November & December wind up the year. The holidays instruct us to celebrate one another and the larger concepts of love and enlightenment. So these are fitting months to wind down what has been a true labor of love. I wanted to bring the Delmarva Peninsula together to celebrate history, community and culture through this magazine.My notion was that if I supported area events and nonprofits through the free listings and calendar, they might in turn support us allowing us to grow and do more good. In a better economy this may have been the case. But as organizations and towns budgets are reduced we have struggled to continue. Some folks were happy to step up to pay a dollar per issue for this important resource, but many felt angry that it was no longer free to take. This will be our last issue. Many thanks to our wonderful advertisers that have stepped up to help with the expenses of creating this magazine for the last five years. Other things we may take for granted are also teetering in this challenging economy. It is always a jolt to see a closed store front or hear dead air where a radio station once played wonderful music for “free.” But then of course nothing is really free. The tab must always be paid by someone. The vessel must be refilled to continue to nourish. Civilizations are built, not carried away piece by piece.

w h a t ’ s n ex tfor our local public radio stations . . .For the last 25 years we have been rich in good public radio. But too much of a good thing can go bad. Currently there are 7 NPR affiliates operating on Delmarva, watering down loyalties and financial support for our original local stations.

Both WESM ( jazz)and WSCL (classical)

launched in 1987.Each are backed by

local universities.

While both carry NPR news and other nationally syndicated programing, the

flavor of WESM caters to jazz, blues and world music affectionatos, while

WSCL appeals to a more classical crowd. (WSDL, launched in 1997 is pure talk radio and pulled listeners from both

stations, but as a sister station to WSCL strengthened membership for the

Salisbury based stations.

WSCL/WSDL has offered locally produced programing in the past, but is exploring new content options in an effort to engage new listeners and cut costs. WSCL may replace their locally produced classical shows with a syndicated feed, known as Classical 24. WESM 91.3 FM still offers a diverse array of locally-hosted live shows by on-air announcers such as “Morning, Evening Jazz and Jazzology.”Angel Resto Jr. stirs up an amazing world mix Sundays at 6pm wth “Radio Mundo” followed by the syndicated programs: “Afro-pop” and “The Putamayo World Music Hour.” Some of the local hosts have been at the wheel since their shows began: “Stairway To Heaven” (Gospel Music ) 6am to noon Sundays with volunteer Marian Birkhead (25 years), Yancy Carrigan’s “Wax Museum and Morning Jazz” (24 years)and Molly (Bridget Weaver) has volunteered for Friday “Morning Jazz” for 16 years.) WESM maintains a commitment to public service programs that cater to a wide swath of the community, through shows such as “Latino USA, Democracy Now, The Tavis Smiley Show” and the environmental affairs show “Sierra Club Radio.” WESM is one of the few jazz stations in the Mid-Atlantic. We have been lucky to have these stations to brighten our days for the last 25 years. WSCL/WSDL is currently losing it’s home at Salisbury University and has faced transmitter challenges reducing its airspace. continued page 54

In the last 5 years WAMU from the Washington metro area entered the market followed by several other NPR spin offs. Unfortunately NPR programming is not limited exclusively to existing stations, causing a glut in redundant programing over the airwaves. While this can be useful for listeners that miss “Marketplace” or another show and simply tune the dial to catch the show on another station, these shows are very expensive for the stations to carry.

Another concern regarding the future of this station is increased com-petition. Locally-based NPR stations on Delmarva are facing increased pressure from out-of-market NPR stations from Washington, Baltimore and Norfolk. Just as an example, the Washington, DC metro area has a population of 5.6 million people, and has only one NPR station. By contrast, the entire Delmarva Peninsula, with a population of approxi-mately 700,000 people, currently has a total of seven NPR station, (with 5 located on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland alone.) As a result, local stations with fewer resources are forced to compete for the same dollars as well-funded out-of-market stations that are already serving large audiences. But at the end of the day, it’s our local stakeholders – our listeners, our institution (UMES), and our leaders that will ensure our continued success. Even valued local resources can go away, if not supported by its community base. So while we’re sorry to see the Chesapeake East Calendar Guide end its publication, it’s a reminder that any resource that is not adequately supported by the community, will ultimately disappear. And I think that is a shame. But we at WESM 91.3 FM remain hopeful for a bright and better future – with the support of good people that care.”

As you may already be aware, funding for public radio is under threat in Congress – the very funding we need to survive. Thankfully WESM receives vital support from our university, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which we are very grateful to receive. However, signifi-cant financial support also comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides vitally impor-tant federal grants.

Both stations operate on constraining budgets and are heavily dependent on their dedicated volunteers, staff and community fund raising. General manager Stephen A. Williams of WESM elaborates;
