THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to disci-pleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means follow-ing Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SVdP Food Pantry St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting non-perishable food at mass. It will be carried to the altar to be offered with our gifts, and then put away to be given to the needy. This is the beginning of a new program and at this point, all things are needed; but we would most appreciate peanut butter, tuna fish, cereal, rice and beans. Those in need of food will be able to come in to receive food on the 2nd and 4th Tue. and Thurs. afternoons start-ing in October. LLAMADOS A SER DISCÍPULOS La vocación central en el Evangelio según san Marcos es la vocación, o el llamado de ser discípulos. El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy nos brinda por lo menos un ejemplo de qué significa la vocación de ser discípulo y un ejemplo de lo que no significa. Una viuda pobre nos muestra que ser un buen discípulo significa seguir el camino de servi-cio de Jesús, incluso si implica entregar todo lo que tenemos para vivir (o incluso nuestra vida). Los letrados nos muestran con su mal ejemplo que ser un buen discípulo implica la vo-cación de hacer llegar el cuidado de Dios a los más necesita-dos. En nuestra lectura del libro de los Reyes otra viuda y su hijo corren peligro de morir. Ellos también entregan lo poco que tienen, pero son recompensados por Elías con comida suficiente para un año. Y la lectura de la carta a los hebreos nos recuerda que Jesús sacrificó su vida “para salvación de aquellos que lo aguardan” (Hebreos 9:28). Copyright © J. S. Paluch

San Vicente de Paul Dispena de Alimentos

San Vincente de Paul recogerá alimentos durante cada misa. Serán llevados al altar para ser ofrecido con nuestros dones, y luego guardado para ser entregado al nece-sitado. Este es el comienzo de un nuevo programa y en este punto, todo es necesario en especial: mantequilla de cacajuate, atún, los cereales, arroz y frijoles. Aquellos que necesiten comida podrán venir a recibir comida el segunda martes del mes y el cuar-to jueves del mes por las tardes comenzan-do en Octubre.

Các Biểu Tượng và Ý Nghĩa Thiêng Liêng của Mùa Vọng Chủ Nhật ngày 2 tháng 12 sắp tới đây là Chủ Nhật đầu tiên của Mùa Vọng, có rất nhiều biểu tượng mà chúng ta thường hay thấy trong Mùa Vọng, nhưng không hiểu rõ mấy về ý nghĩa thiêng liêng của chúng, bài viết ngắn này hy vọng sẽ giải tỏa được phần nào những thắc mắc đó.. .. Vòng Hoa Mùa Vọng (1) Vòng Hoa (Wreath) Kể từ thời xưa cổ, một vòng hoa là tượng trưng cho sự chiến thắng. Hình tròn của vòng hoa là nhắc nhở cho chúng ta biết về tình yêu thương bất tận của Thiên Chúa, dành cho chúng ta. (2) Màu Xanh của Vòng Hoa (The Green Color of the Wreath): Màu xanh lá cây chính là màu chỉ năm phụng vụ, vốn diễn tả về niềm hy vọng trong tình yêu thương bất diệt của Thiên Chúa dành cho chúng ta. Những cành của cây thông quanh năm suốt tháng đều có màu xanh lá cây. Những cành cây lúc nào cũng có màu xanh này cùng gộp lại với nhau để hình thành nên một vòng hoa là nhắc nhớ cho chúng ta biết rằng: Thiên Chúa và sự Mạc Khải của Ngài thì không bao giờ thay đổi, cũng giống như cây thông, lúc nào cũng xanh tươi vậy. (3) Các Ngọn Nến (The Candles): Ánh Sáng Chúa Kitô Có 4 cây nến được phân chia ra theo đúng khoảng thời gian của Mùa Vọng. Mỗi cây tượng trưng cho một trong "4,000 năm" mà Thánh Kinh được trao ban cho chúng ta kể từ khoảng thời gian mà Ông Adong qụy ngã vì tội lỗi cho đến khoảng thời gian sinh hạ ra Đấng Cứu Chuộc nhân loại. Cây nến màu tía (purple) đầu tiên được thắp sáng lên vào ngày Chủ Nhật Đầu Tiên của Mùa Vọng và trong suốt tuần lễ đầu tiên đó. Màu tía tượng trưng cho khoảng thời gian chuẩn bị, và ăn năn hối cải, cũng như tượng trưng cho sự vương giả. Cây nến màu tía thứ nhất và thứ hai đều được thắp sáng lên vào Chủ Nhật Thứ Hai của Mùa Vọng và trong suốt tuần lễ thứ hai đó. Khi cây nến thứ hai được thắp sáng lên, thì ánh sáng từ vòng hoa trở nên sáng sủa hơn (không còn mấy tối tăm nữa), cũng giống như sự hồi hộp và mong chờ ngày hạ sinh của Đấng Cứu Thế nơi tâm lòng chúng ta ngày càng gia tăng lên vậy. Vào Chủ Nhật Thứ Ba của Mùa Vọng, vốn được biết đến như là Chủ Nhật Gaudete (Gaudete Sunday), thì cây nến có màu giống như bông hồng được thắp sáng lên cùng với hai cây nến màu tía. Bông hồng tượng trưng cho sự mừng rỡ, sướng vui và niềm hân hoan sắp tràn dân của mọi người tín hữu. Đây là khoảng thời gian đặc biệt khi chúng ta hồ hỡi với niềm vui và sự rạo rực về việc Chúa Kitô sắp sửa đến với chúng ta trong hình hài của một Hài Nhi Bé Nhỏ. Và cây nến màu tía cuối cùng sẽ được thắp sáng lên trong ngày Chủ Nhật Thứ Tư của Mùa Vọng ám chỉ đến việc chúng ta mãi sốt sắng và kiên trì hơn rất nhiều trong việc chuẩn bị cả thể xác, tâm hồn lẫn con tim để đón nhận Thiên Chúa trong Mùa Giáng Sinh. Bà góa nghèo đã hy sinh tất cả (cả mạng sống mình) để theo chân Đức Giêsu. Các thầy ký lục là thí dụ xấu vì không mở lòng chăm sóc những người khốn khó. Trong bài đọc trích sách Các Vua, bà goá và con trai gần chết đói nhưng đã cho đi những gì ít ỏi họ có. Tiên tri Êlia đã thưởng công họ bằng cách cho họ đủ thức ăn trong năm. Một thí dụ khác về sự hy sinh, trong thư gửi tín hữu Do Thái, thánh Phao lô nhắc rằng Đức Giêsu đã hy sinh mạng sống mình để “đem ơn cứu rỗi đến cho những ai mong mỏi trông chờ Ngài” (Do Thái 9:28).
