From the Pastor’s Desk

This is the last week to sign up for the book study with our seminarian Ed Shikina. On Thursdays in July Ed will lead a discussion on “Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive.” This short book was put together by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Pontifical Council for the Family in preparation for the Pope’s visit to the United States for the World Meeting of Families in September. Participants in the book study will take a closer look at the Catholic Church’s understanding of family life. They will also learn how to engage more effectively in discussions about the definition of marriage. There will be a Nana Angarita concert taking place at Christ the King this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Nana is a Catholic singer from Colombia who has shared her talents all over the world. If you are interested, you can see a sampling of her work on You Tube. We are fortunate to host her at our parish, and I am sure her performance will both entertain and inspire. Thank you to those who were able to fill out the survey for the Catholic Foundation this weekend. Our diocese has been blessed by the work of the Catholic Foundation since its inception in 1985. Christ the King Church in particular has received a great deal of support from the foundation, for which we are tremendously grateful. If you were not able to fill out the survey, you can take do so online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/CatholicFoundation. Lastly, please note that there has been a change in our convent. One of our sisters, Sister Bianca, has traded places with Sister Laura, one of the sisters assigned to Saint Stephen the Martyr Church on the west side of Columbus. These two sisters have swapped assignments, at least for the time being. Sister Bianca has been working very hard at Christ the King and needs a respite. While she takes some time to recuperate at Saint Stephen the Martyr, Sister Laura will help out here at our parish. Please welcome Sister Laura and make her feel at home. And please offer a pray for Sister Bianca during her time away.

The Sisters’ Corner The Sisters wish all of our fathers a most blessed Father’s Day. Thank you for all that you do for your families and for the Church. Please welcome Sister Laura to our community. She comes to us from Saint Stephen the Martyr Church on the west side of Columbus where she has served for the past two years. She will be joining Sister Neri and Sister Jacqueline, while Sister Bianca takes time to rest at the convent at Saint Stephen the Martyr.

Parish News A Message from the Appalachian Project: This week youth volunteers and adult team members from our parish will be working in Scioto County to repair homes for disadvantaged families. Please pray for a safe, productive, and spiritually blessed week for all who volunteer and for all who are served. Thank you for your support. Over the past few years much of American society has embraced the idea of same-sex unions. Is there a way to respond to this cultural shift without being considered naive or intolerant? What exactly does the Catholic Church teach on this issue? And more importantly, why does the Church teach what she does? Come learn about the meaning, purpose, and value of marriage and famiy according to our Catholic faith. Our summer seminarian, Ed Shikina, will lead a five-week study on marriage and family that will meet on Thursdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The first metting will be on Thursday, July 9. The group will use a short book, “Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” which was writen specifically for the World Meeting of Families that will take place in Philadelphia in September with Pope Francis. The cost of the study will be $10 and refrehsments will be provided each evening. Each participant must sign up by calling the office by this Friday, June 26. (This event is in English.)

Internationally recognized singer Nana Angarita will present “There is a Time for Everything,” a Catholic concert of faith and hope. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. this Friday in the church. There is no cost but Nana will accept a freewill offering. (This event is in Spanish.) Thanks to everyone who gave blood last weekend during the Red Cross Blood Drive. Donors gave twenty-four pints of blood, saving seventy-two lives! The next blood drive will be on Sunday, August 23. Christ the King recently received funding from our endowments stewarded by the Catholic Foundation. We give thanks to God for the many generous parishioners who have worked with the Catholic Foundation in establishing these endowments. Registration for Parish School of Religion (PSR) and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) has begun. We ask that all first through eighth graders of the parish who do not attend a Catholic school participate in PSR.
