Mayor Bernie Platt made a sur-prising announcement recentlythat he would not seek re-electionthis fall. It wasnt long before twopolitical candidates emerged toenter the race for the top spot.

Democrat Chuck Cahn and Re-publican Stephen Buividas an-nounced their candidacy lastweek. Even with varying politicalagendas, the two candidates havesomething in common. Both wereborn and raised in Cherry Hilland said they have a strong desire

to serve the community that hasserved them for many years.

Its really a great place tolive, Buividas said.

Buividas, 42, spent his under-graduate career studying Politi-

Last summer, a group of resi-dents in Merchantville startedthinking about where their chil-dren would go to high school inthe future. A few had moved intothe borough recently and were be-ginning to look deeper into the ed-ucational options for their fami-lies.

The borough is home to about3,800 residents, Mayor FrankNorth said, and has one K-8school.

Currently, the school has asending/receiving agreementwith Pennsauken High School.

North said many parentschoose to send their students toregional private schools in thearea.

Dialogue began to surfacemore seriously when residentsconsidered the potential for Mer-chantville students to attend theneighboring Cherry Hill highschools, North said.

Cherry Hill and Merchantvillehad discussed a potential mergein the past.

The merge could potentially in-clude a complete fusion of thetwo municipalities, includingschools, government, police, fire, trash and recycling, along with

    other township entities and serv-ices.

Township and borough offi-cials from both Cherry Hill andMerchantville met with state Sen.Jim Beach last summer to talktheoretically about an in-depthstudy of what implications a po-tential merger would have onboth municipalities, Cherry HillTownship spokesman DanKeashen said.

We discussed Merchantvillebecoming a section of CherryHill, Keashen said. These sig-nificant questions need to beasked statewide. Property taxesare so high in New Jersey. Itspeaks directly to the broken upland masses.

Merchantville residents signeda petition and formed a commit-tee to study the pros and cons of apotential merger, North said.

Keashen said Cherry Hill hasnot yet created a formal commit-tee to look into the matter, but isinterested in doing so.

Wed sit down to do research

to see what technically needs tobe done, Keashen said.

Meanwhile, a bill that wouldallow residents of both towns tovote for or against the merge sitson Gov. Christies desk awaiting

The budget proposal before vot-ers on April 27 reduces the schooltax levy by $500,000.

The proposed levy is $3.4 mil-lion below the state-mandatedlevy cap and just 1.9% more thanit was three years ago.

This is less than half the

Philadelphia area inflation rateover that same three-year period.

The proposed budget is 2.1 per-cent less than it was in 2008-2009and 2.6 percent less than 2009-2010.

These are encouraging num-bers for our taxpayers, whoshould be further buoyed by thecost-containment strategies thathave helped the district drivedown spending in the past threeyears and reduce the levy for 2011-2012. For example:n $2.5 million saved in the cur-

rent school year and $4 million inprojected savings for next year bymoving all district employeesinto the State Employees Health

Benefits Plan.n More than $700,000 saved byreducing the number of out-of-district placements and return-ing those students to our schools.n $202,000 in prescription plan

rebates realized through self-in-sured prescription coverage.n $170,000 saved through an

agreement with the CamdenCounty Educational ServicesCommission for nonpublic trans-portation routes.n $169,000 in FEMA reimburse-

ments for snow removal during2009-2010.n $97,261 in workers compensa-

tion credit for the 2009-2010 year.n $90,000 in transportation sav-

ings by reducing the ExtendedSchool Year program to four days.n $80,000 in energy audit reim-

    bursements.Weve cut our monthly tele-

phone costs in half by moving toa new district-wide telephone sys-tem.

    We share trash and recycling

    services with Cherryship.

Weve realized signings through cooperchasing of supplies services.

    Weve automated tracking and substit

Weve reduced admpositions at the centraing levels.

After graduating from Rutgerswith a degree in Economics andBusiness Administration, Cahnworked at his fathers business,Stewart Industries, a documentimaging company. Cahn took overthe business and transformedand expanded the company, hesaid. After 30 years with the com-pany, Cahn sold the business in2007. Cahn is now a partner inCKS Real Estate Holdings, LLC, aregional real estate investment

company.Buividas, said Platts an-nouncement coincided well withhis own timeline to enter the po-litical realm.

I always wanted to be in poli-tics, it was just never the righttime until now, he said.

Buividas said his dreams of be-coming mayor began in the sixthgrade.

As a young guy, I always want-ed to run and always envisionedmyself being the Cherry Hill

Mayor, Buividas said.Cahn, 56, said the mayors an-

nouncement inspired him to run.He said he had never thought ofserving in public office until he

heard Platts decision. After the mayors announce-

ment, Cahn said, he was talkingto his wife about what kind ofperson Cherry Hill needs to runthe town. Cahns wife suggestedthat the mayor be someone wholoves his or her community, butalso has a business sense.

I started thinking about it andthought, It does sound like me.The idea of holding a public of-fice had been the furthest thingfrom my mind, Cahn said.

Cahn met his friend SusanBass Levin, a former Cherry Hillmayor, for breakfast. Cahn toldLevin his ideas for the townshipand she suggested that he run for

mayor, he said. From there, Cahnsaid, he met with the Cherry HillDemocratic Committee, whichendorsed him as its mayoral can-didate.

Im not a politician, Im a busi-nessman, but a compassionatebusinessman. Im willing to maketough decisions and I have to becreative, Cahn said. Im lookingfor smart ways to improve servic-es while keeping an eye on the

bottom line. One of Buividas main priori-

ties, should he be elected, is to

focus on the budget and the town-ships spending.

Spending is still an issue. TheDemocrats are still spendingmoney, Buividas said. Its notthe time to spend. Its not right topoint fingers at the state. Thestate gives us what they can,Buividas said.

Cahn said he would aim to runthe township like a business. Hisgoal as mayor, he added, would beto get Cherry Hill somewhere onall residents list of priorities.

When I ask people to list theirtop 10 priorities in life, the town-ship probably isnt one of them.People usually say their health, their family, and their life. But

community is in every one ofthose priorities, Cahn said. Itsnot about individuals, its aboutthe community coming together.

Currently, council is controlledby the Democratic Party and hasbeen in control for years.

Despite the influence Democ-rats have had on politics over the

years, Buividas said he is excitedto provide a different political op-tion for residents.

I think people are tired ofDemocratic control, he said. Iembrace it. Republican, Democ-rat, its irrelevant. People aretired year after year of taxes in-creasing.

Cahn said he is focused onmaking prudent financial deci-sions for the township, as well.

People want results. Thistown demands a high level ofservices. I plan to give as much asI can, Cahn said.

Both candidates said they arebeginning to meet more neigh-bors and community group lead-

ers and are focusing their atten-tion on outreach.Cahn said he has the time and

energy to dedicate to serving thecommunity. He said he is meetinggroups and residents and reach-ing out to his neighbors.

Buividas said he, too, is begin-ning to meet with residents andlisten to their concerns. Buividas,if elected, pledged to hold twoopen office hours every Mondayto meet with residents.

Along with the mayoral candi-dates, six residents have emergedfor three open council seats.

Current council membersJohn Amato and Sara Lipsett, along with Melinda Kane will runon the Democratic ticket. Kane isthe mother of Jeremy Kane, who

On Wednesday, April 27, voterswill elect four members to theCherry Hill Board of Education;three members with three-yearterms and one member with atwo-year term.

Candidates for the three-yearterms include Andrew Behrend,Valery Boyarsky, J. Barry Dickin-son, Eric Goodwin, Ryan Green,Seth Klukoff, Carol Matlack andMeng Zhang.

Voters will also approve ordeny the 2011-2012 budget, whichincludes a $500,000 reduction inthe tax levy.

Assistant superintendent andbusiness/board secretary JamesDeveraux said the levy is $3.4 mil-lion below the state-mandatedlevy cap of $150,204,439.

Despite a smaller tax levy, resi-dents will still see a tax increase.Deveraux stated that the increaseis due entirely to the $60 million

decline in township ratables. The average assessed home at$140,000 will see an approximateincrease of $107 in their tax bill.

Unfortunately, the taxpayersare still feeling an increase thisyear, which is due in large part to

the reduction of tax ratables. While down $60 million dollarsfor the current year, they aredown about $91 million dollarsover the three-year period. Thatsa very big deal, Deveraux said.So its painful to have a goodyear like we have and not beingable to show it to the taxpayers,

especially when its somethingoutside of our control. So thisyear has been really unique insome ways.

    Already?Presidential politics? Now? Ick

    S

eriously. People are talking about running for president?

In April? 2011? We have to start this now? We cant get

more Charlie Sheen/lost snake coverage for at least a fewmore weeks? Just about anything is better than listening to

    months of campaign gibberish.

    Politicians and other POTUS

    wanna-bes usually start off

with a Who, me? kind of false

    modesty. Then they announce

    theyre thinking about run-

ning. Then they form an ex-

    ploratory committee. Then,

like theyre giving us all some kind of early birthday present,

they declare that they, after much soul-searching and at the urg-

ing of millions of working men, women, children and dogs, in-

deed will selflessly, albeit reluctantly and at great personal sac-

rifice, toss their hat into the ring.

Oh, please. The Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary

are months away. Why all the drama now? Yes, we know it takes

a good bit of planning to run a presidential campaign. But

please spare us the soap operas this far in advance of anyone

    actually casting a vote.

Were all for spirited debate of the issues at all levels of gov-

ernment. Its democracy in action. Its the way people get their

views across, figure out which candidates to support and, in the

end, with any luck, solve some problems.

    Thats honest, responsible campaigning/governing. Useful

stuff. Meaningful stuff. Stuff people can sink their teeth into,

but stuff that usually happens closer to when an election is

about to take place or when no election is approaching and

politicians are doing their jobs you know, governing.

What are we going to be subjected to for the next eight or so

months from these presidential hopefuls? Announcements of

staffing hires and fires? Fund-raising pleas? Photo-ops?

Heres a tip: Regular people dont care about this stuff. At

    least not now.
