The Feast of Christ the King 20 th November 2016 The Crown I was off work a couple of days last week with that nasty cold that’s been doing the rounds and spoiling the tail end of a long crisp autumn. So I watched all ten episodes of the recent Netflix series The Crown. It’s an American-British television drama series, created and written by Peter Morgan who is well-versed in the world of EIIR with his award-winning film The Queen and his play The Audience. For those of us of a certain age, this is a journey through our own family lifetime as we move from the abdication of Edward VIII, 80 years ago next month in 1936 (my parents married in 1934) up to the early years of the reign of Elizabeth II. There is a long hard look at the peculiar role of monarchy, both generally and in the specifically British context in which it has emerged during our lifetime. The religious, Christian and even mystical aspects are explored through the dialogue. There is a scene when the stammering King George VI is getting the 11- year-old princess Elizabeth to test him on his coronation vows. She plays the part of the Archbishop when they are interrupted by a courtier and he says to his daughter: “We haven't even reached the anointing. You have to anoint me, otherwise, I can't be King. Do you understand? [She shakes her head.] When the holy oil touches me, I am transformed. Brought into direct contact with the divine. Forever changed. Bound to God. It is the most important part of the entire ceremony. So we had better practise, hadn't we, archbishop?” [Elizabeth reads:] “Be thy hands, anointed, with holy oil. Be thy breast, anointed, with holy oil. Be thy head, anointed, with holy oil. As kings, priests and prophets were anointed." The Duke of Windsor is watching the coronation on TV in Paris with friends and he explains: “Oils and oaths. Orbs and sceptres. Symbol upon symbol. An unfathomable web of arcane mystery and liturgy, blurring so many lines no clergyman or historian or lawyer could ever untangle any of it. [An American friend says:] “It's crazy.” [The Duke continues:] “On the contrary. It's perfectly sane. Who wants transparency when you can have magic? Who wants prose when you can have poetry? Pull away the veil and what are you left with? An ordinary young woman of modest ability and little imagination. But wrap her up like this, anoint her with oil, and hey, presto, what do you have? A goddess.” The photographer Cecil Beaton has the last word in the final episode as he is psychologically preparing Elizabeth to pose for her famous coronation photo and referencing back to the first Queen Elizabeth: “All hail sage Lady, whom a grateful Isle hath blessed. Not moving, not breathing. Our very own goddess. Glorious Gloriana. Forgetting Elizabeth Windsor now. Now only Elizabeth Regina.” It’s all very figurative and ‘romantic’ but it reminds us of the power of imagery to inspire and draw us deeper into the mystery that is our life in Christ.
