CHESHIRE CHAPTERS ERASED FROM 1780. (SEE 13. 2. 1 J. ARMSTRONG)

N.B. PRIOR TO THE UNION OF THE TWO GRAND CHAPTERS IN 1817 , THERE WERE SEVEN ROYAL ARCH CHAPTERS OPERATING IN CHESHIRE. SUPREME GRAND CHAPTER DECREED THAT HENCEFORTH , ALL CHAPTERS MUST BE ATTACHED TO A CRAFT LODGE. THIS HAD ALREADY BEEN THE NORM WITH “MODERN” CRAFT LODGES BUT NOT IN THE CASE OF THE “ANTIENT” CRAFT LODGES. IT WAS NOT UNTIL 1869 (WHEN THE PROVINCIAL GRAND CHAPTER OF CHESHIRE WAS FORMED ), THAT SUCH REGULARITY PREVAILED. IT IS THEREFORE DIFFICULT TO ANALYZE “ERASURES” PRIOR TO 1869 , WHEN THERE WERE EIGHTEEN CHAPTERS IN CHESHIRE. IT IS HOWEVER CERTAIN THAT ST.MICHAEL’S CHAPTER No. 24 (CHESTER) , ALTHOUGH BY FAR THE OLDEST KNOWN IN CHESHIRE, WAS SAID TO BE “IRREGULAR” AND WAS NOT ADOPTED BY ROYAL CHESTER LODGE OR ITS SUCCESSOR CESTRIAN.
