LWR/CLC Baby Care Kits Project 2018 Goal-500 Kits Completed-150 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer

ATTENTION: Knitters- The project could use some knitters to knit sweaters. In the white basket in the gathering area, there is a sweater pattern that can be used. It is easy level and rather fast knitting without buttons or ties. The size should be for a child 6 months to 2 years of age. Yarn should be soft and not the bulky type. White yarn is not recommended as it will get soiled too quickly. If yarn is needed to knit, let me know as I have some yarn on hand. Our past knitters are no longer with us to fill this need.

Coupons can be used to purchase more for less money. Goodwill has a new system of reward points when purchases are made. Watch for their senior discount days and percentage off days. 75% off day is well worth the wait. Be sure buttons are attached and zippers work on any purchase made. No torn or stained items can be used.

Gently used flat flannel sheets(twin, double, queen, and king size) and pillow cases can be used. There is too much wasted material on the fitted sheets when they are cut for receiving blankets.

Watch Walmart for flannel fabric for $2.00 a yard. Also, watch for sales at Bethesda and other resale shops for special sales.

Yes, we do take Walmart gift cards in any amount. Gift cards will purchase items that need to be purchased such as 4 ounce bars of soap, dark colored hand towels, and flannel fabric.

Watch for bargains for the baby care kit project wherever you shop. It is amazing what can be found.

COMING SOON--TIME TO PLAN AHEAD Lent is rapidly approaching (Ash Wednesday is February 14) and with it comes our annual Baskets of Promise effort for the personal care kit project. As usual we will be collecting items for the LWR kits on each Sunday in Lent. Please prayerfully consider joining us in this important service project. We know that there are so many situations in the world right now where any kind of help is greatly needed. Beginning on February 18 we will collecting in the following order:

February 18--Soap, 4-5 ounce bars•February 25--Bath Towels, lightweight and dark color

March 4--Toothbrushes, adult size•March 11--Cash for Combs

March 18--Cash for Clippers•March 25--Your choice

Please note that we are asking for cash for combs and clippers because they can be purchased on line in bulk at a huge savings (Combs for about 25 cents each and clippers for about 40 cents). If you are willing to contribute, we can do the purchasing. This allows us to stretch our money and complete many more kits.

In the last 4 years we have provided 2700 personal care kits to Lutheran World Relief and we hope to continue that tradition this year. Your generosity can make this happen. Thank you so much for your support. Any questions or comments may be directed to Dave Keammerer at 219-462-8447 or [email protected].

CLC Social Ministry and Mission ~ February 2018

Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless. (Proverbs 31:8) Social Ministry Emphasis for February. Each month the Social Ministry highlights a special giving opportunity. The monthly emphases for February is Hilltop Neighborhood House. Hilltop Neighborhood House. February’s emphasis is to provide monetary and volunteer support for Hilltop house. Hilltop House is located “on a hill” in a neighborhood west of Valparaiso University where social service needs are real for the families and children living there. Hilltop is able to provide as a health care provider Medicare and Hoosier Healthwise benefits to those in Porter County living below the poverty level (estimated to be 9000 children and 4000 women in Porter County). A gift of $50 permits Hilltop to provide child care, health care, and community improvement activities within a child’s own family setting (also your contributions may qualify for Indiana’s Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit). On Tues. evening, Feb. 27, 4-7pm at Christ Lutheran, Hilltop will have its 19th annual “Heartwarming Soups” dinner – plan to attend if you can (CLC members & Youth will be involved in serving and cleanup for the dinner). Our congregational financial goal for February is $2000 (a combination of this month’s giving, a budgeted amount, and any Thrivent matching funds). Use your weekly worship service envelope and indicate “Hilltop” on the line marked Social Ministry with the amount you wish to give in addition to your regular giving. Thank you for your support of monthly social ministry needs.

A Message from Pastor Tim

The loft is ready – walls are drywalled and painted, drop-down stairs are installed, electrical is in. The HVAC vents have been moved and the light on the cross. The floor has been painted and wires have been strung. The front wall is cut out, waiting for windchests and blowers and pipes to move in, when it will all be screened in. Everything is ready.

This month we will welcome technicians and experts from Berghaus Organ Builders to begin installing our new-to-us organ. We expect trucks to start arriving the week of February 5 with our pipes and all the pieces and cabinets they have fashioned for us. It will be a fascinating process to watch, and will certainly mean hubbub and disruption for us – four weeks of installation and four weeks of “voicing,” making sure every pipe sounds its best, every rank and tone fills our worship space to its best ability.

We’ve been dreaming of this since at least the 1980’s, when already we knew we were outgrowing our first worship space. We’ve dreamt of it as we moved to the Activity Center, and we dreamt of it as we built our new addition. We’ve dreamt and dreamt and, when it seemed the Holy Spirit was engineering the opportunity, together we took a deep breath and a step in faith and said “yes.”

Easter Sunday, April 1, we will get to hear and experience that dream for the first time with the opening notes of our Entrance Hymn. Together we will discover what dreaming big for a fine instrument like this will do to and for us. Because that’s what this organ means – it is a tool, a means, a way for us to enhance and enrich the worship and praise we offer to God. It is not the goal, it is the means, the instrument to allow us to be shaped and formed bodily, to be shaped and formed in our praise and our worship to the glory of God.

Our organ is also a statement – it says that what we offer to God, the prayer and praise we offer together, is worth reaching for the very best. It says we’re in this for the long haul, as we fully expect this instrument to last at least 100 more years. It says we want to hold to who we are, the traditions that have shaped us, and let that ground us to reach beyond, to reach wider and farther than we’ve been able to reach. It says that music matters to us a lot, it changes us and shapes us and we dream of more.

As our pipes move in, as we meet the technicians who have been working on our instrument, as we witness with our own eyes what we’ve been dreaming of for 30+ years – as we retire our electronic organ this month, giving thanks to God for all the ways it has supported and shaped us – as we fast from organ-playing in anticipation of those first notes on Easter Sunday – as we bear witness and wait with growing excitement, I know you’ll join me in giving thanks to God for the faithfulness of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Louis who gifted this organ, and the generosity of our community that will shape and touch lives for generations. Join me in giving thanks to God, because he seems to have big, big plans for us, “Together growing in faith for the sake of the world”!

Peace,

-Pastor Tim

LWR/CLC Fabric Kit Project 2018 Goal-150 Kits Completed-12 Project Leader-Sandy Keammerer WHO-Individuals around the world who are in need of learning a marketable skill so they can help themselves, their families, and their communities. WHERE-Especially, Africa, and other extreme poverty pockets of need in the world. The search is on for our new Director of Music Ministries! Following months of visioning in the congregation and council, a search team is working hard to identify a person or team who will guide our musical life in ways that help us to fulfill our mission, “Together to grow in faith—through worship, formation, mission, and fellowship—for the sake of the world.” The musician(s) we seek will be able and excited to help all of us—children, youth, and adults, with many levels of ability and across a range of musical styles—to praise God with our voices and instruments. We are open to an individual candidate or to splitting this position between two musicians who would together cover the various aspects of this position. We are excited to begin a new chapter in our congregation’s worship life as we install our newly refurbished 31-rank Zimmer pipe organ and begin to enjoy the Baldwin grand piano recently gifted to the congregation by Karl and Paige Reichardt. We hope that the musician(s) in this position will find joy in playing these instruments, helping our members to share their own musical gifts, and working with our pastors to develop faithful and vibrant worship. The search team--Dorothy Bass, Wayne Coil, Lois Felten, Lisa Jennings, and Luke Venstrom--is currently spreading the word of this opening and welcomes ideas from members. The team will begin reviewing candidates during Lent.

National Wear Red Day® – Friday, February 2, 2018

Support Go Red For Women by participating in National Wear Red Day® on Friday, February 2, 2018 and donate to help fund research during American Heart Month.

Why Go Red? Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kill approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. That’s why this year we are asking that you wear red on National Wear Red Day® and Donate to Go Red For Woman. By doing so you help support educational programs to increase women’s awareness and critical research to discover scientific knowledge about cardiovascular health.

Go Red For Women is a movement that starts with you. Lead by example and make the time to “Know Your Numbers.” It’s knowledge that could save your life. Five numbers, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol, HDL (good) Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. It’s time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life — their hearts depend on it. We couldn’t make positive changes without the support and donations by individuals like you.

Christ Lutheran Church Youth Ministries

News from Clint Mullet

Quake is nearly here This year’s Quake is February 23rd – 25th! We’ll be heading to Schaumberg, IL for two

days of high energy activities and challenging lessons for our faith. Our speaker is Wes Halula and the Quake band is 100 White Flags! Total cost for the event will be $150.00! The registration deadline is January 29th, 2018! A deposit of $95.00 is due on registration. Permission slips and medical forms are due by February 22nd! All remaining trip fees are due on February 22nd as well! Questions or concerns? Contact Clint!

Movement Team – Assemble! The Movement Team will be a group of high school youth who will be regularly involved in creating, planning, and helping with youth ministry activities. We meet at every Sunday at 5:30PM! Circle nights, games, events, service projects! If you are an interested 9th-12th grader, talk with Clint for more information!

‘Superb Owl’ Party On Sunday, February 4th, we’re excited to announce our own kind of kick-off: regular youth events for middle school youth! To get things started, we’ll be having a combined event – middle school and high school – after 2nd service! We will eat pizza and play flag football in the Activities Center! Parents and younger siblings are welcome to join us! Please RSVP in the East Link! Cost is $5.00 per family or a side to share!

Middle School Calendar There is a strong desire from the Youth Board to have a middle school program in place. I’ve submitted a proposed calendar of Middle School events to the Youth Board for review. The calendar would begin in February and run through the school year. This calendar includes a variety of events to help foster community and relationships with our middle school youth. The middle school is being defined as the 6th – 8th grade teens in the church. This will be the precursor to a larger middle school program with a launch targeted for Fall 2018. Currently, my vision of middle school ministry in our church is a program that coordinates and promotes events, service projects, and activities for middle schoolers to grow in community and relationships. Pastor Tim, myself, and the youth board will work together this summer to determine how this new program will take shape around our Confirmation program.

Weather Reminders Our youth ministry follows the VCS decision-making on weather. If VCS is closed or cancels activities, we do the same. On weekends, Clint will make the decision. Ultimately, safety should come first when you dealing with adverse weather. If you don’t feel safe on the roads, stay home! Any cancellations will be sent out via mass text, our Facebook page, and e-mail.

Mission Statement & Educational Philosophy

Christian Mission Statement: Little Lamb Preschool, in union with Christ Lutheran Church, serves God by shepherding God’s children as we nurture the whole child in partnership with families.

Educational Philosophy Statement: We are a Christian preschool whose goal is to provide excellence in education and opportunities for faith formation in a loving, safe learning environment for every child. Based on evidence that shows young children learn best through play, we provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for them to explore, make discoveries, and learn respect for themselves and others. We firmly believe that all children are wonderful

gifts from God to be cherished and nurtured. In collaboration with families and Christ Lutheran Church, we encourage and support children to learn and grow socially, emotionally, academically, physically, and spiritually.
