PTA Seeks Nominating Committee Members
The Franklin PTA is seeking 3-4 parents to serve on the
annual Nominating Committee to put forth a slate of
nominees for the 2017-18 Executive Committee and PTA
Chairs. Generally, the committee holds one in-person
meeting, and then committee members reach out to
potential nominees via email or phone. The total time
commitment is about 3-4 hours. Ideally, there would be
representation from different feeder schools on the
committee, and incoming 6th grade parents are also
encouraged to participate. A common question is: "If I serve
on the committee, will I be expected to volunteer for an
open chair or board position?" The easy answer is NO! The

PRC Trips for 8th Graders this Spring
After taking off the winter months, our field trips to the PRC
will begin again in March. Our goal this school year is to
provide each 8th grade student the opportunity to volunteer
at Wheaton’s People’s Resource Center (PRC). This
valuable experience offers students a new appreciation for
helping others by giving back to their community. We are
seeking 8th grade parent volunteers to walk over to
the PRC with a Franklin staff member and 10 students on
select days throughout the school year.
The time commitment for volunteers is 8:00-12:00. Please
follow the link below to see a list of available dates through
the end of the school year, and to sign up to volunteer on a
trip.

On April 4, 2017, voters will see a referendum
question on the ballot. Here's a complete overview of
what it entails.
REFERENDUM APRIL 4
The Board of Education has voted to place a question on the
April 4, 2017 ballot asking to issue $132.5 million in bonds
in order to perform critical repairs and updates to 19 of the
20 schools in the district. The $132.5 million would be
combined with $22 million that the Board of Education has
committed from reserves and future budgets to fund all
projects at a total cost of $154.5 million. These funds would
include repairs and updates for Franklin Middle School and
Wheaton North High School, as well as most of the other
schools in the district. Below you will find pictures that
describe the scope of work at Franklin Middle School. (You
can enlarge each image by clicking on it.) Information about
Wheaton North High School, as well as the other schools,
can be found by CLICKING HERE.
This link will also direct you to other information about the
referendum including: financial information, the ballot
question, and information on upcoming informational

Dodgeball Tournament
On March 8-11, Franklin Middle School is hosting its Fifth
Annual Dodgeball Tournament. The theme of the 2017
event is “Service and Sacrifice.” With that theme in mind,
the 2017 tournament will benefit the following charities and
organizations: The DuPage Hundred Club; Team Red,
White and Blue; the Pat Tillman Foundation; and Franklin
Middle School.
The Hundred Club of DuPage was established in 1982 and
offers assistance to families of firefighters and law
enforcement killed, injured, or otherwise stricken while
working or living in DuPage County. Team Red, White and
Blue is a veterans assistance organization with the mission
of enriching the lives of America’s veterans by connecting
them to their community through physical and social
activity. Team RWB has done an amazing job of helping
veterans cope with PTSD and its mission is aligned with
Franklin Middle School’s emphasis on social/emotional
learning. One would be hard pressed to come up with an
example that better exemplifies “Service and Sacrifice” than
the story of Pat Tillman, the professional football player
who turned down a lucrative career and joined the U.S.
Army in 2002, but was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
The Pat Tillman Foundation invests in military veterans and
their spouses through academic scholarships with the
ultimate goal of building a community of leaders committed
to the service of others.
Key dates for Franklin students and parents will
be Thursday, March 9, and Friday March 10.
Franklin students will compete on March 9 in separate
brackets for boys and girls with a teacher of their choosing.
On Friday, March 10, Franklin students will compete in a
Co-Ed tournament followed by parents and adults playing
later Friday evening.
On Saturday, March 11, we will hold a tournament that is
open to 5th graders from all CUSD 200 elementary schools.
This event will take place in the early afternoon. A date and
time for high school students to play will be announced in
the near future.
Flyers and additional information will be out later this
week. Thank you and we look forward to your support! We
are certainly going to need plenty of volunteers ranging
from decorating, concessions, clean-up and more. Feel free
to call or email Mr. Kish with questions.
