Welcome Members and Guest, On behalf of the Southwest Suburban Dallas (SWSD) Chapter’s Executive Board, I would like to wish you a happy and healthy program year! In keeping with the core objectives of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. of creating a medium of contact for children which will stimulate growth and development --We WELCOME YOU to the first Annual SWSD Children’s Leadership Camp! This year the camp will focus on healthy lifestyles and prevention of childhood obesity and it’s immediate and long-term effects on health and our children’s well being. Immediate health effects:

• Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.3

• Obese adolescents are more likely to have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels indicate a high risk for development of diabetes.4,5

• Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.1,2,6

SWSD recognizes the sense of urgency and we have chosen not to be SILENT! Today is the culmination of partnering with wonderful organizations and individuals to deliver a highly impactful day of healthy living, financial literacy and leadership development, fused with exercise activity that feels more like old fashion fun—enjoy your day! Denise Wall, PhD President 2011-2013

Children’s Leadership Camp (CLC) promotes personal leadership and resiliency in youth and families through programs that inspire positive growth and change.

Our Mission -Through multi-generational and community engagement at the Children’s Leadership Camp is to educate, empower, and enlighten youth to become critical thinkers, responsible citizens, and embrace the traditions, histories, and cultures of their communities.

This Camp is designed for empowering Children and helping them develop tools to create an exciting future. Children will engage in exercises that are tailored to speak to their hearts and minds. Participants will participate in interactive presentations on critical thinking, leadership,

etiquette, communication and healthy life style skills as well as, creative activities that will help to build self-esteem, encourage positive communication between peers and provide the tools for conflict resolution.

The children attending will discover the value of working as a team with their peers. They will learn to trust others and develop trust-worthiness in themselves.

This Children’s Leadership Camp offers a chance for youth to learn more about the world around them, their peers and most importantly, themselves. This dynamic program features creative decision-making simulations that challenge young minds to solve problems and lead their peers through role-playing exercises in an energy-charged environment far from the traditional classroom experience. The Camp also includes sessions designed so that the participants can develop leadership skills, learn about financial literacy, and values affecting society and discuss health eating and living.

Sessions are provided by Guest Presenters, Vendors, Jack and Jill Mothers, Fathers, Associates, and Alumni

“To us as mothers, it [Jack and Jill] has become a means of furthering an inherent and natural desire …to bestow upon our children all the opportunities possible for a normal and graceful approach to a beautiful adulthood.” Marion Stubbs Thomas

According to national statistics, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled over the past three years. Today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

Founded by First Lady Michelle Obama, the Let’s Move initiative encourages children and youth to live a healthier lifestyle through proper nutrition and an adequate amount of exercise daily. In the Dallas area, some college students are doing their part to educate others about the dangers of obesity and the importance of moving.

Joining Cultures, the dance club at the West Campus of El Centro began a small Let’s Move initiative among college students. During the spring semester of 2011, these students provided free Zumba classes to college students and staff, and hosted their first Let’s Move event, which had college students and staff dancing in the halls of the college to popular artists such as Outkast and Beyonce.

In June, El Centro partnered with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and the North Texas Food Bank for a Community Move-a-Thon, where the college students taught area Girl Scouts how to stay active by dancing to the Let’s Move theme song, “Move Your Body.”

Club members will be present at the Southwest Suburban Dallas’ Children’s Leadership Camp to empower children to create a physical action plan at home, while learning a dance that will get them moving!

Physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. In combination with healthy eating, it can help prevent a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and stroke, which are the three leading causes of death. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bone, muscle and joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight.

If this sounds like a lot, consider that eight to 18 year old adolescents spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media including TV, computers, video games, cell phones and movies in a typical day, and only one-third of high school students get the recommended levels of physical activity. To increase physical activity, today’s children need safe routes to walk and bike ride to school, parks, playgrounds and community centers where they can play after school, and activities like sports, dance or fitness programs that are exciting and challenging enough to keep them engaged.

Let’s Move! aims to increase opportunities for kids to be physically active, both in and out of school and to create new opportunities for families to move together.
