

public golf course, Nash said ina statement. Nevertheless, myconcern is for the future of theproperty and the impact it has on

    BRIEFSCouncil dismissed

    from lumber litigation

Cherry Hill Township Councilhas been dismissed from the Had-donfield Lumber litigation.

At a hearing in Superior Courton Thursday, May 16, JudgeFaustino J. Fernandez-Vina grant-ed the townships motion to dis-miss council from an appeal chal-lenging land use variances grant-ed at the former Haddonfield Lum-ber site on Brace Road. In her ar-guments on behalf of council,

Deputy Solicitor Erin Gill arguedthat the plaintiffs complaint didnot challenge actions taken by thecouncil and, therefore, councilsinclusion in the litigation servedabsolutely no purpose. Lynda Ya-mamoto, counsel for the plaintiffs, opposed councils dismissal fromthe case, but simultaneously askedthe judge for time to amend theircomplaint and add the zoning

board as a necessary party. Fer-nandez-Vina granted the plain-tiffs request to amend their com-plaint, but dismissed council in itsentirety from the action.

Resident one of first three graduates of Ph.D. programMarla Wander, a Cherry Hill resident, be-came one of the first three graduates of Rut-

gersCamdens landmark Ph.D. in child-hood studies program, during the Faculty ofArts and Sciences commencement ceremo-ny, on Thursday, May 23.

It is an unprecedented achievement on anational scale.

Wander and her counterparts, LaraSaguisag and Deborah Valentine, will be-come the first recipients of a Ph.D. in child-hood studies from any higher education in-stitution in the United States.

While a handful of undergraduate and

masters programs in childhood studiesexist in the United States and Great Britain,RutgersCamden launched the nations firstdoctorate in this discipline in 2007.

It is likewise a historic achievement forRutgers University, as the graduates become

the first recipients of a doctoral degree onthe universitys Camden campus.I am so excited to be one of the first

childhood studies graduates, not only hereat RutgersCamden, but throughout thecountry, says Wander. We are pioneers inthe development of this program.

Wander credits the childhood studies pro-gram for fostering a collaborative, intellec-tually stimulating atmosphere amongst thefaculty and students.

Her resulting dissertation, AdolescentsInvolved in Decision Making: Clinic Conver-sations about Human Papillomavirus and

Vaccination, examines the participation ofhealthy adolescents, in conjunction withtheir parents and physician, in the decisionto take an optional vaccine preventing HPVinfections that cause adult cancers. The vac-cines are specifically targeted to prevent

two strains that cause 70 percent of all cer-vical cancer in adult women, and twostrains that cause 90 percent of the genitalwarts in humans.

Through the course of her research,Wander surveyed more than 400 male andfemale adolescents, and their parents, inwhat she terms an academically affiliatedadolescent medical practice, when the chil-dren visited for healthy checkups.

Wander would now like to utilize her re-search in an effort to increase the vaccina-tion rate amongst adolescents.

She says that, while her study focuses on

adolescents during healthy visits, there isan underserved adolescent population thatdoesnt receive health care. She would alsolike to disseminate information to help pre-pare adolescents to become active agents intheir own health-care decisions.

Every four years, there is a big,

big election in New Jersey that

costs candidates lots and lots of

    money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-

vertise hard and heavy throughout the

state, spending boatloads of cash in the

New York City and Philadelphia metro

markets. This years election for Garden State

governor is extra special because the

    incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought

to be a leading candidate for the Re-

    public nomination for president in

    2016.

Before that is a possibility, though,

he will have to beat his Democratic op-

ponent in New Jersey this November. And, even before that, hell have to

    defeat his Republican opposition for

    the gubernatorial nomination, Seth

    Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer

    and political veteran.

While the focus of this election has

already been on Christie and top Dem-ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both

must make it through next Tuesdays

Primary Election before they can com-

pletely turn their focus to Novembers

    General Election.

Buono, a state senator from Newark

who has been representing the 18th

    Legislative District since 2002, will

square off against Troy Webster, an

aide to the mayor of East Orange.

If Buono and Christie succeed next

week, as many expect, theyll officially

turn their focus on each other, letting

    the money, and muckraking, fly.

Both parties have already begun tel-

evision ad campaigns, and the number

of ads and ferocity of the content will

surely pick up as Novembers election

    approaches.

Its an unfortunate reality of cur-

    rent-day electioneering, especially in

this state. So expect your TV sets, your radios

and your newspapers to be filled with

    political advertisements over the next

six months until an official governor is

    named.

In the meantime, get out and vote in

    the Primary Election next Tuesday,

June 4, if youre a registered Republi-

can or Democrat. In addition to the gubernatorial elec-

tion, there are also elections for the

    General Assembly, state Senate and

local governing bodies. This is your

first chance to let your voice be heard.

Campaign season has begunWith Primary Elections next week, let the advertising begin

    Your thoughts

Do you plan to vote in next TuesdaysPrimary Election? If so, why? If not, why? Send us your thoughts in a letterto the editor.

    MAY 29-JUNE 4, 2013THE CHERRY HILL SUN 7

    Camden County Police

    Department hits the streets

    On May 1, the

    Camden County

    Police Depart-

    ment officiallystarted its patrols

    walking the beat

    throughout the

    neighborhoods of

    Camden City. This

    initiative, which

    was created by the

    Freeholder Board more than two

years ago, has culminated in a ro-

    bust law enforcement agency

that is making an immediate im-

pact on the Countys most chal-

lenged municipality. After many long months of

    hard work, Governor Chris

Christie joined me at the swear-

    ing-in of Chief Scott Thomson

    and marking the official installa-

tion of the leader of our crime

    fighting organization. Since our

    original deployment date, the

    Camden County Police Depart-

ment has gotten back to basics by

putting police on foot, in neigh-

    borhoods and empowering the

community.Since that date the impact has

    been immediate and tangible and

    we have witnessed a significant

    downturn in gun related crime

from the areas where robust foot

    patrols are active. Nevertheless, we

still have not fully deployed all of

our officers and continue to grow

the department, which will be op-

    erating with 401 sworn officers.

    Walking through different

    neighborhoods with the Metro

Division, Ive met many resi-dents embracing the new police

presence on their block. In fact, I

heard a resident of the Fairview

neighborhood tell one of our po-

    lice officers, thank God youre

here. This has been a common

    refrain and the same sentiment

    Ive heard business owners make

    along the Haddon

    Avenue corridor

    in Parkside. In ad-

    dition, our surveil-lance equipment

    has not picked up

    a gun shot in the

    area since our de-

    ployment into

    these pinpointed

    neighborhoods.

    Overall, our main objective

was achieved as we are providing

    the resources and capacity that

    Camden City needs to put

    guardians on every block

throughout its network of neigh-borhoods. These resources will

provide a safer city, cut the de-

mand for narcotics and most im-

    portantly allow children to play

in the parks and streets that used

to be populated by thugs and

    hooligans.

In regards to funding, as Ive

    said before, and with Gov.

    Christie, Sen Norcross and

Mayor Redd by my side, this new

    law enforcement agency is being

paid for by the City of Camdenand supplemented by state aid.

This shared service will not cost

    County property taxpayers any

    additional money.

The goal of the department is

to join with residents in trans-

    forming the City and making

Camden County a safer place to

live, work and raise a family. That

said, with a very small sample

    size, we are making significant

    progress towards that goal and

delivering public safety servicesin a more effective manner.

    If you want more information

on the new department go to

    www.CamdenCountyPD.org or

    like them at www.face-

    book.com/camdencountypd and

the lifeblood of most of our envi-ronmental preservation efforts, said Bridget Palmer, townshipcommunications director. Ourtrails have been enhanced dra-matically in the last several years, and it's been almost entirely due

to the efforts of CHEB, which isan all-volunteer organization. This is the third year the town-

ship will be involved with the day.

We hope that if they see theirpublic lands they would supportthe acquisition of new open landsand public lands, Gorman said.

Gorman noticed people hadcreated their own paths, when thetownship received a grant; it fullyopened the provided trails andclosed the others.

According to Palmer, volun-teers will be installing closed-habitat restoration signposts on

Nature Trail and Tan Trail, fill-ing in wood chips in the gullynext to the Croft Nature Trailnext to the volunteer path, in-

stalling driveway pavers, wood-chipping the Purple Trail andplacing mulch around trees infront of the Croft Farm house.

Theres this one section ofpath that people are using, and wewant to put up a sign that sayshabitat restoration, Gormansaid.

We want to stabilize the area.We want to close off that area andkeep people on the trail.

portance of public space lands.According to AmericanHik-

ing.org, the day will be aboutmaintaining and improving trailsin Cherry Hill.

It will also teach the role trailsplay in connecting people with

    nature.National Trail Day isnt about

one day, Gorman said; its about

maintaining the habitat year-round and continuing to have theopportunity to volunteer eachmonth.

This isnt the only time we or-

ganize events for people to comeout and check out and work onthe trails, Gorman said.

We also do Public Lands Day,which is in September, and wefocus on why its important to theenvironment to maintain thesetrails properly.

Gorman emphasized the needfor walkers to stay on the traillaid out, to maintain the habitatas it is and not destroy it fur-ther. Additionally, he is constant-ly surprised by the number of

residents who didnt know aboutthe trails available in Cherry Hill.

We have a spring and fall festi-val, and we always have a booththere to tell residents about thetrails, Gorman said.

He notes residents interestedin looking into the trails canGoogle Cherry Hill Trails in ad-dition to joining the Trail Crew towork on different trails.

We want to tell them theresan opportunity every month tocome to the trails and do commu-nity service on the trails we havethroughout the township, Gor-man said.

I think people who haven't hada chance to explore our trails willbe surprised at how peaceful andbeautiful our trails are, Palmersaid.

It's hard to remember, some-times, in the traffic and noise ofsuch a big town, that we havesome amazing natural resourcesright in our backyards.

Officials to continue to monitoruse of Country Club land

thousands of Cherry Hill andCamden County residents. Thereason the county entered thebidding on this parcel was to saveit for perpetuity and make sure itstays green for generations ofresidents to come. Any effort todevelop this property beyondopen space will be met with sub-stantial opposition given sensi-tive environmental and capacityissues.

According to the county re-lease, the freeholder board willcontinue to work to save the in-tegrity of the property and pre-serve the parcel in the same wayit has existed over the last 100years.

    Regardless of the auction, I

    still believe this natural area

should stay a golf course or be-come a park that would be a bene-fit to everyone in the county,Nash said.

Officials with First Mont-gomery Group could not bereached for comment.

According to the county re-lease, Mayor Chuck Cahn was de-finitive in his support for the zon-ing of the property and thepreservation of the land.

Together with the county, weput our best foot forward in try-ing to acquire the property. I amdisheartened by the outcome, butour position has not changed:council and I do not want to seethis site developed, and we willnot support any change in zon-ing, Cahn said in the county re-lease.

The mayor went on to thankthe other bidders who came to

the table with the best interests of

the community in mind and whoshared the freeholders and town-ships common goal of protectingthe important property fromcommercial or residential devel-opment, the county release said.

In addition, Council PresidentDave Fleisher voiced the localgoverning bodys support for thecurrent zoning.

Township council standssquarely with the mayor againstany change in zoning and still be-lieves this parcel should remainas open space, Fleisher said.

The opportunity to maintainthe course was as much a matterof pride as it was an opportunityto ensure the integrity of thecourse is maintained to the high-est possible standards, The Vil-lage at Woodcrest website said.
