read all about it.....

July is when home becomes your oasis, rather than a launch pad. T h e S u m m e r H o u s e

In the summer house the windows remain openso the wind may rearrange papers and the curtains can dance.

There is a fresh bouquet on the table,a humming fan, small birds calling

and no covers on the bed.

In the summer house, clean is as you like it.Shoes wait patiently without takers,

towels are rarely folded, the cat is on the counter

& books are left cracked open mid-story.

In the summer house, any day is vacation if you declare it sowear as little as possible,

play music you haven’t heard for a while,or write a poem if you feel like it.

Enjoy the heat & eat ice cream for breakfast.

In summer one should not move too fastbecause the sky is lovely & there are enough hours in the day.

Here’s to a fresh sprig of mint in your iced tea, leaving work early &

late dish to pass dinners in the yard with friends who laugh loudly.

that’s what I’m doing... Dana Simson

Try Family Fun Night this summer...Over scheduling has become one of the latest family concerns in America. When we don’t have time to connect, we lose ourselves, our attachment, con-cern and basic communication with the very ones we say we love the most. One solution, holding family meetings or a family fun night. Why? Research shows that holding regular family meetings reconnects family members allowing a sense of belonging. It also opens communication, builds concern and cooperation with each other. In addition it’s a time to share, problem solve, negotiate, and build mutual respect, and helps build accountability.

Family meetings can also turn into family fun nights. Rotating the family meeting with a family fun night is a great way to keep it interesting and for each mem-

ber to participate in choosing the activities or topics of discussion. Family Fun Night can consist of easy, low to no cost games, activities or outings. Try some of these suggestions.

1- A wilderness walk.2- A bike ride.3- Art night, painting, coloring, noodle art, tie-dying, or collages to name a few. 4- Baking or cooking.5- Board games.6- Pick a Movie Night.7- Camp outside.8- Beach night.9- Charades.10- Scrap Book family photos of trips, holidays, events.

Some family meeting/fun night guidelines:1- Try to pick and time and stick to it. Consistency will build participation and cooperation. 2- Set a time limit. It’s important for everyone to know when meetings start and when they are going to be over. 3- Keep it positive.4- Give each member of the family a chance to offer ideas and share feelings.5- Steer clear of making it a “gripe” session. Facilitate problem solving and model respectful feedback and suggestions.6- Plan meetings or fun night to meet interest and task for all age groups.7- Open and close with a group circle, making suggestions and offering reflection.8- Parents are not the only ones in charge. What i s a R i v e r k e e p e r?A Riverkeeper is a full-time advocate for a body of water and its surrounding community. Each Riverkeeper is an affiliate of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a grassroots advocacy organization founded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

A coalition of sixteen independent Waterkeeper programs are working to protect and restore the Chesapeake and Coastal

Bays and their tributaries. These skilled environmentalists are equal parts scientist, lawyer, investigator, educator and advocate. They advocate compliance with environmental

laws, respond to citizen complaints, identify problems that affect their waterbodies and devise appropriate remedies

to address these problems. Each Riverkeeper has a boat -- ranging in size from a canoe to a research vessel -- to patrol

his or her waterway. In fact, Riverkeepers spend much of their time out on the water, monitoring water quality, surveying

the shoreline or talking with citizens. To fcontact your local Riverkeeper, visit the Waterkeeper Alliance webpage,

waterwaterWe All Live Down Stream. There are civilians all over this country engaged in the restoration & protection of area waterways.Riverwatchers include professional scientists, school groups and citizens who are concerned about water quality issues. They collect water quality data throughout the year and submit their results to create a data base detailing a record of a water body’s health. Water, and it’s content, whether on the Chesapeake Bay, seaside, or in our ponds, creeks and rivers is integral to maintaining our way of life here on Delmarva. There are local groups working to increase public awareness of local water quality issues and promote stewardship through public educa-tion and involvement. However each has a focus area leaving large parts of our Peninsula from Delaware south to Virginia unmonitored. Researching this article has prompted me begin to encourage my neighbors to create a Manokin/ Annemessex River Watchers, where a large Prison facility and the Somerset County landfill are upstream.Every neighborhood and town should be concerned about the water flowing into and through it. On a larger scale, the Chesapeake Bay is downstream from some large metropolitan and industrial areas, big agriculture and some worrisome practices like “fracking”. Noxious chemicals used in releasing natural gas from shale contaminate ground water that flows into Pennsylvania’s rivers make their way down the Susquehanna to our precious bay. Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy Tim Junkin . Founder & Executive Director Dedicated to the restoration and protection of the waterways that comprise the Choptank River watershed, Eastern Bay, and the Miles and Wye Rivers. It employs an executive director and two full time Riverkeepers: scientist/advo-cates fighting at every level for our waterways. * Water clarity is very poor and continues to decline. Turbidity testing measures the ability of light to pass through water. Over 90% of recent measurements show poor water clarity. Nitrogen pollution is over 4 times the acceptable levels, which promotes excessive algae growth. Algae decomposes when it dies, sucking oxygen out of the water and creating dead zones. Phosphorus pollution is over two times the acceptable levels, as with nitrogen, this causes unhealthy algae growth, poor water clarity, an oxygen-dead zones, a process called eutrophication. Inadequate oxygen levels are common. Dissolved oxygen is essential to all aquatic life. We are nearing a crisis threshold where the rivers we cherish may no longer support aquatic life.Grow Your Own Oysters: Midshore Riverkeeper Conservancy will deliver floats with 500 spat (baby oysters) for $200 each. 45waterwaterWicomico Creekwatchers ProgramJudith Stribling . Professor Salisbury Univ. Dept. of Biological Sciences * Water quality in the Wicomico River is generally poor. The volunteer Wicomico Creekwatchers monitor the river from its upper ponds and tributaries to the mouth near Mount Vernon. Every two weeks, they measure water clarity, salinity, pH, nitrogen and phosphorus, and algae abundance. In 2010, many indicators improved slightly, but most were still in the unhealthy range. What you can do: • Use lawn chemicals and fertilizers sparingly and only as directed • Create “buffers”—areas that will soak up excess rain water—by planting native trees, shrubs and grasses • Use rain barrels to catch rain water from your roof and plant rain gardens to trap it on the ground • Become a Creekwatcher! Join or start a group in your area. The 2010 Wicomico Creekwatchers report is at salisbury.edu/wicomicocreekwatchers

Nanticoke Watershed AllianceE B James . Executive Director * The Nanticoke River begins its journey in southern Delaware, flowing southwest to the Chesapeake Bay through the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. One of the Chesapeake’s healthiest rivers, its 725,000-acre watershed provides excellent habitat of national significance for many threatened plants and animals. The Nanticoke is the most biologi-cally diverse watershed on Delmarva. It is free of dams and supports excellent fisheries. It has a rich history, properties on the National Register of Historic Places, and the northernmost stands of bald cypress on the Atlantic Coast. It also has the highest concentration of bald eagles in the northeastern United States. The Alliance is still recruiting Creekwatchers who are able to monitor in Delaware during the 2011 sampling season. Beth Wasden Volunteer coordinator 443.944.1175 Email . Update: Bay cleanup plan This summer, state officials will determine the details of Maryland’s new Chesapeake Bay restoration plan, aimed at reducing pollution to safe levels over the next decade. Last year, in compliance with a federal effort to clean the Bay, Gov. Martin O’Malley offered a statewide plan. Now, each county must compose its own unique strategy. (translation: Talk . No Action.)

Call your community officials to find out the status of your local watershed implementation plan.

They have deadlines to meet.“After 27 years of Bay cleanup, it’s clear that business as usual is not enough,” said Tommy

Landers, policy advocate for Environment Maryland. “We need enforceable limits on all pollution sources, especially corporate

agribusiness and industrial megafarms.”

Joining forces to bring offshore wind power to MarylandGov. Martin O’Malley was the lead sponsor of this year’s bill to develop off-shore wind power. Along with Sen. Paul Pinsky (Prince George’s) and Del. Tom Hucker (Montgomery). A report compiled by Environment Maryland and the United Steel-workers, found that 1,100 companies in Maryland, employing 27,000 people, already do the type of work that is needed to build offshore wind turbines. Construction of a wind farm is expected to create 2,000 construction jobs and 400 long-term jobs. Offshore wind power produces more power because the wind is stronger in the ocean and the turbines can be bigger than those on land. This offshore wind farm will produce 10 times as much power as the sole existing on-land wind farm in Garrett County. Placed 10 miles offshore, they will be barely visiable from the beach on a clear day, generating pollution-free electricity for Maryland homes and businesses.

waterwaterwawaterwaterwawaterwater- Limits on fertilizer will ease dead zone New legislation to make urban fertilizer more environmentally friendly will reduce the flow of nutrient pollution into the Chesapeake Bay. Residential lawns, athletic fields and golf courses cover more than one-fifth of the state, in combination with other forms of urban and suburban development, are one of the Bay’s biggest pollution sources, providing a conduit for fertilizer and toxic chemicals to flow into our waters. Fertilizer containing nitrogen and phosphorus, which sap the Bay of oxygen and lead to annual dead zones, will be out-lawed. environmentmaryland.org

steal this idea.... Do It Yourself Equipment:

* Secchi Disk (make it according to the diagram below * Calibrated line * View scope (make it below) * Two spring clip clothespins * Field data sheet and pencils

The Secchi disk is used to measure the depth that a person can see into the water (transparency). The Secchi disk transparency is somewhat subjective and also affected by light and waves. To minimize these individual differences, MassWWP requires that you use a viewscope. Your measurements should be taken between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. over the summer months.

If possible, a team of two should perform the Secchi disk measurement. One team member should lower the Secchi disk on the sunny side of the boat. The other team member should submerse the end of the viewscope and watch the lowering of the Secchi disk. When the disk just disappears, a clothespin should be clipped on the calibrated line at the water’s surface. The disk should be lowered another one or two feet and then slowly brought up toward the surface until it can just be seen again. Another clothespin should be clipped on the line at the water’s surface. The Secchi disk depth is the average of these two measure-ments to the nearest tenth of a meter.Repeat the measurement with the team members reversing roles. Record the Secchi disk reading of each viewscope operator. Average the two measurements and record on the field data sheet.

come on’ down!

water rulesEvery year around this time I say- “well here we are in the summer drought.” The lawn withers, lettuce bolts and the trees bail excess fruit off their stressed branches. The bad news is, we were crazy dry in June! I transplanted two highly coveted Kiwi plants (one male/one female; you need both) and even with my dedicated watering, both turned into curled parchment love letters to the elegant vines they would never be. I went to www.drought.unl.edu to get my garden fortune told and they say “drought will persist with some improvement.” So keep your watering wands steady. In the face of few gathering clouds, how does one water most economically? I have reached this time intensive conclusion...Drum roll please!Hold On! To build suspense, here are those that did not win:soaker hoses- weepy, complaining long black snakelike things you trip over at night that create a great wet splotch nourishing plants & weeds alike.sprinkler hoses- it may be me, but someone put those evenly spaced sprinkle holes precisely where my plants aren’t.hose & spray-pretty ok, if you don’t knock the bejesus out of your pepper plant with the turbo stream. Also this method involves a lot of standing and staring at other things that need doing.

water drip bottles- tidy, water goes right where you want in a slow steady stream. Idyllic but those plastic milk & soda bottles all require filling. The garden gets incrementally watered (well) and you do little annoying house or weeding chores that are lovely to scratch off your list.Smart Garden drought tipsPlant Drought Tolerant Vegetables Some vegetables don’t need as much water as others:Amaranth, cow beans, corn, mustard greens, purlane, spinach, tomatoes, chard.Mulch & use Compost. 2-3 inches, and create a bowl dipping down toward plant.Double or Triple Dig between plantings: aerates your soil making it easier for the roots of your plants to grow down, to pick up the water that is already deep in the soil.
