A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them some-thing, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human un-derstanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult “public life” at his baptism by John. Today’s Gospel reading tells us of his “first sign,” providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and com-

passion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

KHO TÀNG TRUYỀN THỐNG Người Kitô giáo được khuyến khích cầu nguyện và hành động cho sự hợp nhất vào lúc này trong năm. Tuần này chúng ta không nên quá chú trọng đến sự chia rẽ trong thế giới Kitô giáo nhưng sự gắn kết trong đức tin và sứ mệnh. Mặc dù người Kitô giáo thường phân rẽ ra những thể hiện mới, gần đây, đã có những biểu hiệu hội tụ và đồng tình. Người Công giáo quan tâm hơn đến Lời Chúa, và các bạn Tin Lành chú trọng hơn đến bí tích Thánh Thể. Chúng ta được kêu gọi hãy để ý đến sự đa dạng trong truyền thống diễn đạt đức tin, và tôn quý những gì chúng ta có chung. Chúng ta không nên quá câu nệ, vì sự khác biệt đôi khi mang đến nhiều thú vị. Thí dụ khi nói “Chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện,” người Công giáo nhắm mắt, cúi đầu và chắp tay, người Tin Lành vỗ tay với người ngồi cạnh, người Chính Thống đứng lên và mở to mắt. Tại sao Hội thánh được gọi là Hôn thê của Ðức Kitô? Hội thánh được gọi là Hôn thê của Ðức Kitô bởi vì chính Chúa đã tự xưng là “Hôn phu” (Mc 2,19), Ðấng đã yêu thương Hội thánh, đã kết ước với Hội thánh bằng một Giao ước vĩnh cửu. Người đã phó nộp mình vì Hội thánh, để thanh tẩy Hội thánh bằng Máu của Người, để làm cho Hội thánh “trở nên thánh thiện” (Ep 5,26) và làm cho Hội thánh thành mẹ của tất cả các con cái của Thiên Chúa. Nếu hai chữ “Thân thể” cho thấy sự hợp nhất giữa “Ðầu” và các chi thể, thì hai chữ “Hôn thê” làm nổi bật sự phân biệt giữa đôi bên trong một quan hệ liên vị. Tại sao Hội thánh được gọi là Ðền thờ Chúa Thánh Thần? Bởi vì Chúa Thánh Thần ngự trong thân thể là Hội thánh, trong “Ðầu” và trong “các chi thể” của Hội thánh; hơn nữa, Ngài xây dựng Hội thánh trong đức mến, nhờ Lời Chúa, các Bí tích, các nhân đức và các đặc sủng. “Linh hồn tương quan với chi thể thế nào thì Chúa Thánh Thần cũng như thế đối với các chi thể của Ðức Kitô và thân thể Người là Hội thánh.” (Thánh Augustinô). Đặc sủng là gì? Đặc sủng là những ân huệ đặc biệt của Chúa Thánh Thần được ban tặng cho một số người vì lợi ích của con người, vì những nhu cầu của thế giới và đặc biệt là để xây dựng Hội thánh. THẤY ĐƯỢC CHÚA Thật khó diễn tả ý tưởng nếu không có chứng cứ. Giải thích về Thiên Chúa, Đấng vô hình, vượt ngoài hiểu biết của loài người, chúng ta gặp khó khăn tương tự. Ai cũng muốn thấy chứ không chỉ muốn nghe ý tưởng. Vì thế, Thiên Chúa ban cho chúng ta Đức Giêsu Kitô, Thiên Chúa hiện diện trong thế giới. Trong vài tuần qua, Đức Giêsu được tỏ hiện như một bé sơ sinh cho các mục đồng và các nhà thông thái, Ngài bắt đầu “cuộc sống công khai” khi được Gioan rửa tội. Phúc Âm hôm nay cho chúng ta dấu chỉ đầu tiên của Ngài, phép lạ hoá nước thành rượu cho tiệc cưới ở Cana. Đức Giêsu mặc dầu là Thiên Chúa mặc xác phàm nhưng không phải ai cũng hiểu được Ngài lúc còn tại thế cũng như bây giờ. Vì thế, chúng ta cần chiêm nghiệm những gì có thể thấy được: sinh trong cảnh nghèo hèn và đơn giản, khiêm nhượng và cởi mở với Gioan Tẩy Giả, lòng trắc ẩn và long nhân ái của Ngài dành cho những người gặp khó khăn bình thường như thiếu rượu trong tiệc cưới.
