Dear Families, Welcome back: This week we welcome back Helen Jellett who will continue

her role as business manager in our office. It is great to have Helen back although the change in the office arrangements while the refurb is on was something to get used to! Last Friday we thanked Kathy Smith for her work as a replacement for Helen. Kathy's knowledge and professionalism made Helen's leave a bit easier.

Public Speaking Awards: Two weeks ago Legacy Australia held the Geelong

Regional Finals of the Public Speaking Awards. There were 19 Students from Yr 7-9 from Government, Private and Catholic schools. It was remarkable to note that Chilwell had 5 of its ex-students representing 4 different school in the final. Congratulations go to these children and their families for supporting these children in this opportunity. We are always pleased to receive this type of feedback on the achievements of past students.

School Athletics: At last we were able to conduct the Athletics day. Thank

you to all for their patience, however if Landy field is deemed unsafe to compete then there is only one decision to be made re conducting any event. As always the children competed well and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to all staff led by Peter Blackall, parent helpers on events and to our supporters cheering from the side. It is a great day enjoyed by all.

3-Way Interviews. Hopefully all have booked in for their time. The meeting is

an opportunity for all children to continue the process of taking shared responsibility for their learning. It is an opportunity to share the successes and achievements as well as set goals for the next semester. These goals require involvement from children, staff and families. A real strength of Chilwell is the involvement of all in the learning process. Please be on time for your interview and discuss your child's report with them prior to the meeting.

Building Program: This continues at a rapid pace! Photos in last week’s

newsletter illustrated this point. The process has also unearthed some unknown facts about the building. Firstly we discovered 4 "trapdoors" which allows access to the "cellar" area under the building. One access point even has a ladder to allow access. Framing is happening so the outline of the new floor plan is visible. Our builders have been very flexible in accommodating our school, we are operating as normal as possible but some changes are inevitable. For example our PA system is working but access is very restricted, hence last week’s assembly did not involve our leaders or any children making announcements.

Reading Recovery: Families in Prep and Years 2 through to 6 may not realise that we run a very successful Reading Recovery program aimed at Year 1 pupils who have not quite "caught" onto some aspects of language (Reading and writing). These children have daily 1:1 half hour sessions with our Reading Recovery teacher, Rosemary Clifton. The program supports the child and daily "homework" is set so that families are also involved in the process. This is a fantastic resource that the school has and we are extremely proud of the progress made.

Traffic: The Winter months are upon us so we all must be mindful of the extra

care needed on our roads, both as a pedestrian and drivers. We talk to our children constantly about keeping safe around our precinct. We have large volumes of cafe/shop traffic, school buses and cars as well as pedestrians. Please ensure you reinforce safe road use - crossing at supervised crossings, at lights, at intersections and the need to watch and listen.

Reports: Staff have completed these and I am in the process of reading. It is

obvious that the progress and endeavour shown by our student is impressive. The reports will also highlight areas for future learning or concern. Our upcoming parent-teacher-student interviews will give an opportunity for the children and staff to discuss the report and goals set by each. The 15 minute interview/discussion will be led by the student initially but the staff will have input. The opportunity for parents to discuss issues just with the teacher is also available. Interview times are available for booking via PT online as of last week. Please jump on and book a suitable time. Thanks to those families who have already booked a time.

Birthdays. Happy birthday to the following students who celebrate their

birthday next week. Regards,

Gavan Welsh, Principal

CYBER SAFETY INFORMATION SESSION…. Robbie Noggler, Leading Senior Constable Youth Resource Officer, will be running a Parent Information Session on Wednesday June 10th from 7:00-8:30pm in the Multipurpose Room. Robbie will be discussing the cybersafety issues that we, as parents and carers, need to be aware of in order to keep our children safe in the online environment.

Robbie will also visit our 3,4,5 & 6 community to talk to about cyber safety. He will discuss cyber bullying, digital footprints, being safe online, bystanders, using social media sites, some safety tips, meta data and the importance of using devices near parents.

Attending this session is a good way to keep up to date with what our children are exposed to online. If you plan to attend, please register your name at the office so we can provide adequate seating.

We look forward to seeing you there! Cathy Burns

Stinton Avenue Walk Last week the Preps braved the weather and walked up to the Stinton Avenue shops to purchase food to make a healthy lunch. We had a great day getting out into our community as we learnt about money and being healthy. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to all the Mums and Dads who joined us on the walk and helped cut and prepare all our healthy food, and to the Stinton Avenue businesses for accommodating our excited Preps.

Do you have a Health Care Card? If you do then you should be applying for the Camps, Sport and Excursions Fund (CSEF). Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) The Victorian Government have unveiled a new $148 million initiative to ensure all Victorian students can take part in school trips and sporting activities. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) will run over four years and provide payments for eligible students to attend camps, sports and excursions. Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. $125 per year will be paid for eligible primary school students, with $225 per year paid for eligible secondary school students. Payments will go directly to the school and be tied to the student.

Criteria 1 – Eligibility. To be eligible for the fund, a parent or legal guardian of a student attending a registered Government or non-government Victorian primary or secondary school must: on the first day of Term two, or; on the first day of Term three; a) Be an eligible beneficiary within the meaning of the State Concessions Act 2004, that is, be the holder of a Veterans Affairs Gold Card or be an eligible Centrelink Health Care Card (HCC) or Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) holder, OR b) Be a temporary foster parent, and; c) Submit an application to the school by the due date – 26th June 2015.

Parents who receive a Carer Allowance on behalf of a child, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF unless they also comply with one of (a) or (b) above.

Criteria 2 - Be of school age and attend a Victorian school. School is compulsory for all Victorian children aged between six and 17 years of age. For the purposes of CSEF, students may be eligible for assistance if they attend a Victorian registered primary or secondary school. Typically, these students are aged between five and 18 years. CSEF is not payable to students attending pre-school, kindergarten, home schooled, or TAFE.

Applications for parents. Parents or legal guardians Parents or legal guardians are required to complete a CSEF application form and lodge it with their child’s school for processing.

Application forms should be completed and lodged with schools before the end of term two each year as payments are made each year during term three. However schools will be able to accept and process applications up until the end of term three each year.

Application forms are available from the school office. Please bring your Centrelink Health Care Card.

Shared custody. The CSEF system only allows one application per student. Parents in shared custody situations are encouraged to make decisions as to who applies for the CSEF.

How the CSEF will be paid. School administrators will enter the parent/legal guardian’s information from the application form. CSEF payments will be made directly to schools from the commencement of term three each year.
