Para mucha gente, el título de “rey” tiene un sentido negativo. Muchos reyes de la historia han sido tiranos y corruptos, crueles y abusivos de su poder. En vez de buscar el bien común, se han aprovechado de su poder para su propio beneficio y para vivir lujosamente, mientras que sus súbdi-tos sufrían de hambre y miseria. Jesús se refirió a esta clase de reyes cuando dijo: “Como ustedes saben, los que se consideran

jefes de las naciones las gobier-nan como si fueran sus dueños, y los que tienen un puesto ha-cen sentir su poder.” (Mt 20:25) Para Jesús, reyes y autoridades deben ser siervos del pueblo, usan-do su poder para lograr la justicia, el bienestar, la paz y la felicidad de todos los miembros de la sociedad. Dijo Jesús: “Quien quiera ser el más importante entre ustedes, que se haga el servidor de to-dos; y quien quiera ser el pri-mero, que se haga siervo de to-dos.” (Mt 20:26-27) El Rey David se había aproxima-

do a este ideal de Cristo Rey. Rey David prefiguró ese ideal de Jesús. David estuvo llamado por Dios ser rey del pueblo de Dios unos nueve siglos an-tes de Cristo: “Tú eres el que ser pastor a mi pueblo; y llegarás a ser jefe de Israel.” (2 Samuel 5:2). David logró ser el modelo del

Instead of seeking the common good, they have abused their power for their own selfish interests, living in luxury while their subjects suffered hun-ger and misery. Jesus was referring to that type of king when he said, “You know that among the Gentiles their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their powerful ones make their authority felt. (Mt 20:25) For Jesus, kings and authorities, should be a servants of the people and using their power to bring about justice, and seek the wel-fare, peace and happiness of the people. “Whoever wishes to be-come great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be the servant of all”. (Mt 20:26-27. King David prefigured this ideal of Jesus. David was called by God to be king of God’s people some nine centuries before Christ. You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be chief over Israel” (2 Sam 5:2) David became the model of the Good Shep-herd. In spite of his personal sins, David was a

Buen Pastor. A pesar de sus pecados personales, David era un buen rey, sirviendo a la gente con com-pasión. Era un “mesías” o, salvador de su pueblo y uno quién prefiguró a Cristo Rey. Dios le prometió que su linaje real, nunca tendría fin. La promesa de Dios a David se cumplió en Jesús, descendiente del rey David. En la anunciación, el án-gel dijo a María: “Vas a quedar embarazada y da-rás a luz un hijo, y le darás el nombre de Jesús. Será grande, y con razón lo llamarán Hijo del Altísimo. Dios le dará el trono de David, su an-tepasado. Gobernará por siempre al pueblo de Jacob y su reinado no terminará jamás.” (Lucas 1:31-33)

Como David fue escogido por Dios para unir a su pueblo y promover la justicia y la paz, así Jesús fue enviado por Dios para unir a todos los pueblos y toda gente en un solo reino, el Reino de Dios; y promover

la justicia y la paz en todo el mun-do. Después de dedicar su vida a la predicación del amor, la justicia y la paz, Jesús, estuvo coronado rey, pero con una corona de espinas. Murió en la cruz bajo el letrero que decía: “Éste es el Rey”. (Juan 19:19) Jesús dio su vida para poner fin al odio y la violencia, la codicia y el egoísmo, a todo lo que divide a los pueblos y las naciones. Hoy debemos preguntarnos si nuestros gobernantes siguen el ejemplo y la enseñanza de Jesús, gobernando y legislando a beneficio del buen común. ¿Representan a la mayoría del pueblo, preocupándose especialmente por los más débiles, vulnerables y necesitados de la so-

ciedad? El reinado de Cristo Rey es material e histórico. La Palabra eterna estaba presente con el Padre y Espíri-tu Santo en la creación del universo. Cristo es el Rey del Universo y ama lo que ha creado y ahora gobier-na desde el Cielo. Las autoridades y sus ciudadanos deben preservarlo y realizarlo. En nuestro bautismo fuimos incorporados en el Cuerpo de Cristo; fuimos ungidos con el santo Cris-ma, que significa que somos participantes en la dig-nidad y la misión de Cristo Rey. Nuestra llamada es luchar para hacer nuestro mundo un: “reinado de verdad y vida, un reinado de santidad y gracia, un reinado de justicia, amor, y paz” (del prefacio eucarístico, Fiesta de Cristo Rey)

good king, and served the people justly and com-passionately. For this, God promised that his royal lineage would never end. God’s promise was fulfilled in Jesus, a descend-ant of David. At the annunciation, the Angel said to Mary: “You will conceive and bear a son, and name him Jesus. He will be great, and be called Son of the Most High. God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end. (Luke 1:31-33) As David was chosen by God to unite God’s peo-ple and promote justice and peace, so also was Je-sus sent by the Father to unite all peoples and all persons into one kingdom—the Kingdom of God; and to proclaim justice, peace and love in the world. For this, Jesus was crowned, but with a crown of thorns. He died on the cross under a sign which read: “This is the king”. (John 19:19) He gave his life to end hatred and violence, greed and selfishness, and whatever else divides people and nations. Today, we ask ourselves if our civil authorities and legislators are following the example and teaching of Jesus, governing and making laws to benefit the com-mon good. Do they represent the majority of the people and care especially for the weakest, most vulnerable and neediest members of society? Christ the King’s kingdom is material and historical. God’s eternal Word was present with the Father and the Holy Spirit at the creation of the universe. Jesus, Christ the King, loves the universe, which he helped to create. He expects earthly authorities and their fellow citizens to preserve and enhance it. Our leaders need to do all they can to protect this world and its environ-ment; and to promote peace among nations and equality among all people. In Baptism, we were incorporated into the Body of Christ. We were anointed with the holy chrism, a sign that we share in the dignity and mission of Christ our King. Our call is to strive to make our world: ”a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace”. (from the Preface for the Feast of Christ the King)

Medita on: Solemnity of Christ the King

CHRIST IS KING

On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predic ons that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends me and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revela on give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of crea on. No ma er what na-

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catho-lic roots, the old liturgical calendar s ll had an uncon-scious claim on their hearts. We’ve already seen how on Saint Mar n’s Day, November 11, medieval con nental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a fes ve dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of “Saint Mar n’s Wine,” the first wine of the new harvest. Mar nmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even a er the Reforma on, the tradi on of ea ng goose on Saint Mar n’s Day was retained in Hol-land, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradi on. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachuse s wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

En 1917 México recibió una nueva Cons tución en la cual se estableció una polí ca de intolerancia religiosa, especialmente en contra de la Iglesia católica romana. Con el pasar de los años las normas an clericales fueron puestas en vigor hasta el punto que algunos mexicanos piadosos y cris anos decidieron defender su religión.

En marzo de 1925, estos mexicanos católicos funda-ron la Liga Nacional para la Defensa de la Libertad Reli-giosa, en el mismo mes en que el papa Pío XI proclamó la Fiesta de Cristo Rey, celebrada el úl mo domingo del año litúrgico. Inspirados por el grito de “¡Viva Cristo Rey!”, los fieles se convir eron en Cristeros, muchos de los cuales dieron su vida por Cristo, demostrando así que Jesús es verdaderamente el Rey de sus vidas.

La Cris ada duró sólo tres años en México y muchos sacerdotes, religiosas, religiosos, laicas y laicos dieron su vida para la gloria de Cristo Rey en México. CRISTO ES REY

El úl mo domingo del año litúrgico celebramos la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Puede que entendamos las lecturas de hoy como acontecimientos que sucedieron hace mu-cho, mucho empo o predicciones que se harán reali-dad algún día en algún lugar. Pero en realidad nos invi-tan a aclamar a Cristo como nuestro Rey aquí y ahora. Las palabras de Jesús a Pilatos en el Evangelio nos re-cuerdan que su Reino trasciende el empo y el espacio. Y las profecías de Daniel y del Apocalipsis nos dan mo -vos para ser fieles a Cristo, nuestro Rey, aquí y ahora. Al terminar el año con esta fiesta proclamamos nues-tra fe en que Jesucristo es el único Rey de todos los
