WELCOME MESSAGES 3 CIVIC PROPERTIES COMMINSSION CHARIMAN’S MESSAGE I am pleased on behalf of the Civic Properties Commission to present to you this guide for leisure time activities for the 2011 / 2012 Fall – Winter season. Last year saw the completion of the renovations at the Recreation Complex and the addition of the waterslide mid Fall 2010. Also included in this brochure on the back cover are the schedule and programs of the Chetwynd & District Library. I encourage all residents of Chetwynd and the surrounding area to make good use of the programs at the library and the Recreation Centre over the fall and winter months. Tim Caton, Director, Peace River Regional District Area “E” CIVIC PROPERTIES COMMISSION VICE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE We understand what it means to each of us to be healthy and fit, and we realize that it is almost impossible to truly enjoy one’s life if we do not have both of these. We also know that to stay healthy, we need to be both physically and mentally fit. Here at the Chetwynd and District Recreation Program our goal is to provide you the opportunity to stay both healthy and fit, mentally and physically. During the past few years we have spent a considerable amount of money and effort upgrading these facilities for your enjoyment, and now we are there. We now have more opportunities for you than ever before, and we invite you to join us in a variety of programs within our facility. And, as always, we continue to look for opportunities to improve our programs. We are open to new ideas and suggestions and look forward to your input. On behalf of the District of Chetwynd, I wish you good health and fitness and wish that the Recreation Department meets your expectations in providing recreation facilities and programs.

Evan Saugstad, Mayor, District of Chetwynd

18 AQUATICS CHETWYND LEISURE POOL

The Leisure Pool was built in 1990. In 2010, the Recreation Centre and Leisure Pool became one facility and a 3 story, 53 metre waterslide was added. The pool provides beach area from zero depth to 8 feet at the deepest part of the pool. There are 4 swimming lanes connected to the beach area to provide options for the whole family. Don’t forget to get wet under our mushroom fountain! The pool is equipped with a wave machine which runs during most public swims. The waterslide is open during evening and weekend public swim at no additional cost to swimmers. We provide 3 changerooms including a family changeroom. Lockers are available for a “loonie” or you can provide your own padlock and use a day locker. Monthly locker rentals are also available.

On deck we have a dry sauna at approx 110 degrees F, a large hottub at 104 degrees F and the main pool and waterslide kept at approx 86 degrees F. This fabulous waterslide opened in Dec 2010 and provides 53 metres of speed, thrills and water! Ideal for swimmers and non-swimmers as you land in a flume/channel not into the swimming pool! REGISTRATION FOR PROGRAMS AT THE LEISURE POOL

• Register for all aquatic programs at the front desk of the Leisure Pool – see pool schedule for operating hours

• Payment must accompany all registrations • Phone registrations for birthday parties, swim lessons and rentals taken with Visa • Swim Lesson registration is ongoing. Classes are usually available 2-3 months prior to the start

Benefits of a water workout Provides a low impact workout that will not strain the weight bearing joints or the back The working heart rate in water is lower than when training at a similar intensity on land You don’t need to know how to swim The resistance of the water ensures that the exerciser does not work beyond their ability - Even though you “sweat” during the workout, you will never feel sweaty!

TOT TIME Monday & Wednesday mornings at 10:30am, is set out especially for parents of children under the age of 5. Come spend quality time with your child and socialize with other parents. This is a non-structured swim time.

The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) is designed to let kids participate in activities similar to those of real lifeguards – in a safe, fun and controlled setting. But just as important, kids experience teamwork and a sense of belonging. They become part of a club, the Junior Lifeguard Club. The Junior Lifeguard Club is a unique program, designed as a ‘coaching’ environment of long-term goals and short-term ‘personal best’ achievements. Pre-requisites are: ability to swim 1 length of the pool, tread water for 1 minute and be 8 years +.

The Junior Lifeguard Club is a place for kids to: learn about lifesaving and lifeguarding, challenge themselves for personal bests, hang out and get fit, make friends and have a great time!
